Giggsalot 02/14/22 1:10:11 AM #11 | He was good for about 5 years and has been mostly appallingly bad for nearly the last 20 He's obviously a legendary figure, but at this point, I think that has to be a no --- And if you don't know, now you know. |
Topic | Rank the Tracks Week 49: Tom Waits' Rain Dogs (+ Dua Lipa results) |
Giggsalot 02/13/22 3:20:50 AM #27 | oh hey, it's my week! like most tom waits records, rain dogs is an absolute mad carnival of an album, but this one has a consistency of purpose and quality (especially in its first half) that I've never found in any of his other records. a totally singular and brilliant album. 1. Rain Dogs 2. Anywhere I Lay My Head 3. Clap Hands 4. Jockey Full of Bourbon 5. Diamonds & Gold 6. Downtown Train 7. Singapore 8. Hang Down Your Head 9. Walking Spanish 10. Time 11. Topic | Rank the Tracks Week 46: Velvet Underground & Nico (+ Superunknown results) |
Giggsalot 01/23/22 11:33:26 AM #43 | so, I actually listened to this for the first time in years and I enjoyed it slightly more than I remembered! that said, I'm definitely in the minority in this topic in that I kind of wish the album was more weird and abrasive, rather than less (I am also definitely in the minority in preferring nico's weirdo folk records like desertshore to anything by VU or reed). I'm a bit fan of the john cale's electric viola drones here, especially in venus in furs, but the closer this gets to "regular" 60s rock music the more I lose interest (exceptions made for sunday morning, which is cute as buttons, and european son, which is pretty rubbish). anyway, this topic has been fascinating because I figured that: i) VU&nico was such a classic that most people would have heard it already, and ii) the last half-century of music - so much if it influenced directly by this - had taken away some of the mystery and shock factor. that a 50 year old record, and not a completely avant-garde one at that (this isn't stockhausen), can still inspire such visceral and polarized reactions is a beautiful and super cool thing. venus in furs sunday morning femme fatale i'll be your mirror i'm waiting for the man heroin run run run all tomorrow's parties the black angel's death song european son there she goes again edit: aww, too late! boooooo --- And if you don't know, now you know. |

Giggsalot 01/19/22 12:09:21 PM #12 | ChichiriMuyo posted... Whast to say about The Velvet Underground & Nico? This album is essentially trolling in the pre-Internet era, but not in a way that I feel I can enjoy. I felt a bit of distaste for half the songs from the moment they started, while the other half tricked me into thinking I'd like the song then the band had to violate an instrument or two... every time. I honestly never want to listen to this album again, there isn't anything to enjoy here.Have you... never listened to artsy / experimental music before at all? (If so, that's fine!) It's completely reasonable not to like VU&Nico - I said already that I don't think much of it myself! - but this is one of the most beloved and influential records of all time. To suggest that either the band themselves or their fans are somehow insincere or trolling is an absolutely baffling take. --- And if you don't know, now you know. |

Topic | Rank the Tracks Week 44: Supertramp's Breakfast in America (+ Lorde results) |
Giggsalot 01/03/22 9:26:59 AM #9 | Wow, shame I missed the topic but those Lorde results are wild. It's pretty close to a flawless album, but writer in the dark so near the bottom is shameful - that's clearly a top three track. Pretty sure my ranking would have bounced the louvre from top spot too, so make of that what you will too! Don't care much about supertramp or 2000s indie folk, see you in a few weeks! --- And if you don't know, now you know. |
Topic | Rank the Tracks Week 41: Brand New's The Devil and God... (+ Rush's MP results) |
Giggsalot 12/19/21 4:16:24 PM #42 | so, uh, yeah. this thing. this isn't a style of music I typically enjoy, but this is quite the record. I agree with Chichiri that it's a profoundly difficult record to get through, but therein lies its power - it's rare to hear a record paint quite such a harrowing portrait of shame, insecurity and self-loathing as this one (the takes above calling this emotionally opaque are baffling and fascinating to me, i couldn't disagree more). the fact that we now know precisely why lacey was feeling so guilty only adds an extra layer of "challenge" to the listening experience. fortunately (or otherwise, you decide), it's worth the effort because the music is so damn good - the band really steals the best of the LCW-era modest mouse sound, and the added post-hardcore snarl of the guitars really sells the whole thing too. this is immaculately packaged despair, and there's a place in the world for that - just don't expect me to listen to it often sowing season you won't know handcuffs archers degausser limousine jesus millstone luca not the sun untitled welcome to bangkok (provisional ranking - re-listening now, subject to change) --- And if you don't know, now you know. |

Giggsalot 10/31/21 2:09:04 AM #14 | 8 sounds right to me It's undoubtedly a bit of a mess, but some of the peaks of storytelling in the series (and maybe even gaming as a whole) show up here, and I am very glad indeed that it exists --- And if you don't know, now you know. |
Topic | Rate the VG Story Day 144: Shadow of the Colossus |
Giggsalot 10/30/21 1:41:39 AM #59 | 8 I want to rate this higher to counteract all the downvotes, but 8 feels right. Does exactly what it wants to do, and the ending nearly brought a tear to my eye. Art is allowed to be subtle, and not spelling out every minute detail is not a flaw. It's not the game's fault if you lack the imagination to fill in the gaps. --- And if you don't know, now you know. |

Giggsalot 10/23/21 3:25:54 PM #26 | ChainLTTP posted... This is kind of how I feel about Speakerboxx/Love Below. It's not a consistent album and it's way too bloated, but there are about a dozen tracks that are preposterously good. That's kinda cheating though, a dozen tracks is still less than half of that album. For aquemini like 80% of the record is that good! --- And if you don't know, now you know. |

Giggsalot 10/23/21 1:21:21 PM #24 | aquemini isn't quite my favourite album of all time (definitely top 20), but I genuinely don't think i've ever heard a record with more incredible songs on it than this one. the top 11 or so songs on my ranking are all pretty much 10/10, and they're all amazing in such varied ways. an utterly staggering display of talent and creativity, and one of music's absolute high water marks. liberation da art of storytellin, part 2 synthesizer rosa parks spottieottiedopalicious aquemini skew it on the bar-b slump da art of storytellin, part 1 return of the g chonkyfire y'all scared west savannah hold on, be strong nathaniel mamacita --- And if you don't know, now you know. |
