Maybe some type of healthcare system that covers all Americans, just to make it easier.

I think we are really moving in this direction and we'll get there with one more term of Trump in office. Apparently the health insurance companies were so upset by his "socialist" executive orders that their execs didn't show up for a scheduled meeting with the President. But it's not going to happen without (1) a leader who believes in big government and (2) maximum pressure against the health insurance industry and their lobbyists.

(In other words, if Biden gets in, you can forget about it. Mitch will call it dead on arrival, Nancy will shrug and move on to other issues, Biden will say we fixed healthcare even though we didn't and completely ignore the issue).

Found an article that says they want the standard for liability to be "grossly negligent or caused intentional harm." I guess that adds the word "grossly" to the normal standard.

I don't really like the sound of this as it seems to be endorsing ordinary negligence (something where a reasonable person would think the risk/reward ratio is bad). I mean, if the government is granting businesses immunity for ordinary negligence, maybe the government should pick up the tab for them if people do get sick.

Does anyone know the details of the proposed liability shield? Like is this going to shield any companies, no matter how unsafe their work environments are, or only those that meet certain standards?

Correctly predicting 5 of 6 presidential elections isn't very impressive.

That means out of Clinton/Bush/Bush/Obama/Obama/Trump he only got 5 of those right.

Well, the two Bush elections were pretty hard to predict. But yeah, you can sort of toss out Clinton/Obama/Obama as those were fairly obvious. So then it's 2 out of 3 which is not too impressive.

Never thought we'd see the Republicans push for more time in school while Democrats want kids to stay home.

I feel like Trump should be cautious here - there's going to be a strong lobby from children who don't want to go back to school - they're going to lobby their parents to vote for Biden.

Props to AOC once again by the way. She might be the only person on the left willing to actually stand up to Amazon. Didn't take the bribe of 25,000 jobs or whatever it was they were "offering." Bravo, NYC (and anywhere else) can do better without giving favored status to a company that patented a device to monitor the physical movements of their employees.

(The only person on the right to stand up to Amazon is Donald Trump, but he did it for less altruistic reasons.....just because Jeff Bezos owns a newspaper that criticized him).

The really cowardly thing about liberals is they are so quick to lump in small businesses and their owners with the capitalist system and go after them hard, but all their principles go out the window when it comes to dealing with actual giant corporations like Amazon. Then, it's an endless stream of bootlicking and praising billionaires for donating 1% of their wealth to some cause.

I do think it is slightly disingenuous to frame it as "Bernie supporters" when Bernie himself has pivoted away from stuff like this. Like all power to the delegates but the man himself doesn't really factor into things or deserve any credit for this. As GMUN pointed out, many are still supporting Biden. The only reason to invoke his ghost is to get one last round of complaining about Bernie and the general progressive base.

They are delegates who are pledged to Bernie right? Assuming that's the case, the descriptor is extremely on-point.

Trump the democrat.

From the spokesperson for a pharmaceutical industry group:

The presidents plan to import policies from socialized health care systems abroad is disrupting our work [on Covid-19 therapies] and diverting our focus away from those life-saving efforts," the spokesperson said. "We remain willing to discuss ways to lower costs for patients at the pharmacy counter. However, we remain steadfastly opposed to policies that would allow foreign governments to set prices for medicines in the United States."

It's not a Democratic policy. Joe Biden would never support it. It's a socialist policy. Directly piggybacking off the work of countries with socialized healthcare. Thank you President Trump for doing more for the working class in 4 years than the Democratic Party has done since 1980.

On my pre-wage increase last year rate? My post-wagw increase rate? My post wage increase this year rate? My highest quarter? My 2019 income divided by 52? Like? Lol. I don't get it.

In some of these scenarios it will be like $900 to get me to 70% wage replacement.

So you're getting a raise. Given how much money we've printed since March, I think that's fair.

On Josh Hawley, I'm curious about what he means by "on the record." If he means in a published opinion they wrote as a judge, that's going to be hard because no judge in any court other than the US Supreme Court is going to call a US Supreme Court decision "wrongly-decided" in a published opinion. They may think it was wrong, but they lack the power to overrule it.

