It's pretty clear that she tells her daughter you have to hit her for that. What 'that' is, I don't know. I don't know what the mom thinks she saw."

The smaller girl did undercut her. Meaning when the other girl jumped up to shoot, she walked in to her landing area so that the the shooter would land on her foot. This is a penalty, and at higher levels of basketball its considered a dirty play, because it can lead to injuries. Look up Kawaii Leonards injury against the warriors a few years ago.

Im not saying that the girl that was punched did it intentionally, or tried to injure her, shes probably just an uncoordinated high school kid that accidentally got to too close. I do think that the mother doesnt think understand this nuanced difference.

At least they did one quality of life thing where the game autosaved your password for you, so you wouldn't have to write it down for input next time. I farmed metroids to get the health and missiles I needed, and I still almost died in Mother Brian's room because those rings are a nightmare.

The secret to the rings is that there can only be 3 on the screen at a time. So if you freeze them instead of destroying them, no more can spawn. You get a few seconds before they unfreeze, and you can refreeze them if you time it right.

The hardest part when you are new is destroying the walls, and killing mother brain in 1 go. You dont actually have to do this, since those walls being destroyed gets saved in the password just like any other door. The trick is to not use the platforms with all the guns aiming at them, its a setup. Go right up to the poll, aim straight up, and freeze one of the rings when its in the right position. You can use that as a platform to destroy the wall. Once all of those are gone, if your health is low, just suicide, or up+a go back and collect one of the energy tanks that you saved to refill health. Go straight to mother brain, freeze 3 rings, and kill her while you still have most of your health.

I have to disagree big time. Zelda had the big annoyance of starting you with 3 hearts, sure, but I think the green and bright colors made the game feel more alive, not to mention being top-down gave a greater sense of freedom. The music as well is a lot easier to jam along with, which makes the monotony not be as bad. Also, there's a lot more variety to the game than there is with Metroid.

Also, that final boss room, YEESH.

Your getting more into your personal preferences though. Metroid didnt need to be top down, the sequels were still side scrolling, and they were able to build upon the gameplay. I dont the game needed a bigger color pallet either. It would fit the games atmosphere as well. You are dead wrong about the music, Metroids soundtrack is just as classic.

The criticisms I was referring to, were the things mentioned in the original post. The game being mazey and confusing, thats also Zelda. Bombable walls and floors, Zelda has those in spades. Not to mention burnable bushes as push blocks. There are even major dungeons locked behind them. Not to mention using a whistle in the right place, the lost woods etc. You are probably blind to most of these things Id you grew up with it, but newer gamers criticize Zelda the same way. I saw one reviewer state that he doesnt believe anyone ever beat it back then without Nintendo power

How in the fuck did they expect anyone to beat this game when it first came out? Jesus. The entire complex is a labyrinth with no real direction, power ups hidden behind bombable walls and floors, and dying is so punitive. Yeah, real fucking swell dying in Mother Brain's room and respawning with only 30hp.

Fuck.

People viewed games differently when this first came out. There wasnt an expectation that you could pick up the game and just finish it 3 hours. Thats a very modern viewpoint. In my first attempt at Metroid I didnt even get through the first door. But I kept at it, and finished the game for the first time when I was 10 or 11, so did a lot of other people that I was friends with.

The game expects you to explore, and get lost, so you learn your way around the game, and that is what people did back then. The Metroid map is not very complex at all. Its very small. The had had to use similar looking area to disguise this. Look up the full game map compare to any other game in the series.

The problem is that is modern times, gamers just want to do a quick playthrough. The game isnt that confusing, you just havent taken the time to learn the layout, and you dont want to be bothered with it. Its probably not something that is going to happen on a single playthrough, it takes time.

As for the health, sure it takes time if you try and farm your way back to full, but you really shouldnt need to to have full health all the time. This is a game that gets easier as it goes on, and you have more than enough health. The only times you need full health is before a boss fight, and there are tanks near all of the bosses. There are 8 in the game, and you can only have 6. So leave 1 or 2 for refills.

OG Metroid is horrible.

I used to wonder why Metroid wasn't nearly as popular as Zelda, but after playing that, I now know why.

Most of the criticisms of Metroid also apply to Zelda, and in most cases they are even worse.
