A bubble could certainly hit at any time. Just have to be sure you dont have more in than you can afford to lose.

Depending on your risk tolerance;

YOLO = ZOM, YOLO, SNDL

Long term good companies (depending on if you can do fractional shares) = AAPL, FB, MSFT

Stable dividends paying companies that will probably be ok long term but will not rocket: VZ, T

Not an all encompassing recommendation or endorsement here, just a few options.

yea sorry im being a negative nancy but youve got the right mindset

Good luck, id be curious to hear your strategy as you go. Im too risk averse to really do any fun investing myselr, but it is super fascinating
No worries at all. Being negative is actually the correct mindset to have going into this, as you want to prepare for the worst (losing all the money) and not really worry about the best. If you come in with a positive mindset, hoping for the best, thats just setting yourself up to get crushed and turned off from options going forward.

I can say from experience in losing, that I far, far regret the times I sold too early than I regret the money Ive lost. This even applies to pre-pandemic. Ive always been long on ROKU and LVGO, and had started playing abound with options in them. LVGO doesnt exist anymore since they merged with TDOC, but look up their history. I sold a call pre-pandemic for 3x what I paid for it thinking that was great. If Id have held on through the pandemic, it got up to 30x what I paid for it.

Other than rule #1 - always assume you can and will lose 100% of the investment. Rule #2 for me would be only to buy in a company or ETF that you understand and believe in, to the point where if you HAD to own 100 shares of it in the future, you would be happy with that. Of course its only an option, so you most definitely dont ever need to exercise the option, but feeling that strongly about a company is the sure way to help you ride it through.

That said, the goal here is to try to remove as much emotion out of the equation as you possibly can, since emotion is ultimately the one thing that will fuck you up in the event you pay too much, or sell too early.

I stick with 1yr+ call buys as my primary strategy. Nothing more complex than that.

To help address emotion, I try to do this in any serious long-term play:
  • Buy 3 of whatever call it is you are serious about.
  • Set a good-til-cancelled limit sell for 1 of the calls at triple the price you paid for it. Leave it out there indefinitely and do not touch it. If you lose all your money, you should have assumed that going into the position. Sucks, but you should have been mentally and financially prepared for it. If, on the other hand, the markets are in your favor and you made a good call, one day youll get surprised with a sale and will have recovered your initial investment. Now you have 2 calls left out there essentially paid for and risk-free. They could become worthless at this point, but at least you got your initial investment back.
  • For #2, set another good-til-cancelled limit sell for some multiple. When first starting out, maybe just do 2x. Youll get another sale if the market favors you and will have made some money in addition to getting your original investment back. When you get really into it and try out more positions after getting a few successes, feel free to bump up the multiple higher. 5-10x, 20-30x, whatever. Setting that multiple is really the only emotional decision you should have to make in the process. Whatever you do though, try to stick with the limit sell from that initial multiple and avoid temptation to change it. If the limit sell is cancelled (on RH I know they expire after 90 days) for whatever reason, you can re-evaluate the multiple at that time if you want and reestablish a new GTC limit sell
  • If you sold #2, hold onto #3 indefinitely. Never sell it. If you ride it out to expiration, choose at that time if you have the cash for 100 shares when you exercise, or sell the call just on or prior to that date.

I have done a similar strategy with 2 calls and selling the first when it doubles, but then I screw up on selling #2 too early. So although the triple method is riskier, it really helps with the FOMO of selling #2 too early.

Please dont use returns over the past year as an argument to get into options trading

It was a massive bull market, it would have been hard to lose money
I agree with you 100%, actually. Youre absolutely right, and I dont take for granted the fact that the market conditions over the past year are the main reason why I have experienced the returns that I have.

That said, I just present the numbers as they are since thats where Im at now.

Anyone getting into this has to always assume that the potential for loss is 100% of what they put in. I cant stress that enough. But if you keep that initial investment low (I tell folks to just start with $25-$50 tops until they get comfort over it) and dont go dumping your life savings into it, it certainly is possible to make a decent return from a relatively small amount of money. Its by no means guaranteed money, but there is potential.

Long term option plays are one of the safer ways to do it. Like 6+ months until expiration date.
This for sure. Ive been doing options seriously for the past year or so. I stick with 1+ year plus when absolutely possible.

To show just how possible it is to make decent returns as a normal retail investor, here are a couple screenshots of one bucket of my portfolio - total % gains first, $ gains second.

This absolutely isnt a get rich quick story as Ive been sitting on most of these for at least several months. I go in with a low initial investment (whatever I can afford to lose), and assume Ill lose it all. Then when one day comes and it shoots up, Im pleasantly surprised.

The SNAP call is obviously the one Im happiest with. Turned $60 into nearly $3k.
