I guess you can see it as dated and what not, which of course it is, but that's not really what I get out of it. I never really was a huge fan of this movie, but I found it enjoyable, I always liked jack, and for some reason my mom loved this movie despite not really paying attention to much movies. (I think she just related to the anxiety disorder Jack had)

But anyway, I saw it again the other day, I pop it in every now and again every couple of years for nostalgias sake, because nostalgia and its pleasant enough, but I felt like it never was hitting me like it was supposed to. I always found elements in the story awkward and random, I never felt like the story ever actually had anything to say other than being a vehicle for good acting scenarios.

But Jack's performance hit me a little different last time I watched it, maybe because I've been dealing with my own neurotic behaviors post covid which made a scene with Helen Hunt mid movie also really get to me in ways in didn't before. She's about to leave if Jack doesn't give her a compliment because hes anti social and weird and has like this inferiority complex I guess so he talks over everybody all the time and makes the attention always about him, etc. but he goes on this speech saying he finally took some pills to make him better because of her. I always thought this speech was so cheesy, especially Helen Hunts reaction, but I don't know I kind of got it, this time. Jack's character was completely isolated, not even letting a dog in, but eventually he opened up to other people and it changed him for the better at the end. I mean lucky for Jack his character was rich and he could afford people to be nice to him, but it's so hard in the real world for people to connect and help each other and seek real actual understanding, and thats what needs to be done to bring actual human advancement and improvement, but we live in this isolated competitive environment ...

Liquid smoke is created by heating hardwood sawdust or chips in a tank until they smolder. The gases and particles are cooled so that they condense and liquefy usually with the help of water. ... Liquid smoke is often used as a seasoning to add smokey flavor to foods.

my mistake...its burnt sawdust

they have a lot of money?

This pandemic situation has left me relatively well off, I have a pretty good credit score, I can theoretically do a lot of stuff now and it just stresses me out. I treat myself pretty poorly and mostly buy stuff for other people to see them happy, I gamble in volatile stocks just to feel something since I'm semi depressed (was up $1000 last week then lost half of it the next day) and I've suddenly realized I have no idea what I want to do now that I have the slightest smidge of options and not living month to month. Survival is basically all I know. It kind of sucks.

Loved how he was basically playing Uncle Eddie in ID4 and saved the entire planet doing so.

totally forgot that was him.

"alright you alien assholes" was probably my favorite line in the movie, but i thought he said scumbags (maybe i saw an edited version on tv or something)

so i'd randomly say "up yours, you alien scumbags!" randomly when i was a kid because i thought it was funny.

Just saw Freaked (1993) and he hams it up as the mad scientist and it dawned on me, I've never seen anything he was in where I didn't like his presence. I mean sure, he was most memorable in the vacation movies, but everything else I've seen him in wasn't bad. In my opinion he was the best part of the 85-86 SNL run (which is called the worst season of SNL ever) and I don't know, just seemed we never saw his full potential.

I was watching old media news about the 64 release and they were interviewing some kid playing the demo kiosk of a 64 on his way home from school and how happy he looked and it reminded me of my childhood.

My parents never bought me any of the systems other kids had when I was growing up, so I got most of my video game exposure from other kids houses, demo kiosks, and arcades. Video games were like crack to me because they were this forbidden fruit I rarely ever got to enjoy on my own terms, so I didnt understand the kids who had a shit ton of games and multiple systems were kind of bored with their stuff? I even noticed it how they played their games, like when I played sonic I wanted to collect every ring and just savor every second of gameplay while they just ran through the level. For some reason the kids who owned every game were arguably less passionate about the games as I was. Now I have a weird habit of starting up a game I never owned but made an impression on me back in the day, Ill play the few beginning worlds to relive that exciting feeling, and then I too will also get bored and stop appreciating the game and turn it off only for a month or two start it up again and relive the exciting feeling of the first impression it originally gave me .

Because of me playing video games less frequently, but at the time same time they being so impactful to me, my memory catalogs things by video games. I remember where I was, who I was, what I was doing the first time I ever saw such and such specific game instantly whenever I see a game of my past. Its the strangest thing. Awhile back I got a genesis mini and was playing sf2, and somehow instantly remembered this old playmate I would play this game with, how wed get stuck at ryu, how he said oh my dad can beat him, i remember his first and last name, this is a playmate from 25 years when I was a little kid and this memory wouldnt have been triggered at all if I never played this specific version of sf2 with this specific 6 button genesis dpad. games are weird yo.

I also noticed early 80s home gaming is vastly underappreciated and looked at as too primitive. While my parents never supplied me any recent systems I did have access to a ti99 and an intellivision while most kids my age had a snes, and I played the hell out of them. Even at the time , even as a kid, they seemed like such mysterious relics from another age, but they brought me enjoyment none the same. So now me not passing up or even preferring older historical media has been hardbaked into my personality.

Also in this news reel people looked genuinely super exited for the 64. Like it was magic. I dont think anybody is actually getting that excited for a ps5 or xbox or switch. Theres no demo kiosks at stores (even before covid) that kids are drawn to like a magnet because its so amazing. nothing is impressive anymore.
