Notice how that guy who is now gone said that Dave was supporting his bigotry and was simply voicing what most Americans believe AND that he was just joking and no one should take it seriously?

It's a textbook example of having no true principles or consistent viewpoints beyond anger and bigotry.

Also, note to @tremain07 I had former friends from middle/high school who used to frequently quote Chris Rock's lines about the difference between black people and N words as an explanation why they (non-black people) were friends with me (a black person) because I was one of the good ones.

Comedy is very often used to reinforce harmful social ideas that people very much believe.

We could just devote that energy and all those resources directly to solving our problems. The innovations weren't made because they were related to space, they were made because they were invested in and considered important. Just like scientists managed to produce a life/society saving vaccine in a year, because it was important to do so and was invested in.

Instead of hoping that the whims of billionaires will eventually benefit mankind....how about we directly try to benefit mankind?

It is the most important issue (tied with climate change), but it's intimately tied up in a lot of other issues such as race, gender, money in politics, climate change etc.

For example, please tell me how you're going to get to a real redistribution of wealth without dealing with American's core fear that it will lead to those lazy blacks getting things they don't deserve from hard working Americans?

Kamen is doing this because it's a guy he doesn't like politically/culturally. That's been clear from the first post.

Baldwin is going to be viciously hounded as a murderer for the rest of his life by right wingers that already hated him and are latching on to this as a hook for a conspiracy theory. It's already happening in real time and it's disgusting. And I say this as someone who has never really liked him in anything other than the SNL sketch about schwetty balls.

This thinking completely ignores several things about reality, such as concentration of economic and political power that comes with wealth (i.e. a few wealthy people setting political agendas and warping information ecosystems for the entire country), especially in a society that equates money with speech.

It ignores actual reality as much as you think communism does.

Delivering on some promises is better than delivering on no promises. And theres always time to try to get more passed if they expand their majority.

The Dems got a narrow majority which means theyll be able to pass a narrow portion of their agenda as they dont have total unity on social or economic issues. Thats a helluva lot better for Dem voters than getting nothing done.

And Biden will likely get two more major spending bills amounting trillions in spending passed before the year is out. If thats not something that can be polished as a positive because they didnt get all that they wanted passed, then they were fucked to begin with.

You have to convince the American people that it's enough, not me. You can talk about it costing trillions or being the biggest x in y amount of time, but unless the people feel it, that's gonna be a negative not a positive. The right will argue that Dems are bankrupting us and instituting Maoism, AND people won't get tangible benefits like free education.

People don't think or talk like those invested incremental, Democratic politics or buildings the Democratic majority.

I'm not saying it's better to pass nothing, it's absolutely better to pass something, but there's a deep, steep price to pay for shrinking the benefits.

Have you considered whether the bill is enough to actually solve problems or win elections? You seem much more focused on policing those that don't show sufficient enthusiasm for watered down versions of already watered down policies than the scale of the problems we actually face.

You're saying it's justified to deplatform people over something that can't even be proven? Just take the words of the people on Twitter that spend most of their lives looking for things to be offended by (who are not all trans btw, but most of them are white ;))? K

What does that mean to the average person? What about the lived experience of trans people that disagree? Or...Do you think all trans people have the same beliefs like some kinda creepy hivemind? All trans people aren't radical leftists with no sense of humor, just ask the the black trans woman Twitter wokescolds bullied into suicide (you will need some candles, salt, a bell, and a little of your own blood to accomplish this).

If not proven, which you seem to imply is impossible, this harm needs to at least be something clearly defined and not some vague gibberish definition...

Well for one, many trans employees at Netflix seem to think it's harmful. If you read my posts throughout this topic, I've already directly identified what's harmful about it.

Comedy can't be immune from criticism exactly because it's often taken to be closer to the truth than other speech, especially direct political speech from politicians and the media.

That's exactly why people cite George Carlin, Jon Stewart, South Park, and yes Dave Chappelle in actual political arguments. You can't rely on the idea that comedy pushes boundaries and forces people to think and then in the same breath argue that it has no influence on what people think and can't possibly harm anyone.

All Im doing is asking a question in this topic. Are trans people off limits for comedy is basically what Im asking I guess. And remember, I havent seen the Chappell thing. Im asking about it.

Non trans people should not be making trans people the butt of jokes based on confirming negative perceptions of trans people.

You can make jokes regarding trans people concerning how bigotry is big dumb, or explore stereotypes. What you can (but absolutely shouldn't) do is be a non trans person telling jokes where the punchline is "haha, they're not real women/men"

Just like a white person technically can, but shouldn't be out here telling jokes about black people where the punchline is "yeah, they actually are more naturally violent"

Well heres one, and it was like 10 posts ago. Theres also about 16 topics about this so Id take me a minute to find them all.

That's not what I thought you meant by consistency. That's one guy, and everyone else is just saying SJWs should shut up, endlessly.

Substantively, that view is really reductionist because we are not in the same positions. One group is a majority with all the cultural power, actively passing laws that harm the minority group as we speak, the other is a small minority that can't do anything to the majority, regardless of what they believe. People actually believe and act on the things that he's joking about.

It only makes sense to treat like things alike, calling to treat different things alike bakes in injustice. We aren't in a period where cis people and trans people even have all the same rights on paper like we are with race and gender, we're in the midst of an active backlash against trans rights, when trans people weren't doing so hot to begin with.

