None of the poll options quite capture my feelings. I actually wrote up a big ol' review that's still sitting around - didn't post it anywhere, kinda just wrote it as a brain dump. Basically I have very mixed feelings but I really like it as a game.

The story doesn't feel very well thought-out and IMO completely fails at delivering the messages it's trying very ham-fistedly to deliver. The visuals and animations are fucking gorgeous but like, the game's development was powered by crunch, tears and shattered dreams so I guess they damn well better be, lol. Gameplay is an absolute blast, which IMO partially contributes to the game failing to deliver its messages, but failings as a work of art aside it's still a very fun game.

(To clarify, I don't hate the story, either - it's a good enough ride. It's just that they were very obviously trying to be profound with the themes here and fuck up due to apparently not really considering how gameplay and their story are intersecting and even contradicting one another. Basically it's just a disappointment that this game's biggest weakness is somehow the one element that was its predecessor's claim to fame.)

Crafting is great but I'm trying to figure out if the game really wants you to go hard on it or not. Feels like you get nothing but trash from substories and even hidden shops weapon-wise if you've been up on your upgrading. Of course it kind of contributes to the "do it however you want" vibe the game has going on. Ngl I love the idea that you can get godly equipment early through regular Yakuza stuff like playing golf and baseball.

IMO the gameplay gets better with each game in the series, the one exception being the engine jump which puts 6 and Kiwami 2 behind 0 and potentially 5 for me. By Judgment they've got it all figured out and it feels like it's back on top. (Obviously Like a Dragon is its own thing and can't really be compared to any of the other games at all, but it's pretty darn good.)

At this point it's definitely the general lack of care/effort from Gamefreak. I barley get the sense that they even want to make these games anymore beyond the bare minimum. Feels like the games would benefit enormously from being outsourced to a studio that would actually be excited to see what they could do with it.

If you liked Kiwami 2's gameplay then you should feel at home with 6, though it's absolutely a rougher and jankier version of it since it was the debut of the Dragon Engine.
5's gameplay is largely like 4 but with more refinement - still nowhere close to 0 of course but it does have the most heat moves in the series so there's plenty of spectacle to keep you entertained.

The scale of this game is kind of starting to blow my mind. It starts out feeling more along the lines of Judgment (which was great because the small scale was the whole point of that game) but as it goes on it really drops any illusions that this is somehow anything less than a deserving mainline entry.

You were super close to finding the trick on that second phase for Corrupted Monk! From that higher branch, you can see through her illusion and get an instant deathblow from jumping down on her. Funny enough, the first Corrupted Monk was a complete wall for me so by the time I got to Fountainhead, her movements were burned into my brain enough that she went down much more easily.

Thinking on it I think the single most amazing thing to me about PS4 era games vs. PS3 era games is animation. Animation in games became absolute fucking bonkers this last generation with stuff like Death Stranding, MHW, DMC5, RDR2, UC4, TLoU2 and God of War (just to name the really heavy hitters - FF7R seems like it may be in this group too but I haven't played it yet) being light years beyond anything we could have possibly imagined 10 years ago. Granted that's not necessarily a product of the hardware so much as it is adept animators backed by ever more exceptional tools, but this kind of thing by itself is enough to make modern games feel well removed from those of the past in my book.

It's super bizarre but the eight pages of tutorials on shareholder meetings don't actually explain *at all* how you're supposed to win.

Short version is breaking guards is just rock paper scissors and you have to use the right color. After their guard is down you do damage relative to the charisma of the employee you pick. The gauge in the middle is your cost-to-deploy and different employees take different amounts of it. You can restore the gauge and do some damage by using the higher-level apologies.

The actual management feels way more straightforward - I don't have a "winning strategy" picked out for myself yet to make things go super fast but it seems like it's pretty hard to completely bungle it.

This was exciting at first when it was just news of ports for upcoming projects and maybe a surprise localization, but it's starting to feel a bit blargh now that we have a literal spreadsheet showing three years worth of would-be hype as hell announcements. Especially given how the info was acquired it feels especially bad. =/

XCX, Nintendoland and Game & Wario are the big three holdouts that I can think of off the cuff. The latter two are very much built around the tablet so really there's only one big port left that we could expect.

