E2-5 gets a wide range of scores. Some really liked the mastermind, some didn't, and some did but also felt the plan didn't really make that much sense. Mostly everyone agreed that the case has a lot of bloat. Interestingly, because of just how much it does, a few felt that it really lacked identity and was hard to remember anything about it.

Summary:

When a bomb goes off in the courthouse, Apollo is injured and it's up to the firm's newest lawyer, Athena Cykes, to step up and handle the case.

Main Characters: Athena Cykes, Apollo Justice, Phoenix Wright, Gaspen Payne, The Judge
Other Characters: Juniper Woods, Candice Arme, Ted Tonate

My rating: 2/10. I feel this case takes all the wrong lessons from starting in media res. When you have the full context of this case, this case seems really...strange. Why is Athena freaking out against Gaspen Payne of all people after doing a much more anxious case? Why is Juniper nothing like her 5-3 appearance? Is Apollo that much of a factor? And it's just kind of weird this all happens in the middle of 5-4 and 5-5. Outside of that, it's...a tutorial case. I would have liked for Athena to take this on, but I get why they brought Phoenix for it. Payne is fine, Tonate is fine, everything is just fine. The bluff at the end is nice, but...honestly, I never really "got" this case, like the logic behind figuring out it was a fake bomb.

From what I've seen these past few days... You have absolutely no redeeming qualities. Perhaps you should try starting over again... as a human being.

Sharks should definitely be in the bottom of Tier 4, not Tier 5! Not sure what happened there.

I feel monkeys and spiders are both really divisive. I know a ton of animal lovers that just hate monkeys. Arachnophobia is huge, but a lot of people find spiders fascinating. I think they're still on the bottom tier, but they're above all the unranked stuff like mosquitos and bedbugs. Generalized Bug, I think of as like...ants, beetles, etc.

Raccoons are tough. I agree that they're probably higher in fiction, but they also kind of are an unliked animal, even in fiction.

I consider pandas/bears and ducks/geese/penguins to be the same. Maybe shift a bit in the tier, but definitely the same tier.

I've been watching the Nintendo Indie trailer today and noticed a few games starring frogs. That combined with the Bubbulfrogs in TOTK and the amount of work put into the Toad status in the FF7 remakes make me think that frogs have jumped a tier in popularity, which is something I put a fair amount of thought into. I figured I would post it and see what you all think.

If I posted a funny meme of this animal or if I had to anthropomorphize an animal for something I'm creating, which ones are more likely to get positive reception? Before I can rate this, can anyone remind me why Simon does any of the shit he's responsible for besides getting Knightley killed? Was E2-3 just him being mad at his dad? Past that I have no idea.

A lot of it has to do with Simon being the witness to the assassination of Huang and the evil Yatagarasu knowing about this and trying to silence him.

Cenobites are definitely the big pull of Hellraiser, which is wild that they show up for like 10 minutes. I was really hoping for them to be more involved in the ending too. Them being a final boss after Frank's departure is underwhelming.

E2-4 ties with E2-2. Mostly everyone liked the Courtney face turn. However, the amnesia plot had a lot of mixed opinions. Some thought it led to really strong Edgeworth/Kay dynamics, culminating in Edgeworth choosing his relationships over his badge. Others felt it wasn't used very well and is a weak plot line.

While I've been using the Prosecutor's Path names and translation, I went through AAI2 through the dowolf translation, which I really liked. The name in that translation, Turnabout Oblivion, feels a lot more apt than The Forgotten Turnabout. And Blaise being named Oswald leads to some nice lines with his nickname being Ozzie.

Summary:

No more than a few hours after their last close call, Edgeworth and Kay stumble onto a new, high profile murder investigation. And a kidnapping. And another kidnapping? And another murder? Edgeworth goes all out to solve this final case, relearning what being a prosecutor really means to him all over again.

My rating: 9/10. The Grand Turnabout, indeed. This is a highly ambitious case and it meets those ambitions...at the beginning and the end of the case. The middle, though, can really drag. There's a BUNCH crammed in this case, mostly by design. I'll tackle the big threads.

Debeste's face turn and the trials: Great and terrible. Everything to do with Sebastian Debeste is really fun and he earns his face turn here. I...think it might have been better to put this in E2-4 simply because this case is too bloated, but it also helps to see Sebastian by Blaise's side in E2-4 and decisively turn on him here. The trials, on the other hand, are simply terrible. As Anagram mentioned last topic, Shields is just blatantly not following his duties and it just feels...really wrong. The pacing is brutal too. I do appreciate that Blaise continues to be deeply incompetent, though.

The murder and the evil Yatagarasu: Huang is a really interesting victim, made even more interesting when you learn that it's the body double. Patricia, Blaise, and the Body Double is a pretty neat group of victims, but...it's pretty weird that they're all complete jobbers. Patricia's sympathy in E2-2 pretty much goes out the door when you realize she's a monster. I really like the Moozilla stomp murder scene and how it actually turned out to be a Goomba stomp kill. I always appreciate a theatrical murder scene.

