generally speaking no, but in VR, the addition of a virtual body really helps a ton with immersion. A lot of VR games end up making you feel like a pair of disembodied hands and a head... Which to their credit is understandable -- since it is extremely tricky to get this right. Even something as simple as simulating the arm becomes hairy quickly, because, unless your arm is extended all the way out (or, unless you use some additional tracking setup beyond just a headset + 2 controllers) the game has no way of knowing where the bend of your elbow is IRL -- and so it has to guess. If that guess isn't accurate, you get a mismatch between your IRL body and your virtual body, which totally fucks with immersion.

Extrapolate that to the rest of the body and its easy to see how complex it can become from a technical perspective. A few games however have done this with a surprising amount of fidelity, and those games benefit significantly from it. VR is all about detail; every little bit adds to the experience.

My family has accounts on Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and Disney+, and I have access to Amazon Prime.

I actually posted a topic a week ago asking for recommendations for something specific... Basically I'm looking for movies about a person or people who become disconnected with/detached from their reality. Maybe they learn or discover that something about their perception of the world is actually artificial or "fake" in some way. And then they go on a journey to discover "the truth" about the world, or whatever it is that lies beyond their previous perception.

Hopefully that's enough to go on. Some examples include The Matrix trilogy/The Animatrix, The Truman Show, Memento, etc. Sci-fi movies tend to touch on this a lot more than other genres (virtual realities being a hot topic), but it doesn't have to be sci-fi.

Yeah, that's a great point too. I never did read A Scanner Darkly (been meaning to), but IIRC the movie does have elements of this... With those weird shape-shifting suits.

Appreciate the other recommendations all, thanks <3 will check out as many of these as I can

Totally just realized that this is totally explained by that classic allegory of the Cave...

Where there's a dude inside a cave watching a fire cast shadows of things, and since the shadows are all he sees, he believes that is reality. But then he discovers that he can see the things themselves. It's like moving up a level in perceiving the "truth" of things

Good evening -- I've got a bit of a specific request, hopefully it's not too niche. Recently I've been craving a particular type of story that I can kind of identify, but I'm not exactly sure how to specify it.

Essentially, what I'm looking for is a story of a reality that is "fake", or an alternate dimension that is "almost real"... Where a character might be motivated by a sense of "dislocation" from reality; some underlying suspicion that the world we perceive isn't what it seems, and that a "truer" reality exists behind/beyond it. And this motivates a character (or characters) to attempt to cross the boundary and "transcend" (or, "reach an enlightened state", or whatever that might mean in the story.)

The most obvious example for this is, of course, in sci-fi, with virtual-reality stories like The Matrix (including The Animatrix short films) or the book Snow Crash. But I've also noticed this in horror, as in Stephen King's writing (for example in the Dark Tower books), as well as in drama films such as The Truman Show. And it is sometimes used to break the fourth wall in interesting ways.

Basically I'm just really interested in how these things are portrayed in different media -- the detachment from reality, exploring the limits of human perceptions, and a character that searches for a "higher truth". Hopefully this is enough info for more? Appreciate any input!

For context I've only ever played Black Mesa (which I did enjoy a lot). I would definitely prefer to play Alyx first, since I'm itching to play a VR game worth its salt; I'm just curious if it's likely to be a better experience to play these two games in release date order, like maybe the plot of Alyx won't make sense without context of playing HL2 first...

Can anyone with experience with this game(s) chime in? Any thoughts appreciated.

If you don't have any other systems for it, or if you just want to be able to play it on the go, the DOOM 2016 port is excellent given the limitations of the system, and is definitely worth your time. Although, if you can get it on another system, that would be preferable; as impressive as the port is, it's still maxed out at 30FPS, and it's a game that definitely benefits from reaching 60FPS.

Definitely agree that it starts slow, but those books definitely get going later on, and they end up making for excellent high fantasy. Personally, I think I enjoyed Sanderson's Mistborn series a bit more, but overall I think you can't go wrong with his work. Stormlight just takes a little time to set up the worldbuilding and stuff. IIRC it's planned to be a pretty long series, like 10 books, so the first one is definitely a primer.

I finished up The Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman over the summer. Excellent books IMO. It does a great job at sidestepping the inevitable Harry Potter comparisons, and although it dips a little far into the "teenage angst" vibe, it makes up for it with some excellent world building and a great cast of characters.

Yo if you like Lo-Fi trip hop stuff, I highly recommend Kaskade's recent album Arkade Destinations Living Room. Kaskade is usually more well known for having several massive EDM hits in the early-mid 2010s, but for this album he got a bunch of trip hop artists to collaborate and the result is really good IMO. Not the most innovative stuff but just a great cross section of what the genre is about

Jon Hopkins - Immunity (2013)

As far as electronic music goes, this is an instant classic, seamlessly blending techno, IDM, ambient, and downtempo. IMO, listening to this album in one sitting with quality headphones is a borderline religious experience. The initial run of songs from We Disappear, through Collider, culminating in the angelic Abandon Window, is just an absolute trip; while you could argue that the second half of the album is weaker, that is strictly in a relative sense compared to those first few tracks.
