I've heard it many times; women want a man who is equal or better than her, than the guy who tries too hard to gain her approval. Trying too hard to gain her approval probably means you're insecure or desperate and that tends to repel women. It also tells her that you're lower in status than her.

I heard that women would rather be with someone she thinks is better than her, than the guy who does everything to please her. Basically,