The mastermind: I think this will really color how much you love this case. Keyes is probably my favorite game-long villain and the game does a great job of making him a monster, but also showing how much of this was outside the bound of his control. Keyes himself obviously has a ton of really fun animations and figuring out who exactly the mastermind is is really fun, especially since this case brings literally the entire cast out. I don't really like Dogen being Keyes' parental substitute. I think that's fine...but why does it need to be an assassin? de Killer and Dogen walking out of a tent surrounded by law enforcement is also pretty bad, a clear visual indication of how untouchable assassins are in Ace Attorney.

The emotional highlights: Generally, the Ace Attorney games have throughlines in them overarching the game. AAI2 has both a throughline regarding the mastermind, but also a throughline regarding fatherhood. I really enjoyed this part of AAI2 and it really culminates in this case in regards to Keyes. I just want to mention how much I love that aspect of AAI2. Oh, and Gumshoe getting a raise in his final appearance so far in the series feels...appropriate.

I feel like the original idea for this was going to be more "transportative," like you'd be in a VR version of Junon, and they'd give your party black suits to wear (how cool would "Turk" inspired alt costumes be?). And you'd skulk around a VR version of Junon to take out a terrorist leader. But instead they're just battles in the regular Chadley VR space.

This is exactly what I expected too. Easily the most disappointing quest in the game.

The real rewards here are some decent lore and quest progression.

I agree, the lifespring and the summon world intel are fun just for the lore. I remember getting to an Odin summoning area without hearing Chadley speak about the lore and I was frantically looking around for a summon crystal to break.

UPA sidequest is great until you do the battle square. Holy shit.

For UBs, I typically have a pretty high opinion of them. Not Stakataka, though. That one seems uninspired.

For Paradox, the future ones are mostly bad but the past ones are mostly good. At the very least, the names are great. Scream Tail.

E2-3 earns its place in the top 5. Many appreciated how it adds to the overall universe of Ace Attorney. The case taking place in the past and present was also praised by several. It, just like many other AAI2 cases, is thought of as too long.

Summary:

You can't have a teenaged side-kick for too long before they end up a murder suspect; Edgeworth learns this lesson the hard way, putting his entire career on the line to defend Kay not from the mysterious figure that attacked her, but the Prosecutorial Investigations Committee that is determined to have the both of them locked away.

My rating: 3/10. I love the characterization here. I mentioned before that Kay eventually pays off and this is the case I'm thinking of. ...Of course, it's the case where Kay doesn't act like Kay at all. But I really enjoy Edgeworth and Kay's relationship in this chapter. Courtney's heel-face turn is nice, too. And Karin/Bonnie's role is pretty good. I like the twist of an unreliable autopsy on top of an unreliable narrator. But I don't really like anything else about this case, though. I find the murder pretty uninteresting and I feel like it relies a bit too heavily on fanservice to lift up what's there. I like Blaise, but he's such a massive jobber. And the pacing is slow. E2-2 is worse, but at least it has reason to be long. E2-4 does not, really.

I was pretty mentally checked out on any result after Link/Shepard/Draven. Like I didn't even bat an eye at Vivi > Mario or Squirtle > Dante.

I tend to group the Case 3s into two categories: "filler case regarding a quirky topic" and "long case that builds up to finale". 6-3 falls into the second one, but I wouldn't necessarily call it epic. That said, this case and another game's Case 3 fall into that second one and I would call them epic cases.

Many considered this the weakest AAI2 case...and it still gets above a 5.0! The pacing is the huge killer here, with mostly everyone citing this to be the issue. Some of the characters were not entirely compelling either. On the other hand, mostly everyone liked the prison setting and the general conceit of the case.

Summary:

Eighteen years ago, Gregory Edgeworth took a case that would become the final case of his career. At the request of his father's former colleague and friend, Edgeworth rises to the challenge of solving the mystery that marred Manfred von Karma's perfect record, and cost his father his life.

My rating: 9.5/10. This is a contender for most epic and dramatic non-finale case in the entire series. Shields was fine in E2-2 but he really earned his mark here as Gregory's assistant. Playing as Gregory rules and I love the film noir design they gave him. Having one of the most influential background cases become reality and having it take place in a national dessert contest is wild and I feel like only Ace Attorney has the chutzpah to pull off. A case that switches between the past and the present is already a really cool idea and the pacing, while rough at times, feels decidedly earned. The cast is top notch too: Jeffrey and Katherine are both really compelling and sympathetic characters, Larry is a little less in the forefront which works for him, Gustavia's a giant question mark until he reveals himself to be an asshole, and Delicia is the rare quirky Ace Attorney witness that just works.
