Congratulations are in order!

That's a great place to be spending a lot of time at. Circular Quay is a a really cool area. A stones throw away from The Rocks which is the historic part of Sydney.

The Opera House itself is also really great.

You'll have a great time.
Good to know! Ill be there at least a week for my audition and if I win, will live there full time

I enjoy it. It's expensive as you said but it's a pretty good city.

128k is considered a pretty good wage here. You'll be fine. Biggest thing will be finding a place to stay. Once you have that you're all sorted.

Pretty cool experience for you to have! Will you be playing at the Opera House?
Yep! All of Sydney Symphonys concerts are at the Opera House

I just found out I advanced to the finals for a spot in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, so there is a non-zero chance of me moving there at this point.

side note, for any australian cemen: the salary is $128k; what is this salary like in Sydney? I know its an expensive city

Tc how much has your earning potential increased by over your baccalaureate?
Well, my odds of getting a salaried orchestra position are much, much higher than they were when I finished my bachelors. Dont know how to turn that into a number

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Mine was performance based, so the equivalent is my Masters solo recital, where I had to make my own program that met certain requirements and give a performance that the school deems is good enough to pass

Thanks everyone! Im a double bassist. Im not sure how they do subs; sometimes the sub takes the chair of the member who is out, and sometimes the present members just move forward and the subs are in the back stands.

The next step is to keep taking job auditions and go for a permanent spot in an orchestra. The major ones like San Diego offer salary, medical/retirement benefits, etc, and those are the ones Im going after.

Ive played with plenty of smaller, regional, part-time orchestras, but the SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY is the first big boy, top-level

I auditioned for them back in February, made it close to the end but didnt win the spot. The person who did win the spot didnt take it though, and now theyre offering me 2 weeks to play with them. Would be great if it turns into more!

also making $4k in 2 weeks for basically 40 hours of work aint too bad either

I lost my grandma to failed kidneys a couple years back. I was 21 and it was the first major death in my family/friend circle that I had experienced. She lived in our house my whole life and was essentially another parent. I can sympathize with your situation.

Its extremely hard, but try to remember as the moments get harder that the fact that you feel so much grief and that so much family is visiting her is a testament to the importance she had to you and them. The body may be going, but what she had to offer lives on in you and others who she had a profound impact on. Thats what got me through - everyone has to die at some point, but the fact that we all left the hospital all remembering the ways in which she had impacted us is what stopped it from being a true tragedy. I think theres nothing more you could hope for than going out of this world leaving pieces of you behind, and it sounds like thats what she did.

My heart is with you, TC.
