John Krasinski came back at us with another one, right after lulling me into a false sense of security with Some Good News. The events of this film are NOT good news, but fortunately they're entirely fictional. Right?....*thinks spooky thoughts as he watches the skis*

So for those of you who haven't seen the first film in the franchise (actually you could probably get away with watching the second one on its own cuz I don't remember much about the first, lol), A Quiet Place is about aliens who come here to basically wipe out everything that makes a sound. Think Tremors but complete global saturation and they can go anywhere and are super fast and overpowered. It's really unfair when you think about it, and they just come down and attack a lot of people for no reason.

Relatability: 10/10. I identified STRONGLY with the characters in this movie and really wanted to see them defeat the monsters. And to be clear, these...things are monsters. They can't be negotiated with. They are totally blind and they aren't here to promote peace or be your friend and work things out rationally with you. They want you gone. Once you're in range they WILL come after you and destroy you for ANYTHING you say, no matter what it is. You don't want to be anywhere near these disgusting creatures and every time they come around, I just wish they would go away.

What would you do, then? Well, what's left of humanity is in underground hideouts that are soundproofed as best they can. It's a 'safe' space but they're not confined to it by their choice, and things could go bad at any time (1 of the hiding places is a suffocation risk). Make 1 wrong move and the hideous beasts will try to take you out, which of course does happen to some people who were too loud or just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But nothing's invincible and eventually, people figure out that sound-based creatures are weak to loud noises. Seems way too late that they figured this out where the army did not, but okay. Our characters find out that the way to fight back is to not stay quiet, but to get louder and more confrontational. The best defense is a good offense and MORE noise! But did they figure this out in time? You will have to see it to find out.

Overall I give this movie an 8.5/10, usually I give generic good movies an 8/10 but as you can see I identified strongly with the characters here and wanted them to succeed against the fictional monsters. If you've seen this movie before, what did you think about it?

In middle school when my friend had a sleepover and we played 007 Nightfire a lot. I stayed up to do single player without anyone else awake asking for a turn. They found me hunched over the ottoman, controller in hand.

There are several thousand "active" posts still parked in my old board hunter topics. A few years ago the site extended the topic purge rate to infinity if there are only a few topics open on a board, because it looks better on paper to have that AMP number up. Those are topics from what was once the 14th most active user, along with the other accounts that posted in them. All those topics were locked in advance though, so there goes any future activity. Oh well, back to reddit.

I finally watched this movie after getting recommendations from people on the old board. Maybe they are still around. I hereby rate it according to the following criteria:

Writing: 10/10, very early on I was struck by it and you'll see things you're not gonna see in films today. Some of the different gangs have weird gimmicks but it's not over-the-top (not that there would be anything wrong with that). Wikipedia says pretty much all the critics viewed it negatively at the time, but President Reagan was a fan. This is one time I think execs had it right, because I'm watching the new cut where they did "original vision" and added an intro for the Greek fable and comic book transitions throughout the film, which I found unnecessary. They don't fit into what you'd see from the time period either - more modern style transitions that should've looked early 80s'ish - so I thought the comic stuff wasn't needed and jarring. But if we just take the original, I stick with 10.

and that's ok. 8/10.

Relevance: 9/10. In this decayed, decrepit shell of a city - a pale, pathetic shadow of what it once was - the different gangs and cliques roam the streets and are all out to get the warriors, while The Man is out to hassle them as well. A talented, charismatic figure rises up and aims to stop the infighting, and he's very close to accomplishing his goal, claiming he will unite everyone against The Man once and for all...only to get wasted, with the villain saying later that he had no real reason to do it and just went after him for fun.

The warriors are chased down throughout the underground, followed and obsessed over by the entire city and accused of many things which they didn't do. The warriors are on the run for now but some of them want to stand up and fight back, so they get into scrapes and when they fight they always end up on top.

When it's not one of the other cliques getting up in their face, coming after their turf or fighting over any other personal grudge they hold with the warriors, the clearly unwell bad guy is going after them and projecting all his crimes and insecurities onto them. The villain tracks the warriors down, peaking at that famous scene where he shouts at them to COME OUT AND PLAYYY, but the final showdown that follows is very anticlimactic. When the warriors are in their own environment and the truth comes out, the bad guy gets owned real quick and is revealed as a sniveling, pathetic little crybaby who is easily dunked on and done away with once he doesn't have his protection behind him.

"You Warriors are good. Real good."

"The best."

But I take 1 point off because I don't approve of criminality or illegal activities.

Overall I will give it a 9/10.
