Mass Effect had a very rudimentary one, and it worked. Getting your squad mates to get better angles on baddies was a very sound tactic. Not sure how it would work in an on-rail space shooter, though.

Final Fantasy 7 was transcendent for what it introduced to the genre relative to other games at the time. That's why it's so fondly remembered. My first jrpg was Final Fantasy 4, which is why it sits in my top 3 SNES RPGs.
