From playing the game. It didnt hit me that hard because I was sure the character was just going to come back somehow like previous games seemed to do. When the character didnt, for a while I just thought I missed some side quest.

Yes. While she's probably the weakest character once everything is maxed, she's quite useful and underrated before that, particularly with Haste.

IIRC, back in the old days, older game boards tended to hold onto the top spots. I would guess a game like FF7 probably held onto it, even when FFX was first released. I wasn't here in 2001 though.

Edit: For Skyrim, I would think PS4 Skyrim would have been #1 at that time.

Colony 9 isn't bad. None of these are really bad. Personally, when I first started playing, I was getting used to the mechanics and overall game flow that I wasn't paying much attention to the area itself. Colony 9 as an area was relegated more to the background. It wasn't until Bionis Leg when I was used to things that I really started to enjoy the scenery.

Thinking about it, that's actually pretty good design to have kind of a "normal" area to start when you're not paying as much attention and then save the more breathtaking areas until you're ready for them.

Snowman's land for me personally. I seem to keep falling off climbing the snowman or getting into the igloo. The shell is kind of fun but once it's gone, it's gone.

I kind of like DDD, though the 100 coins are a big problem if you don't know about the couple at the very beginning.I remember getting 97 or so with a friend, which took awhile, and then the only coins we could find were the ones by that death-suction thing, and we ended up dying.

I kind of like Hazy Maze Cave 100 coins too, except for the blue coins, which are easy to miss and come late in the level.

Probably not RPGs in my case. My first RPG was Breath of Fire 2, which has a terrible translation. I was already almost a teen at that point, anyway.

That said, playing Wheel of Fortune on the NES at age 5-6 probably didn't hurt, as well as some other game show based games later on like Hollywood Squares and Jeopardy.

then I saw people elsewhere hoping for a 'farewell' sale for the PS3
Is there evidence they'd do this? I'm not sure it would make a lot of sense from a business perspective. It's already the last chance to buy so that's already going to grab headlines and motivate people to buy. Clearly they want people to buy from PS4/PS5 stores anyway. I'm not even sure if PS3 and PSP have really been included in any recent sales anyway, at least the last times I've checked (someone feel free to correct me if this has happened).

I'd think buying sooner would make more sense, in case some publisher decides to remove a game early for no reason, or if there are technical issues or something. At least for the games where physical copies are really expensive.

Suikoden 1 and 2 are fairly well connected and share several of the same characters. If you plan to play through both, definitely do 1 first. IMO, Suikoden 1 is kind of average as far as RPGs go, though still not too bad and not terribly long too from what I remember. Suikoden 2 is very good.

The other Suikoden games are more loosely connected, and you could moreso play them out of order, though they do have some of the same characters too.

Thanks for this topic. I think I'll go check around later and pick up some of the RPGs I've been on the fence about, especially those that are expensive to get physically.

I did play Arc the Lad 2 awhile ago. The difficulty curve at the end spikes up considerably. There is a way to cheese it using a specific character and specific piece of equipment (which might be missable - don't remember). I did that rather than grinding, though I'm pretty sure the final boss literally took 4 hours or so using this. At least I knew I wasn't in danger of dying as long as I kept to the strategy. It's probably not a popular opinion but I liked Arc the Lad 1 better. It's shorter and more streamlined, though honestly it just seemed more balanced. Arc the Lad 2 was pretty good though, and worth playing for those that link SRPGs. The other downside about it is if you revisit the same room while exploring, you can retrigger some of the same battles, and they can take 10-20 minutes to complete, which can make exploring a little more annoying if you lose your way like I do sometimes.

If anyone has PS2 recommendations, those would be appreciated too.

Congrats for finally beating 8-4! I tried to get there too on the special battle but never made it that far. I ran into trouble with the lakitus on 4-1 and 8-2. I already beat 8-4 through the normal game so it wasn't so much for completion.

My last regular battle I did manage to win and got a pretty good coin total of 3314, though that's only enough for 988th place. I had over 900 coins which is among my highest ever, though I had to burn through a good bit just to stay alive at the end. I guess the special battle coin threshold is lower, which makes some sense since no one can farm 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, and 3-1 for coins.

I remember being underlevelled for the final fight and it was kind of annoying. The sequence was kind of long and was having trouble with a later part, so I kept trying until I got it but I wish I was levelled more. This was in the original Xenoblade on the Wii, so you may be in better shape with the stored experience system if you need it, however that works.

Don't remember the recommended level, though 80 sounds like you'd probably be fine.

Another tip is to save your coins for when you really need them. I've seen some just use them right away. Generally use them either if you're in a tough spot (e.g. bowser, hammer bro, or lakitu on the screen and you can't kill them with fireballs) or when the timer is in red and getting really low. If you save enough coins, you can spam the item roulette in crunch time.

My favorite would probably be the lawyer

I don't remember that sidequest. I checked a guide and it says the second monster is in the Antol Lair. Here's more details: He's hiding in one of the antol pods at the southwest corner of the den. Look for the larger Bonterra Pod. You'll have to get the pod to hatch (use your lure ability) in order to get him out of the pod.

I don't understand this sentence but it sounds badass. Makes me want to try the kick ability on her but I like all her orbs too much!
Here's what this is referring to. Not really a spoiler, but putting it in spoiler tags anyway.
It's basically a move you can use to instant kill some high level monsters that you would normally not be able to kill, at least easily. It takes a VERY specific setup to work, though, where you're knocking them off a high cliff. Outside of that specific setup, the ability isn't particularly noteworthy.

I think if you understand the game mechanics very well, Sharla is not needed as much, since you can find ways around her healing and she does the least damage. If you haven't figured everything out, though or are underlevelled, she helps a lot as her healing is the best. You can put me in the camp of not understanding the mechanics that well, as I used her a good bit and she helped a lot.

It took me a little while to get into Xenoblade on the Wii. I felt overwhelmed by the sidequests at first but decided to just move on with the story and ignore most for awhile. Definitely glad I did that and then later on when I felt more engaged I went back and ended up completing a few at a time. Eventually by the time I finished the game, I did finish all of them.