I'm currently in the middle of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and I'm absolutely loving it. Haven't felt so thoroughly absorbed in a JRPG in a while, though maybe that's to be expected since it's also very much a Yakuza game, and a wildly ambitious one at that. (For points of JRPG comparison I should note I haven't played FF7R yet since I'm waiting on the PC release. Seems like something I'd love, though!)

The Wii U had a great little library. Emphasis on little, but the games that were there really packed in the quality - I have no regrets at all about my purchase.

Of course, we're far better off now with (almost!) all of those games being ported elsewhere. I came across my Wii U tablet recently and was kind of taken aback how much it feels like a Fisherprice toy compared to an undocked Switch.

I should note that those were all off the top of my head while limiting myself to releases that are from the last couple of years, are still being supported or have a new game in development.

There are many more even within the last couple of years and if you're willing to go as far back as even 2015 - nevermind including the entire eighth generation - the variety and quantity completely explodes. Gaming has absolutely never been better, and if you feel like you're not getting what you want you just need to look around a bit more. (Even survival horror is in kind of an amazing place if you're willing to dig into ground level indie ventures.)

This is just the nature of progress, innit? Bit of a weird take but I guess it could be compared to VHS enthusiasts who were upset that DVDs outmoded their collections.

Though that doesn't really apply here since PS4 games work on PS5 and in many cases reap the benefits of its superior hardware.

SSD standard is huge and all but even ignoring that there's nothing hasty at all about moving off of last gen's consoles. As someone who regularly plays at 120+ fps I've really lost both my appetite and my patience for games that stick at 30 or fail to even meet that. We were in dire need of a hardware upgrade for consoles and now for the first time in a long while they actually look like very capable machines. (Both PS3 and PS4 were dated tech the day they came out.)

This isn't an issue with gaming any more than it is an issue with movies, anime, TV shows, etc etc as you already pointed out.

The issue is that mainstream channels of discussion chew things up and move on at a rapid pace these days. The art is just as valuable and everlasting as ever, it just seems less so if you care about those shallow consumerist discussion channels. (Which you shouldn't for the sake of your mental health.)

I gave myself a 9 based mostly on passion. I play every genre and also get a huge kick out of studying ludology and thinking deeply on the design, mechanics, history and culture that go into making games what they are. It's one of those things that I think could keep me happy literally forever as long as there were people making games.

I've been playing on PC and it's been an exceptional experience. Apparently this is the first game that they handled the PC version internally and it really shows. I kind of had to do a reality check on launch night that I was playing a brand new Yakuza game with both gameplay and cutscenes running at 144 fps without any ini tweaking.

Iceman hit most of the big stuff. Honestly I could probably forgive how bad the story ends up being if the actual gameplay systems and balance weren't the most poorly constructed in the series past Abyss's "mystic artes do 1 damage lol" scaling on Unknown.

SSD standard will absolutely change how games are made and what is possible, but it's harder to get excited about because the tech is... actually really old, just consoles never deigned to use it.

There's plenty else to be pumped about in terms of modern innovations though with huge pushes in graphics engines, ray tracing and deep/machine learning techniques allowing us to do all of the above for basically no extra performance cost.

Edit: Oh, I missed the entire second page where everyone basically already made all these points. Whoops.

I'm pretty sure the issue with names is that people were injecting code hacks and things through the names.

This was the original problem but after like a month and a half they started saying that they knew how to fix that but that they didn't know what to do about the fact that people were being vulgar with their names in a family friendly game. Which is just like... do the same thing literally every platform does and use a censor list. And ngl it's felt kind of shitty that every win I've ever gotten has been as Fall Guy 3968 or whatever and not as my own name. Makes the contests feel way less personal too since every other bean is just a random number.

I always assumed it was an open world GTA like game.

Yakuza is normally a beat em up flavored lovechild of Shenmue and River City Ransom. This particular game is switching up the genre.
