I think that's an unhelpful question. What I care about is maximizing the standard of living for as many people as possible. There are several obvious ways to further that goal, like guaranteeing housing to all, making healthcare single payer, investing in much better public infrastructure, improving working conditions via unions, and fighting climate change.

Yeah but the statement i made that you disagreed with was that "any American can live a good and comfortable life with a little effort ". In my mind, that meant a roof over your head and a full belly every night.

This is laughably inaccurate. Our awful healthcare system alone leads to many lives being ruined when unexpected medical issues arise. People can lose their homes when their source of income is cut off out of their control. Lots of people live without air conditioning in hot summers.

What do you consider a good life?

The most powerful first world nations have engaged in brutal imperialism as a means to accumulate wealth. This can lead to an increase in the standard of living in one country at the expense of misery in the victim countries. Billionaires may drive imperialism to build up their fortune and won't oppose the standard of living going up in their own country if it doesn't pose a threat.

Ultra wealthy individuals have existed for centuries, like the coal barrons of the early 20th century. Life was miserable back then while billionaire equivalents built up massive fortunes by exploiting workers and violently suppressing their attempts at unionization.

Even if that is true, literally everyone in America can live a good and comfortable life with a little effort. So why punish the billionaires?

I wish people would realize that your average American doesn't care at all about politics. Like, I'm glad some people do but what you are doing is akin to me saying that because I like football, everyone likes football. in terms of hating on AOC for this, i don't get it. people can't party and also be taxed? why is partying with people who (should) pay taxes problematic? Why can't you enjoy your money and also pay more in taxes. I think her point, and others, is that rich people can pay more whilst still being plenty rich, which is totally true/valid.

The point is is that she is saying other people should give up more without actually doing it herself. Its like if a person said people shouldn't eat meat while eating pulled pork

I mean, it kind of is. Once again, this is an event begging rich people to donate to the art museum. So, freaking them out and getting them to clutch their checkbooks kind of defeats the purpose of the gala.

Yeah but I mean, the person saying it matters. It would be like someone advocating for the homeless but won't give them food or let them sleep on their couch just for a night. These people want everybody else to fight their battles for them. Its hard to take them or their message seriously when they are blatantly being hypocrites

The phrase isn't the issue. The issue is the person doing it. She has money and doesn't put it towards anything. How do you take someone seriously when they won't live up to their own cause?

I mean, as another poster pointed out, she is one of the rich yuppies. She doesn't exactly do anything meaningful with her money. She has all these grand ideas but she would rather other people pay for it. Thats what she is getting called out from.

Btw, she could have sent the same message wearing a garbage bag saying tax the rich

Love how people are complaining about her attending this apparently fancy gala, whilst the people she wants to tax earn more in a year than most individual attendees will earn in their entire lifetimes.

The wealth of the mega rich is incomprehensible. Complaining that a dress designed to draw attention to that fact costs money is puerile.

I mean I think the issue is that she is being a very obvious hypocrite.
