It's weird, isn't it? In principle, it should all be the same, but for whatever reason everybody (myself included) views it as some separate thing. There's not much precedent for it with other media. For instance, j-horror is still seen as being a part of horror. When people think of musicals, they don't necessarily balk when Bollywood comes up. But I'll be reading a superhero manga or webtoon and I'll view it as something fundamentally different.

I suspect that might have developed from the "anime is not the same as cartoons" mentality that prevailed during the late '90s anime / manga boom.

Meanwhile I wound up reading some of Sanderson's prose and I just wasn't feeling it. And, on the subject of things not doing it for me, I've decided to go through my library to see what I probably won't ever read. It started when I got one paragraph into The Hero and the Crown (which I think I just grabbed at a library book sale when filling a bag) and I just couldn't imagine reading the rest. I think I probably have a lot of titles like that in my library.

By coincidence, I have been considering a reread of The Hero and the Crown, since the last time I picked it up was for a book report in 5th Grade, and I did not understand a lot of things about it back then.

I would consider Sanderson to be a great worldbuilder, but not necessarily the best at turning such a world into a great story. Probably a top-shelf Dungeon Master, and I like him all right as a writer, but I feel like there are others who are above him on the authorial totem pole (... most of them dead).

I mentioned in a different topic that I stopped reading new comics after my last subscription expired back in 2014, but I still go retro from time to time. And I count manga as a separate hobby.

Big subject of my geekery as of late: Got back into Magic: The Gathering. This might be a mistake, but the wife and I are both playing Commander and having a good time. Getting a play group lined up, too.

That's by Circle Entertainment, a small publisher that does a lot of games on Nintendo systems. I was a big fan of most of their 3DS games (I don't pay much attention to them lately since I don't have a Switch or Wii U), but one thing to note is that they're a Chinese company translating Japanese games into English. As such almost all of their games have some mistranslations or broken English here or there, and a full on visual novel is gonna have a good amount of it.

Circle and I go back a ways. I have a whole folder of their games on my 3DS, going all the way back to Sweet Memories Blackjack in 2011. I agree: Their translations tend to miss the mark, but the games are still playable, and I am getting more forgiving of these things as I get older.

Hell, if I go back my NES, the weird translations are endearing.

Picked up Petit Novel: Harvest December for 3DS. On sale for $5.99 U.S. Hard to believe that 3DS has any VNs at all, especially this late in the life of the system, but there it is.

I keep hearing that Black Clover improves once you get past the early episodes and the asshat protag stops screaming all the time. That can be a big ask for a shounen series, but at least that one has the bonus that it is done and does not run for hundreds (or 1,000+ for One Piece) of episodes.

Had a blast watching Double Or Nothing 2021. Not the best pay-per-view of the AEW catalogue, IMO, because Revolution 2020 is always going to be hard to beat, but still a lot of fun, and it feels great to have crowds back. Several of the wrestlers seemed genuinely taken aback at how over they are, and that warms my heart.

Retro Crush got all three of the NG Knight Lamune series. Considering their list of acquisitions, I am starting to wonder if they are staffed largely by former fansubbers. Not a bad thing if true.

Considering the usual types of people that go hard on social justice, and the types of fans who love yaoi, I'd assume the SJW crowd would actually demand that all anime have mandatory yaoi scenes, not push to get rid of them.

The Yaoi Generation is the generation before the Social Justice era. They share the same all-or-nothing attitude, but Social Justice tends to be anti-sex, especially in the creative spaces of fandom. The two groups are not friendly towards each other.

Rocky Romero is Trent's old tag partner from NJPW. These days, he is also the head booker for NJPW Strong, from what I understand, so a guest appearance from him is kind of a big deal.

Retro Crush picked up Star Fleet, also called X Bomber. A marionette show like Thunderbirds, but more akin to a proper giant robot anime, and made by Go Nagai for that reason. Big part of my childhood, but it has long been hard to find, so this is a big get.

what does this mean

For a long time, anime / manga fandom -- one can argue that it is mainstream, these days, but I respectfully disagree -- did not have to deal with those types of complaints the way that Western media fandoms did, but I have noticed that it is starting to take hold. Japanese content creators generally do not care about this sort of thing, but the distributors, notably Sony, are starting to shift their censorship more towards U.S. norms.

Continuing my journey into LNs. Got a good deal on Volume 1 of In Another World With My Smartphone. Not as long a series as Invaders of the Rokujouma, but it still has a ton of substance at 22 volumes.

Also received my package from Right Stuf today. All caught on the Monster Musume and Trinity Seven manga, plus the only volume of Gundam Ecole du Ciel that I was missing. Unfortunately, EDC has the same issue that many old Tokyopop manga have: The U.S. release was never finished. Still, at $5.99 U.S., still a good deal for being out of print.

TWEWY is 110% Nomura. I have the DS version, but it takes up a space on the shelf, no more.

And seeing fanart for Xenogears reminds me that the game is still up on the PS3 / Vita version of the PSN Store. Might have to pick that up (... despite still have my PS1 release).

I have Raging Loop here, Switch version. Still need to play it.

Highlight for me today is that I managed to get a program working that will run my physical Sega CD games, so I have been diving back into Shining Force CD. Great game.

Had a go at the third Danmachi OAV on Hidive. (The author of the LNs has stated that he is not a fan of any of the OAVs.) Nothing but fan service, as expected, but the creators had the grace to have it center upon secondary characters (e.g. Airmid, Naaza, Daphne, Cassandra, etc.), rather than the main cast.

How Sa Ga Frontier plays depends on the character you pick. The Red (i.e. superhero) route takes a little while to open up, and it does not tell you that you need to grind as Red in order to build up your stats as Alkaiser. I am currently playing the same route, and I have to fight the temptation to advance the plot until I have assembled a good party, good gear, good skills, etc., lest I get rocked by the next boss.

In other news, I started reading the Invaders of the Rokujouma (the spelling varies) light novels. Those are digital exclusives in the U.S. (via Kindle), but there are 38 (!) of them, so there is plenty of content there. I still like the anime, and it makes sense to get into the source material.

One vote for the Emperor from FF2. Considering the limitations of the NES, having a villain who seemingly reacts to your actions instead of sitting in his castle and waiting for you is a big thing. The dude kills your allies, blows up towns friendly to you, sets traps for you, and generally makes a right dick of himself. Dissidia then doubles down on this by having him be one of the biggest bads.

As it is, this game is easily the most involving title I have played since 2019. I cannot pick up anything else until I solve this mystery.
