Basically its a meeting where a representative of the court sits down with the parties involved (you, your attorney, and then them and their attorney) and explores the middle ground to try and come to a mutual agreement. If an agreement can be made, the mediator formalizes it and sends it to the court. When you have your hearing, the parties will state there is an agreement based on the outcome of the mediation and the judge will issue their orders based on the mediation agreement.

mediation is what a lot of disputes use to avoid the cost and hassle of going to court.
after that comes arbitration, and before that you should have had negotiation.
