#15. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES, 1990)

And there we have it, the best mainline Mario game. Super Mario Bros 3 was the first game I ever bought with my own money. Dog sat for one of my aunts at age 4. You know those fake jobs parents give to teach responsibility. Anyway I wanted Mario 3 and got it and have loved it ever since. No idea how many times I have beaten this game and own it like 7 times in remakes and collections. The controls are insanely responsive and crisp even 30 years later. The variety of worlds is awesome, part of the reason I love Mario 3D World too. The addition of the Tanooki power up was so cool too. Angry Sun is a total jerk and needs to be in a GameFAQs contest. The game can be challenging enough, or insanely easy (Hello warp whistles and P Wings).

#16. Final Fantasy IX (PS1, 2000)

Another top 5 OST all time. This game is gorgeous, ignore how bad these sprites look now. In 2000 they were so colorful and fun. The story in 9 is one of the best in the entire series. I love the cast too. Yes Quina, Eiko and Amarant suck, but Zidane, Steiner, Vivi, Garnet and Freya are awesome. There are some of the coolest visuals in the series too. The summons getting cutscenes was so cool and really showed how powerful they can be. Chocobo Hot and Cold is an amazing minigame and Tetra Master is way better than Triple Triad. Garnet is one of my 5 favorite FF characters all time.

#17. Kirby Superstar Ultra (DS, 2008)

I would rather this was on a console like Superstar was originally, but my god this is one rare case where a handheld version is better. They added a ton of content to an already all time game for me. My favorite Kirby game. The amount of expansion and flavor they added to Kirby abilities in this game. Gave him and others around him way more character than they had seen before. Also 8 games in one was so cool in 1996. The DS version is like ... 10 games in one or something. The True Arena is a god damn nightmare. The multiplayer also works very well for a 2008 DS game, me and a buddy wrecked Marx. This game has beautiful colorful visuals and a great set of songs. It also is insanely responsive to your button inputs. I wish they would port the DS version to consoles so I can enjoy it on the big screen. The original on SNES is also one of the only games I ever played with my brother. We never really have been all that close, we get along but did our own things as kids, but for some reason we rented this a ton and played it together.

#18. Final Fantasy 7 Remake (PS4, 2020)

If this was the whole game, and not just Midgar, I am fairly certain we are looking at a top 3 game all time for me. I had major concerns about one of my all time favorite games (yes that is spoilers for later) being remade. Square misses the mark a lot these days. They hit on every single possible mark here. Honestly had the original never existed and this game gone how it does I would have been fine with it, but I know there is more coming so I can't help but hold that against it. In 30 years when the trilogy or quadrilogy or whatever is done we can make these lists again and I can cheat and put them as 1 entry.

Anyway, this game is gorgeous, like the best looking game I have ever played. The OST is an outstanding tribute to the original while also having new stuff. The level of love and care they show to the original game can be felt in every single second of this game. You can tell they didn't want to fuck this up. I didn't like some of the creative liberties they took initially but as I progressed I fell in love with FF7 all over again. I am beyond hyped to see what they do next. I also am completely in love with Tifa and Aeris. They are so gosh darn perfect in this remake. Also Jessie, man that thirsty girl. This game made me feel like a lonely nerdy teen again all horny for the video game ladies. The combat is so smooth and deep. Hard mode teaches you so many tricks and cool exploits. Elemental Materia I love you.

There is exactly 1 bad thing in this game. Roche. (I am not ready to judge on the spoilery stuff without seeing where it goes, perhaps FF7R2 makes it bad)

I cried, full on cried during the intro when the music hits its peak and the logo crashes in. I still tear up each time I see it.

God everything in this game is just so perfect I want to rank it higher than 18th, but I need the rest of the remake for that.

Oh also that scene in Shinra tower with the holodeck omg so good

#19. Chrono Cross (PS1, 2000)

The most hyped I have ever been for a game. A buddy and I watched the intro like 500 times at least on a PS Demo Disc. I beat this game the first weekend basically not sleeping. Beat it 3 more times in the coming 2 weeks to get all the characters and everything in the game and the real ending. The game has some real problems, like the combat is a really bizarre choice that takes some getting used to, and there are some characters that just don't need to exist and have garbage designs. Besides that though, we have one of the best OSTs of all time. A game that is completely gorgeous and a great story. A lot of people write this off too quick as not being a proper CT sequel. There is so much to enjoy here.

