Other than it's second-to-none food options and museums, it's overrated, expensive and crappy. I say this as someone who's been to NYC countless times, and someone who's lived a short distance from it for most of their life.

The only people who romanticize NYC at this point are people who've never been, rich people who can easily afford to live there, or obnoxious people that think visiting/living there is a badge of honor because they've seen it in TV and movies.

Plenty of things to do in NYC other than food and museums. It's a great walking city, lots of neighborhoods to explore, lots of history, great for concerts,
