In terms of policies? Large safety net, socially and materially, so people have the ability to live the life they want. Whatever that ends up meaning. That's too broad and stuffing l difficult a question though

4 questions:

What is your best defense of Critical Race Theory?
What is your best criticism of Critical Race Theory?
What is your best defense of Cancel Culture?
What is your best criticism of Cancel Culture?

Take your time, I know you can't possibly strongly believe in everything you will say since the stances involved are flip-sides. That said I respect your opinion and value somebody who can see both sides of arguments such as yourself.

I don't really have a good answer. I've been trying to spend some time better understanding CRT but haven't finished the books I've been reading. From a surface level, I don't particularly see anything wrong with the idea that we can look at how and why society, institution, and laws and normalized and how they can impact different people and races.

If you're leading into the topic regarding some of the things that some schools are doing, I guess it seems to me that it's like any other thing. Some stupid stuff is being done and bring incorrectly labeled CRT, and some stuff is overblown. I'm not a fan of the culture war scare mongering of trying to catastrophize methods that are different. Or the tone policing going on in those stories.

Like I said, I don't have some specific answer, I just tend to think that there's a level of tone policing going on and I find it hard to get worked up over the stories I hear.

Cancel culture? I guess it depends on how it's defined. Let's say we define cancel culture as a company doing punitive actions against an employee due to outside criticism. I don't really have much of any issue at all with people in Twitter getting worked up about people and companies. Mainly because I don't take Twitter seriously and I don't think most employers should either. They forget that most online shit dies down and that people have short memories. And like, Twitter and social media is such a small percentage of people.
So I put bad employment decisions on the company and I wish there were stronger employee protections. As I've mentioned in the past, if the criticism is valid and the company does believe the person working there has some level of power that can impact the other coworkers, then they have to do what they have to.

Now, I don't think people should be assholes online. And people shouldn't be purposely digging up old info for vengeful reasons.

In regards to this stuff, my most cynical point of view is that the most ardent critics of CRT and cancel culture are being dishonest in how they use it, and civility politics as a cudgel. I need to flesh it out more but as I posted in the other topic, I find something horribly unsettling regarding some of these critics. The same group will state in one moment how they're "just asking questions about the science of IQ and black people should be able to not take these questions about their inferiority so personally."

While in a different topic essentially say "no, you must not use the term whiteness or it will cause white students to feel discriminated against and hurt their feelings. In fact let's get some laws out there to minimize this happening because it's so divisive."
The above is a bit of a straw man I admit, but it comes across as that way to me.

One good example is the often superfluous structures of management found in workplaces, where you've got many levels of middle management that often have disproportionate power over their workers

Or the immunity from repercussions that police enjoy by being a class above regular citizens

I guess I'm for it, if I agree with exactly how those things would be dismantled. Seems like that's pretty much where differing thoughts would be.

Like, I'm really for really strong employee protection against people being fired, but I wish the anti cancel culture people didn't swing so much to the other side where they just believe everything is being done unfairly.

I'm just annoyed right now, but a lot of shit always seems like "we're just asking questions, black people should be able to not take these questions so personally." While in a different topic, "no, you must not use the term whiteness or it will cause white students to feel discriminated against and hurt their feelings."

Richard Taylor had violated the schools Bias, Discrimination, and Harassment policy by asking a question in an introductory history class. The class was on the biological impact of transatlantic trade, and the question, in the last slide of his presentation: Do the positives justify the negatives?

This isn't what the complaint was about. He asked students to justify slavery.

https://texasnewstoday.com/a-professor-who-turned-into-a-police-officer-sued-st-johns--slavery-questions/154612/?amp

Taylor taught a lesson on Columbian exchange when he insisted that he asked students to delve into the pros and cons of trade, including the trade of slaves at the time.

Towards the end of the Columbus exchange class in September, Taylor allegedly asked students to justify slavery and brought him at least one complaint.

Also the fact that he had multiple complaints for similar actions when he was a police officer. Not to mention the clearly alt right things he posted on Twitter.

They also looked at his Twitter account, which appears to show the belief that SJU Radical claimed to be a racist.

A tweet tagged with Ben Shapiro said: Cancellation culture is coming at St. Johns University in Queens. Do they have any advice that Im a former cop and picking out to lie?

Taylor specifically tagged Ben Shapiro to get help with cultural cancellation

Taylor seems to have liked the tweet that called Black Lives Matter a domestic terrorist group.

'Taylor also threatened to swing to supporters of Black Lives Matter with his fists raised."

As a privately funded school St. John's is well within it's rights to fire someone for those actions. The same way religious schools can fire teachers for being gay.

Ya, seems like there's more to this story than was originally presented.

This is a tangent, but I find this from TCs post.. Kinda funny.

The counter-argument is that history is painful and understanding it requires confronting even the uncomfortable parts. That confrontation means subjecting historys most difficult chapters to the same inquiry any other topic would be given.

Some of the same people who would agree with that statement are probably some of the same people who agree with limiting, (edit: through the use of law), how various subjects are thought at schools because they say it's too emotionally difficult and harmful to the students. The students and subjects they care about in these instances is what makes the difference

I come with this topic with questions. There are many dishonest fucks in the www, I am not one of them. I am pro-trans, but I wish to know about something I have been wondering but afraid to ask because people could think I am anti-trans (I am not).

Isn't gender a social construct? Meaning that we humans came up with ideas of what is manly and womanly. In the past pink was supposed to be the color for boys because it was seen as baby-red, and red is the color of blood and gore: https://www.thevintagenews.com/2019/05/01/pink-blue/

.

Interesting info. I'm curious, what does raising someone as a gender entail? Are they saying raising them with the societal expectations of that gender? Clothing they wear, body expectations, how they are treated by other people, etc?
In the case of David Weimer, he was raised as a girl. So yeah - clothes, expected behavior, presentation etc.

But in a later post, I go into this whole ramble about how perception ties into gender identity, and how perception is everything we really have. You can see how different cultures have different gender standards, and there are cultures past and present where there are third genders, or gender expression outside of the gender binary. The trans experience is probably very different depending on what part of the world you live in, because the way different cultures perceive gender and how it's expressed does vary from place to place.

I'm curious if that means society could be organized in a way to reduce dysphoria through how different genders are regarded. Limiting the need for transitioning as a means to reduce the dysphoria

Theres a point in the dysphoria bible that states that a child of one gender cant be raised as the other, because its not a learned frame of mind - people are born trans, and being raised according to their biological sex is disorienting and damaging to them over the long run. But similarly, you cant raise a cis person as the other gender - because the same dysphoria issues that affect trans people affect them.

There have been experiments in raising children as the other sex, and they have gone extremely poorly, because an AMAB or AFAB person whose gender identity matches their sex doesn't respond well to being raised as the opposite gender.

Interesting info. I'm curious, what does raising someone as a gender entail? Are they saying raising them with the societal expectations of that gender? Clothing they wear, body expectations, how they are treated by other people, etc?