There's no economic opportunity there, no good colleges, the towns are greying and dying there, dealing with addiction issues there's no access to art, culture, public transportation, there's reduced access to healthcare, you're far away from everything else etc. People go where life is actually good or could get better.

I agree, but I don't think the right call is to literally demonize "Whiteness"

The imagery in the book includes a cartoonish devil tail. It's about as close to "white devil" as an allegory can get. White people are the villains in this story; white people are the ones who made the world hell. It's frustrating that you and others like you can't see the problem with such careless comparisons and outright statements of "whiteness = evil"

If you think "whiteness" is the problem, fuck off with that noise. I don't have time for that kind of racial bias and hatred.

Unfortunately, that's what fucking happened. White people did a lot of unspeakable things under the specific banner of whiteness, because of whiteness, to preserve the separation and caste system that placed whiteness above anything else. They did it because they were taught that they were better than others because they were in that made up category called white.

If you're mad that whiteness as a concept has a bad connotation, that's because it's never been used for anything good or led to anything good. The category has always been a tool to divide and conquer.

That does not mean individual white human beings or people with pale skin are bad. Criticizing the specific social practice of categorizing some people as white and others as non-white and everything that's come with that does not mean that you are automatically bad simply for being white. Whiteness as a concept is bad. Being white/pale/lightskinned/descended from Europeans is not bad. Do you understand?

Kneeling for the anthem is one thing I find distasteful. I'm sorry it's gotten to the point where people are the bad guys for defending it.

Even if you say that you're kneeling before the flag to protest the government, you have to know it's symbolic value to other people. The flag to them represents the soldiers that died for freedom, God and country, apple pie, Leave It to Beaver, wild horses, and everything else that people love about this nation or the nation they perceive it to be.

There are individuals out there who say that the American flag and the Confederate flag mean the same thing. Protesting the American flag to them is protesting the flag of oppression. I don't agree with that sentiment. I agree with their right to speak, their right to live free of fear, and their right to protest injustice. But I think the individuals who target the flag, the anthem, or "America" as a concept are aiming for the wrong targets.

It's a brilliant strategy though.

Not from Colin Kaepernick. He's just some football player who needed a distraction after a less-than-stellar season. But for the people who have highlighted and exploited these protests, who have made it a litmus test for one's values, it's an absolutely brilliant way of sewing division. It makes it so that you either believe in America or in the value of Black lives -- you can't believe both.

So some have to respect the symbolic meaning of the flag to people who aren't them, but others don't. The people who view the flag as a symbol of slavery, imperialism, and oppression should take into account what it means for the people who benefitted from all that or it's disrespectful, but not the other way around?

What's the principle behind that conclusion? All that the people who view the flag as a good thing think of when they see the flag waving can also be seen as something taken from someone else. The land (from natives), the wealth (from black people), the troops (lives of brown people all across the world), 50s Americana (women in general) etc. Seems like they're targeting the right symbol for sure.

Division doesn't need to be sewn, American history has already provided it by class, race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, nationality, etc. Recognizing the division and different perspectives on the same ideas is not what creates the division.

This right here is the part that makes it an accusation against all white people. They're now guilty by receiving. Read that page with the "contract" on it, in post #65.

That's pretty blatantly accusing "whiteness" of all of those traits. It's telling all white people that we don't do enough to compensate for what other people did in the past. Not us. Not even our families.

Our race.

The thing is, it was done on purpose, with the specific intention of benefiting white people as a race/class/category, and it in fact does that. Because of whiteness. Not literally because of your pale skin, but because people created a caste system in which things were taken from some and given to others or reserved for some and not others. That generated wealth. You can't just now turn around and ignore that and pretend we're all individuals that popped into existence 10 minutes ago with no connection to anyone else and no connection to history. Or I guess you can because that's pretty damn convenient and it's what most people do.

We're not the ones who created those categories or that effect, but we all have to deal with it. As individuals and as a collective because that's what it took to get here. Acting as groups.

You shouldn't feel "guilty" about that, just like I don't feel "guilty" about all the benefits that accrued to men from thousands of years of patriarchy and control. But the non-sociopathic reaction is to recognize that fucked up things happened and are happening and do what you can individually and collectively to fix it so that the same outcomes don't reoccur and injustice isn't perpetuated and passed down to yet another generation of the deprived and the beneficiaries of the depriving.

None of these people are progressive icons. She volunteered to be an unelected queen in robes passing judgment on everyone's rights and all of the members of the court agree on most things, regardless of the terrible consequences for workers, consumers, voters, etc.

She's also ran in elite circles almost her entire life and is over 80. There's essentially no one in those categories that has good views on everything.

But Couric felt she had to protect the liberal feminist icon on so many people's coffee mugs and t-shirts.

Half the globe decided it wants a redo of the 20th century but without changing anything.

They usually do lol. You'd think they'd just own it.

They think they're entitled to act the same way as fascists, want the same things, use the same rhetoric etc but be considered fundamentally different because they say you should call them something else.

That's why they get so mad at any person or entity that might correctly identify them, whether it's the media, academia, leftists, etc. Anything that slows or interrupts their conquest is demonic.

You see it all the way down to this very website, all the way up to world leaders and everywhere in between.

Which is worse? Barring someone from playing or enjoying a game entirely or having a few people complain about a lack of difficulty?
