Movie #17, Saw. I love this movie and wow do the sequels completely lose track of what made it so cool

Movie #16, Halloween Kills. My gut feeling is that this felt like the Halloween 2 to Halloween. Less sneaky scary, more total carnage. I liked it but I can see how people might not

Movie #15, Phantasm. Speaking of movies carried by an amazing lead villain. This was like someone told the actor "Do a vague approximation of a human except nothing is quite right"

The first short of VHS actually has a movie sequel of its own, Siren. It's...not as good but the lead villain is fun

I never get used to Sam Neill's character in that movie after Jurassic Park. Dammit Grant why would you do this

Anyway movie #14, Lake Mungo. That...I don't even know if I could call that a scary movie so much as overwhelmingly moody and sad. Very, very good though

I think my favorite thing about Unfriended is how they manage to convey a lot of emotion through nothing but someone fucking about on a computer screen. They'll start to type, double back, erase themselves, make stupid typos as the spooky shit ramps up. It's really impressive and I've never seen another movie like it. Well, possibly the sequel but I remember that being bad

Anyway, I might watch Exorcist 3 next. I've somehow never seen it before

Movie #12, Unfriended. Which I think may be my personal "No one appreciates this movie except me" movie. It just does things so well for a movie that's literally one camera shot never changing

It did have some fun cameos (Brad Dourif and Robert Englund) and a pretty bitchin soundtrack, but still, aie yie yie

Movie #11, Urban Legend. You ever find yourself watching a pretty average horror movie, and then there's a scene so incredibly dumb it just leaves you going what at your screen throughout the entire next scene? Welcome to Urban Legend

So a character is murdered. Not only are they murdered, they're strangled with another person in their dorm room, left in a pool of blood, the killer *writes a taunting message in their blood* and another taunting message on their laptop (which they unplugged first but still). Next scene, the campus police declare this was clearly a suicide, the dean agrees and no one investigates further

What. What. What

Also I really like the TVTropes theory that this is a prequel to Warhammer 40K and the ship went through the Warp

Movie #9, Nightmare on Elm Street 5. It's not a bad premise really, but Freddy is full on silly asshole here. He was scary for like three movies

Movie #8, Halloween 2018. I can't say enough good things about this movie. It's almost a remake of the original as far as the scenes go, just turned on its head because Laurie has had 40 years to evolve as a character. The rest of it is a string of people trying to ascribe human motives to the black hole of evil that is Michael and inevitably eating a knife for it

It was kind of an amazing moment when I was sitting there trying to figure out if there was a pattern to the shit Michael was doing, then I was like wow, I'm doing it too

Movie #7, Let's Scare Jessica To Death. Uh wow, that took awhile to get rolling but was really good once it did. Basically a woman gets released from a sanitarium for unspecified issues, her husband and his friend take her to go live in a secluded house in the woods. They meet a homeless woman squatting in the house who befriends them, and then shit rapidly gets *really* weird and it becomes a matter of whether Jessica is crazy, being messed with or if there's something else at work. Yes

Movie #5, The Strangers: Prey at Night. Hahaha, well here's a movie for anyone who absolutely hated how the last movie ended. It feels like they played it totally straight until there was about a half hour left, then one of the writers hit the other writer over the head and went 'Nah, time for these killers to eat shit'

I watched that movie a couple of weeks ago and almost immediately got the twist for a silly reason. I'd been playing Hitman and one of the levels has a disguise where you're wearing a mask on the back of your head. I was like, hey wait a sec

Movie 2, Nightmare on Elm Street 4. Well this was an interesting premise, just because one of the characters could have stopped Freddy cold by dying and doesn't, causing about six more deaths to put him down. Moral ambiguity

I'm planning to watch a scary movie every day this October. First was Nightmare on Elm Street 3, which is kind of a funny movie since Freddy hasn't gone full on silly ham yet, but you can see him getting there

Also I always forget a very young Laurence Fishburne is in this
