There's an anonymous person who posts on 4chan (8chan??) who goes by Q and posts cryptic messages that a lot of brain-damaged alt-righters try to interpret as meaning all sorts of things. They think that Biden is actually dead and the guy you're seeing is fake, that Trump is still the president and ANY MINUTE NOW will activate some sort of Order 86 with the military to take back the White House, etc.

I wish they'd do it at every show. I'm tired of going to rock shows and having to a) watch through an ocean of phones and/or b) have everyone around me tweeting/texting/whatever between songs

Side story:

I teach in a university theatre program. In my first year, we produced a play (that was not a comedy), in which one white character told another white character a racist joke. The joke did not contain any slurs, but it was clearly making fun of black people. It was not played for a laugh. The playwright's intention was to show that the person telling the joke was an asshole.

That context did not matter to several black students who saw the show and were upset by the joke. It turned into a small shit storm, and we received many angry emails and phone calls about the show.

tl;dr "It's okay that they're saying racist stuff because them being racist is the point!" doesn't hold up with the people who are being joked about

They are happening at way more than 4 schools. You just don't hear about them because most have no violent incidents occurring in them. I looked up my old college and there are protests there but nothing on the national news because nothing "interesting" is happening there.

The point was that the vast VAST majority of these protests are NOT UCLA/Columbia

I'm not sure you're following so let me help you: every character in that show is an absolutely awful person, that is the entire bit. The joke isn't the stuff they say, they are the joke. It's a joke that they think and do that stuff.

This is the the same way that Tropic Thunder's blackface worked. The joke was that that character was an unbelievable racist.

I am following. There are several shows like this (Arrested Development, for example, which is amazing).

I'm not "offended" by the show. If I was, I would've stopped watching after the first episode.

One can enjoy a show and still recognize a few "ehhhhh" moments in it.

What's REALLY funny is the number of people in this thread tripping over each other to hand wave those moments

Its also great if you are digging S1. I rewatched it about a month or so ago, and its definitely a bit rough since they were still finding their groove and no Frank yet, but its still good.

Them all being awful is super clear (and hilarious). It's just very 2005 in its humor in the first season.

I'm fine with it being edgy (in fact, I applaud it), but in the first four episodes alone, we have Charlie dropping the n-word, the use of gay slurs, and an entire episode making trans jokes

...some big yikes. Yes, a lot of it is very funny, but holy shit, there is A LOT of cringey stuff that would NEVER go over in 2024.
