I don't understand how this isn't political suicide. There's gonna be a bunch of pissed off unemployed people that won't forgive this.

Because of social conservatism. The state seems seems to lean slightly left economically, but because of racism, fear of immigrants, culture war BS and others the GOP is dominant here.

It's frustrating too, because so many vote for those things, then when the GOP politicians do the opposite to block those things, not only do they not hold them accountable, they vote them back in.
