Everything about it is great and fun and works for the game perfectly. The pacing is probably the highlight? The extra endings are a big perk that gets it the extra .5 from me. Basically a flawless story, but it doesn't have as many special moments as some games I'd rate higher storywise.

I highly recommend a similar game called Overboard! that came out a few months ago. You play as a woman who murders her husband on a boat voyage, and you have to figure out how to avoid getting caught until you can get off the boat. It has a similar formula where you learn things every loop, but the characters and story and everything are a lot better, IMO. It's also less obtuse.

Ratchet and Death's Door will probably get some GotY attention. Ys 9 is my personal favorite 2021 game so far. Overboard! is very good if anyone wants to check out what's probably my favorite indie game of 2021 so far (I have played a fairly large number).

Generally the idea would be that if not for the MS purchase, it never would've gotten a Series S/X version and would've been last gen only (like many games this year have been). MS funded an upgraded version - they didn't pay for exclusivity.

For whatever reason remasters often show up in the rankings for a few days or weeks and then disappear. SM3DW + Bowser's Fury was on top for a while before it disappeared. And yeah, no games this year in the 90s is pretty sad.

I think this game gets a lot of leeway because it's a Star Wars story that isn't dumb, and those are in short supply. Change the name and gave the setting a different coat of paint and people would like it much less.

Yes, the story would get a lower score with a worse setting.

I'd rate plenty of Star Wars stories highly though. Having a great setting goes a long way.

...Weird, considering it seems to be a Chinese game.

I think it looks pretty cool, other than the combat, which seems like it could be mediocre. Hopefully that part's good (as well as the other parts).

Finished the game. I'd agree that it's a little worse than AV1, but it's still good. The exploration and world design are the biggest improvements I'd say. All the powers feel great, and every area is fun to explore. The lack of combat/bosses was a bit of a letdown, but it didn't hurt the game too much for me. The story was probably the main disappointing part. It wasn't bad, but the section I mentioned in my first post was the best part by a lot, and otherwise it wasn't nearly as interesting as AV1. There wasn't really anything as cool as the Rusalki.

It's also weird that the dev called it partly a sequel when it's 100% a prequel. <_< I mean, yeah, it gave more information about the world, but that's what prequels do.

I really like megaman games, but honestly I think the genre is a bit dated. I feel like good well tuned metroidvanias are megaman games that aren't linear.

There's really no reason the megaman stages have to be completely independent of each other besides tradition

You can have better level design when you don't require stages to link together.

What chapters are you on? I believe S2 skipped 90-99 and ended with 100-101, so I'm not sure S3 will go back and do the chapters in the 90s.

So far it's had very little tie-in to the first game, though there is some. I assume it's made so you could start with either. That said, I think the first is a better game (so far).

Anyone else been playing this? I'm about 5 hours in, 46% Map/40% Items. Really did not dig it for the first hour, hour and a half, but it's been getting consistently better since then. I made some mistakes at the start going to the water area first, which felt bad since I had basically no abilities, and I even missed the water ability right at the start of that area, so I got stuck in a bunch of places I had to load my save to get out of. Thankfully, the save and quit functionality in this game is great, so I kept all my progress, but I wish it had been designed so I couldn't screw myself over like that. Anyway, once I started getting more powers, the game got much better. Hack is pretty fun, and it's neat seeing what it does to various enemies, though it's a little annoying that you have to prioritize leveling it up to explore everywhere. Every ability feels pretty good, and the game's great at coming up with fairly unique abilities IMO. Where the game really gets great is when you start getting more drone-related powers. I think some of them were in the first game, but they're so much fun! There was even a boss in drone form! Totally wild stuff.

Other aspects - storywise, I'm not generally as into it so far as I was with the first game. The mysteries aren't as compelling, and it doesn't have impactful lines, like DEMON, ATHETOS SAY, KILL! The art is solid, and I'm kinda glad they took away the character portraits? AV1's protagonist was kinda hideous in the portraits, and AV2 had the same ugly portraits in the first trailer, so it's neat that those got axed. The glitchiness level isn't as high, which is a shame, but the area design is probably a bit better in general. It feels real open ended, like you always have a ton of options where to go. Seeing bosses just hanging out as you go through areas is kind of amazing and feels unlike anything I've seen in any other game I've played, though I'm sure it's been done before.

The last thing I did is the part where (actual spoilers) your main Arm takes over your body and forces you to be a drone. Got up to the power that lets me transform into a human again, but with a badass look now. That section was awesome, and cranked my fondness for the story way up. Scripted segments in Metroidvanias can be fucking incredible, and the way they did that one was super cool. Loved it.

I think the early parts are good too. Some of the alternate endings are excellent, namely Ferris and Suzuha's.

One thing I'll add is that I always liked the sci-fi parts. Mikado coming back was kinda BS, but I didn't mind, because his parts were generally great.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth beated.

Hmm. This was certainly better than the first game. Basically every character has a much better showing here (other than the devil made flesh, Kuon). Haku especially is a huge improvement, along with Nekone. The game being more serious is a big plus, though the comedy was somewhat improved as well. I wouldn't say it's necessarily the best part of the game, but the opening few hours is when I most into it. Everything was a big change, and they were consistently delivering good content. Unfortunately, I still feel like the pacing wasn't the greatest in general. There are some real slow parts where they're hanging around in Emmakamuy not really doing anything for hours, particularly the spot of the game after Kuon comes back. There's a lot more bad comedy content there. Even the serious content can be a bit slow at times, but that's better. There's a spot maybe 2/3 of the game where they mention a certain battle being the final battle, but the game stretches out quite a lot beyond that. Not necessarily in bad ways, but it generally felt like too much.

I generally wasn't that into the villains. None of the masterminds felt particularly smart, especially Raiko. He's supposed to be a super strategist but almost none of his strategies are really good. Woshis being the one who poisoned Mikado and Anju is super obvious, but no one figures it out. The whole final battle happens because Kuon is an evil asshole who can't accept people dying (am I the only one who hates the cliche of people insulting their friend as that friend dies?). What was even the message of the end of the game? "If your friend/love interest dies, don't ever get over their death?" I despised that part too. I hated the harem aspects too, which are cranked up from Deception. It feels more natural in Uta 1, since that's a hentai game and the MC bangs all the girls, but it sucked in Deception/Truth where it's absolutely pointless.

Question: Why did Hakuowlo let Woshis have the Master Key? It feels like a lot of death and destruction would've been avoided if he'd given it to Haku instead.

On the plus side, the gameplay is way better here. The mechanics have a lot more depth to them, and there are way more interesting battles. I understood the mechanics quite a bit better, and though I still didn't grasp all of them by the end (particularly the elemental stuff), I definitely got them better than I did in Deception. And it did succeed in being emotional occasionally. My favorite scene in the game was when Oshtor's mother revealed that she knew Haku's true identity and viewed him as a second son. Gimme more of that. That's the real shit.

In conclusion, the game's definitely an improvement over Deception, but I still liked the first game best. This wasn't quite the Muv-Luv Alternative to Deception's Extra.
