Because heterosexuality is the "default" assumption, the only way to make a character LGBT is to prove it through words or actions or strongly imply it with stereotypes. The former brings out the usual suspects saying that it was unnecessary and added nothing to the story, neglecting that prior to that point, they assumed they were straight.
