This is probably going to be my most controversial review, because I really didn't enjoy Logan as much as most people.

Bear with me here though because I feel like it holds some water. This movie was marketed as a serious movie about Hugh Jackman's final performance as Wolverine, but I feel like that was more of a side plot than the focus. The plot is filled with all the typical X-Men shit that you come to expect from the franchise, instead of a serious departure that the franchise needed. Like the entire quest for Eden and the evil organization were such pointless plotlines that took up majority of the film. I didn't care about it at all. I just wanted to see more of Logan and how he lives in a world where mutants are gone.

So while I'm naturally very frustrated at this movie I can't say it's awful, because I still do enjoy the X-Men movies as a whole. I just wanted a little preface about what I think the movie should of been. I'm still going to look at this objectively.

First of all Hugh Jackman puts in a great performance and is incredibly worthy of being his last. Hands down best part of the movie. Now for my first major issue, the R rating. Just because a movie is rated R doesn't mean you have to use the word fuck whenever you get a chance. What makes cussing in general different from other words is the character or person using them and why. Do I fully expect Wolverine cussing like a sailor? Yes. Should Prof. X be casually dropping F bombs just because it's rated R? No it's completely out of character, he's a character that's always been calm and collected and would never cuss. It takes you out of the movie and it's only there to remind you the movie is rated R. While I'm discussing the professor I think it's worth noting that I also don't like how he's become some sort of comic relief? Like I think it's weird that you're supposed to get laughs out of his lines one moment and the next is very sad. I get he's grown senile, but it could've been handled a lot better in a more serious tone.

Early I also mentioned I didn't like the plot very much. So I feel like I need to elaborate, it just feels very tacked on. It's almost like they had this idea for a third Wolverine movie that ties into the X-Men universe. Then they also wanted to make the serious Logan film and just wound up combining the ideas. As a result it feels very messy it's like they're trying to end one saga, while starting up a new one with the kids. Like I wouldn't be surprised if we got an X-23 solo flick after this, despite that though I do think they handled X-23 in a pretty good way. I can't say the same for the villains however, these guys are so pointless it's not even funny. We've seen so many evil organizations against mutantkind it's ridiculous. Their whole point in the movie is just so the movie can have a villain. Which it didn't need in the first place. Even the idea of CG enhanced Hugh Jackman to make him look younger has been so overused in film at this point it doesn't have that kick it needed to make X-24 interesting.

Overall I think Hugh Jackman came in a got what he wanted out of the role as well as giving the audience what they wanted. Which is fantastic and it really cements him as the face of Wolverine. It's a shame the rest of the movie wasn't on the same level.

Agreed on this part; I'll also add that Jordan Peele had a different ending planned if you didn't read about it already. Peele changed it to ending on a good note after the increase of high-profile shootings of black people by law enforcement.

Supposedly, the original ending was an actual cop (not Rod, the TSA guy) shows up to the scene of the crime and arrests Chris for the murders of the entire Armitage family. Rod shows up to Chris' jail cell looking for information and Chris tells him everything's fine..

Another alternative ending was Rod makes it to the Armitage house and finds Chris. Chris responds that he doesn't know who Rod is talking about, thus suggesting that the brain transplant was a success.

I did actually read about the first ending and while I think it would've definitely made it a much more powerful film. It would've made the movie more depressing like I probably would've walked away feeling gross.

5. Get Out

This entire review will be marked in spoilers, because the absolute best way to watch this movie is doing it blind and I will also be casually talking about spoilers. You have been warned.

So the best thing about this movie is the atmosphere and cinematography. Not only was it surprising to see this come from Peele, but it's perfect for a horror film. The entire movie is just flatout unnerving, which is even further helped by the performances. Good god is there some really good acting in this film, my favorite is probably the girlfriend. I love that in the first half of the movie, she's absolutely adorable and perfect for Chris, but then post heel turn she's super creepy and stone cold. It's great because the entire movie you're so unsure if she's actually with her family or not. I think the rest of the performances are great too. Chris is a great lead that is really relatable, I was worried that the themes of racism would lead to a disconnect for me, but it's handled in a really interesting way. The whole movie Chris is dealing with different acts of racism to varying degrees, but he's still polite and respectful in return. You never see Chris get aggressive or angry, but rather frustrated, scared and confused. As a whole it makes the issue of racism a lot more understandable to dumb white people like myself. Now all of this you would think makes this movie perfect right? Well not exactly.

As unique and smart as the movie is. I think it has some really bad pacing issues, as well problems with the story. First off the best part story wise is Chris meeting the family, as I said it's really unnerving and you don't know what their true intentions are if they even have any, but the mystery is over pretty quickly. As soon as the Mom hypnotizes Chris it's over, you know they're planning something evil. Then when you meet the neighbors and friends all mystery is done and over with. The subtle and accidental racism we saw with the parents are gone. These people are just flatout racist and it kind of ruins all build up they had going on. At least the parents tried to hide it and the dad especially came off as likable initially. So instead of their heel turn having the same effect of the girlfriend, it comes off as uneventful and unsurprising because you already know Chris is in the trap. What makes this even worse is the trailers pretty flat out spoil the whole movie and good lord were the trailers unavoidable. It's such a shame too, because the first half was sooo good. Now I will say though the ending bit with the grandparents and the cop/tsa fake out were fantastic and ended the movie on a good note. I just wish the climax had more to it.

It's a really good film that had a ton of potential, but really dropped the ball near the end, so while it comes really close to being perfect think the flaws really weigh it down. So sadly I have to give it a...