I can easily imagine it. I've seen millionaires receiving welfare health insurance in California, and legally too. You just need an income below $17k or so. It doesn't matter how much you have in assets or how fast your assets are growing in value as long as you don't show a realized income.

The Democrats can't be framed for this. They passed their bill 2 months ago. But if they just extend the $600 until such time as the % idea can be feasibly implemented I think that would be fine.

I love Trump's attacks on the "middlemen." And middlewomen. No one even knows who they are but they are making a lot of money, like a very massive amount of money, even more than the pharmaceutical companies. Some of the middlemen are very rich and may know Trump and talk to him at Palm Beach, but they're not going to be so rich anymore now that the drug prices are going down.

Yeah, you can't compare the testing numbers NY and Europe were producing in March to the numbers out of Florida and Texas now. The testing is much better now. Actual cases in China, NY, and Europe was probably at least 10x confirmed cases. Actual cases is still going to be much higher than confirmed cases now, but the multiple is lower.

The way this disease works there is a 1-2 week delay between infection and when the case would be identified, and there's an enormous spike in COVID cases that looks like it starts roughly ~2 weeks after George Floyd's death. It's hard, if not impossible, to separate the effect of protests from the effect of states reopening, but the data is certainly consistent with the hypothesis that the protests drove a spike in cases.

The correlation is pretty obvious. States were reopening for weeks earlier without much of an effect.

How do you think the house is going to be anything other than a bloodbath

Every member is up for reelection, and the GOP has won 4 of the last 5 House elections. With the current districts, the GOP has won 3 out of 4. The GOP has won the House while losing both the Presidency and losing seats in the Senate with the current districts. I think GOP to win the House is probably more likely than Trump winning reelection. Trump winning reelection probably means a GOP sweep (possibly while getting swept with the popular vote).

Remember, these districts are still the ones created after the GOP won a lot of state legislatures in 2010 - they represent the state of the art in gerrymandering. Now the nature of gerrymandering is that in a wave election against you, you tend to do very badly. But in a close election you win.

Is it weird that I'm less worried about Biden/Trump than I am about Congress? I'm fairly confident that Biden will win the election, but I expect the results to be a lot closer than the recent polls have been. If results in the Senate/House elections follow similar trends, we could see a clear Biden win coupled with Republicans holding the Senate and taking control of the House. If that happens, the best case scenario is Congress refusing to do anything to do anything the Democrats want for Biden's entire term. Less optimistically, Congress could simply refuse to certify the Electoral College results, then elect Trump as Speaker of the House and have him serve as "acting president" after his current term expires.

That would be on the order of the Queen walking into Parliament and announcing that she is dissolving them immediately and ruling from the throne.

BTW the impetus of this topic was a post on some other board about an article that argued that "mechanical time" was a white/European thing. That got some backlash, but it's actually true - our common method of measuring time using time zones and mean solar time is not particularly natural and is trying to make objective (same for all people) what in reality is subjective (different for each person based on their location).

Should we abolish civil time and go back to using true solar time?

Until a couple hundred years ago, people generally used true solar time. That is, the time at which the sun is highest in the sky on a day is defined as noon.

True solar time does not exactly conform to time as measured by a clock - at different times of the year, clocks will run slower or faster than the sun's motion across the sky. As clocks got better (and especially with sailing, for which mechanical clocks used to be essential in calculating longitude) people got to relying on their clocks. And thus we got mean solar time - we set clocks for a location based on the weighted average of true solar time across a year.

With the development of railroads and the decline of using clocks to calculate longitude at sea, we made a decision to construct standard time zones - so that the time in Boston and New York, for instance, would be the same rather than Boston being a few minutes ahead. But of course the result is that we are even further off of true solar time.

Should we go back to using true solar time? Vote away!

The current Presidential salary of $400,000 per year is very low given the importance of the office. Should the President's salary be increased to $200 billion per year, funded by a 1% income tax on all citizens?
