this work sounds like its worth more then $17 an hour, you're putting yourself in a decent amount of danger for it after all. you like where you work which is important, but that's a huge bump in pay; best suggestion i'd have is to do what others here have suggested, take the offer to your current boss and ask for a bump in your pay to retain you. probably wont match the offer, sounds like your area is a smaller scale operation? but slightly lesser pay for a position you like beats better pay for a position you might hate.

Oh it is, it's a chronic problem in the industry. The areas that have managed to form a union all make $24+

But my coworkers all eat up the propaganda. "Well it's a fun job so we don't need to be paid that much"

Some guys tried to form a union at my old place and they were all fired in retaliation

is this related to avalanche prevention? only thing i can think of when i see mountain rescue and explosives program in the job description, i remember reading a story about a guy that essentially fired mortars into likely avalanche sites to set them off safely.

Yeah my job now is a combination of ski patrol, avalanche control, and backcountry rescue. I love emergency medicine, my new job would be pretty much all avalanche work

It's hard to imagine a situation that I wouldn't accept an offer to double my pay, but why don't you know the pay exactly if they have the offer out already? Or is it like a base of $30 with a chance to make more?

Yeah it depends on the work done that day, it's mountain guiding and education. It's something like $28 base pay + fat tips

Yeah I want to go home to my wife and dog, I wouldn't like being gone all the time

I work in mountain rescue in a small town -- I love my seasonal winter job and the people I work with. I am crucial to the program and besides my boss am the only one who is legally allowed to operate our explosives program (a rare certificate that takes 3 years), which is critical to the company. They pay me $16/hr, are bumping me to $17/hr next year. They also offer me a cushy and easy summer job and the schedule is great, and the work is close to home, and it's very rewarding

My new job offer: $30-35/hr. It's further from home, I have to stay overnight 3-4 nights a month, not sure what I'd do for work in the summer. Harder work, higher standards. Still pretty fun, but not very rewarding

I'm torn. I'm very salty about the offensively low pay raise my boss offered me

They refused my request for two days off, which I am using to take a class to get more money, so fuck them, I'm taking it off
