Oh yeah you missed something by getting the Meryl ending in 1. If you give into the torture and Meryl "dies", Campbell confesses to Snake that he's actually her father. He cheated with his brother's wife and she never knew about it. So he told her that after 1.

So the Otacon ending is canon?

Snake & Otacon use the Mk II as a video screen sometimes, but a lot of the codecs you see aren't actually visual, it's just there for the player. Just like in previous games they weren't actually seeing each other while they were talking.

BTW dude, you might wanna check out Portable Ops. It doesn't really make a big impact on the rest of the games, but it does have one or two things that come back up in 4. Then after 4, if you want any more MGS you can't skip Peace Walker and go straight to V. Peace Walker's basically the 5th main game honestly.

Plus PO's not a very long watch.

Might do that. I don't plan on buying any more consoles for Metal Gear, so it looks like I'm in for a long watch session.

IIRC, Naomi changed the virus to trigger randomly. It could have activated while he was walking away from Shadow Moses, it could have hit him on the Big Shell, or Snake could die of old age before it ever triggers.

Well yeah, but the other 3 people who died of FOXDIE all did within hours of coming into contact with it. Seems very unlikely Snake would get this lucky.

For a bit of clarity, I believe between 2 and 3 the truth about Operation Snake Eater and a lot of the stuff regarding the Boss and Big Boss became more public knowledge somehow. I don't think it was out there for everyone, but I'm pretty sure that Snake and Otacon found out about it, so Snake's view on his dear old daddy changed a bit.

Even locked in the cell in MGS1 Snake said his only friends were Grey Fox and Campbell which surprised the Colonel. Campbell did him dirty, but kinda came around to his side at the end and was sort of being forced into a lot of it same as Snake. The Secretary of Defense, Jim Houseman was the real dick behind forcing Snake and Campbell to do it. Also Roy didn't know about FOXDIE either iirc. So yeah dick move, but Snake's letting it slide.

It's a little reductionist to ignore the context of that spending. U.S. foreign policy since WW2 has always been forward deployment to keep conflict off our soil.

We subsidize the defense of all of our allies, and with that came a lot of geopolitical leverage in terms of a world order. The middle east aside, there hasn't been large-scale conventional warfare between super powers since. And that's because of a global presence.

Also, the costs are reflective of the fact that we can't exactly outsource a military. We're paying U.S. prices, if that makes sense. Can't exactly buy tech and arms from China or Russia. Can't sell yours either unless you want it reverse engineered.

I don't agree with the practice in its entirety because there definitely are players who stand to benefit from that status quo, but it's easy to criticize in a time of relative peace.

If we didn't spend that money at this point in time, it would leave a massive power vacuum and that seems a little scary and unstable, tbh.

Present it however you want, imperialism is still imperislizm.

Just a gentle reminder that military spending created plastics, GPS, the internet, nuclear power, and a significant number of additional quality of life improvements. It's not just bombing brown people.

And the Holocaust (more specifically Josef Mengele) gave us tons of data on what exact conditions will be enough to kill a person given certain parameters, allowing us to make precautions to avoid unintentional death that we wouldn't otherwise have. Doesn't mean it was a positive thing.

That being said, I don't get people who call it a terrible game. It (and by "it", I mean OOT 3D) is still pretty fun to play, even today. I had a pretty good mental map of the game world by the end, and its world building is still really nice. Combat may be dry and full of unnecessary waiting, but I can still appreciate it for what it is and what it did.

Oh, and I might as well give my ranking of what I've played so far. 3 > 2 > 1, both in terms of gameplay and story. 2 definitely has its moments that surpass 3's average, and I am a fan of not getting spotted by guards that are 30 feet away from me, but 3 has better bosses and more interesting scenarios overall than 2. If the quality of the tanker continued throughout the rest of the game, 2 would definitely be my favorite in terms of gameplay. Having played 2, I think I have a much better grasp on 3's mechanics, so I might do another playthrough of it armed with better mechanical knowledge.

It was suggested earlier that I just watch the cutscenes of 4 instead of buying a PS3 and the game itself. Is that still a good idea? Also, should I seek out a copy of Twin Snakes?