#20. Super Mario 3D World (Wii U, 2013)

Oh hey and this comes out this week too on Switch. With online. And a new mode. So in a week this will be Mario 3D World Deluxe in this position. What an absolute joy to play. It builds so much on the excellence of 3D Land and captures that Mario 2D feel in 3D even better. This game also made Captain Toad playable for the first time and god did I fall in love with that little guy. Being able to play as a bunch of characters like in Mario 2 is also an excellent idea. There is more than enough challenge in this game and tons to collect too. The Mario Kart stage is so damn good. I really hope lots of you pick this up so I can play this 4 player online with competent players. The Bell Hill theme is excellent and continues Nintendo's tradition of locking the bass player in a separate room with no sheet music or any idea what they are even doing then just adding it to the song.

#21. Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (Android, 2014)

I have played this game every day for 7 years. It is probably my second most played game of all time at this point in terms of actual time played. The main part I love about this game is unlike other phone games or gacha games, its not pay to win. You could play this never spending a dime and be perfectly fine to beat all the content. May take awhile, but you will get there. They give lots of free Mythril to buy draws. The gameplay is old school FF on steroids. You get all sorts of crazy abilities and can use basically every character in FF history short of a few (Where is Caius?). My team of choice is Bartz, Sephiroth, Aeris, Onion Knight and Orlandu. There was a multiplayer mode that didn't really work well and they just killed it.

#22. Ken Griffey Jr presents Major League Baseball (SNES, 1994)

The greatest sports game ever made. I would first like to acknowledge how good the Game Boy port of this is, and that it has actual players. Both games feature real stats. As well I need to mention Ken Griffey Slugfest for N64 and Game Boy Color, both of which would also be on my list if I had decided to include 4 Ken Griffey games. Really all 4 are excellent and I cannot recommend them enough. Stay away from Winning Run though. This game is very cartoony, and based on the 1993 season so the Blue Jays are stacked. Each team has fake names in place of the real ones due to licensing issues they didn't resolve til the game boy version and beyond. They are based on famous actors, or musicians or teams from other sports. You of course can also edit the names to match the actual players. Hello Joe Carter. Some examples:

The New York Mets are based on punk rock pioneers from New York City including Johnny Thunders filling in for first baseman Eddie Murray, Joey Ramone standing in for second baseman Jeff Kent, Tom Verlaine for outfielder Bobby Bonilla, and Jerry Nolan for pitcher Anthony Young.

The Kansas City Royals are based on U.S. presidentsD. Ike, whose real-life counterpart is DH Hall of Famer George Brett, L. Johnson stands in for infielder Rico Rossy, The pitching staff includes Bill Clinton standing in for Kevin Appier, George H. W. Bush standing in for David Cone, and Ronald Reagan standing in for Hiplito Pichardo.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are named after characters from the soap opera Coronation Street; such example E. Bishop who fills in for pitcher Steve Cooke, K. Barlow is infielder Tom Foley and P. Pearce is outfielder Lonnie Smith.

The Boston Red Sox contain members from the show Cheers. Cliff Claven stands in for Scott Bankhead, Norm Peterson standing in for pitcher Greg Harris, and Sam Malone standing in for closer Jeff Russell are all present. Also included are Boston landmarks B. Common standing in for Luis Rivera, M. Harvard filling in for catcher Tony Pea and figures from early American history J. Adams who fills in for outfielder Billy Hatcher, J. Hancock stands in for Rob Deer, A. Hamilton for infielder Scott Fletcher & S. Heat stands in for flamethrower Roger Clemens.

You also get silly headlines in the boxscore after the game which is presented as a newspaper. Stuff like "Rockies sign fan after catching foul ball"

Gameplay is very basic and that adds to the fun, you can exploit the CPU very badly.

#23. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch, 2017)

Mario Kart 8 is a masterpiece and Deluxe just improves on that. You could place either here. Easily the best game in the series, but not my favorite. It controls so smoothly, the stages are varied and there are lots of them. And while others ignore that Mario Kart Wii had a fully functional online that worked great, this game really did perfect that, allowing for more friends to be grouped etc. This is also yet another case of I am elite at the game until I play with B8. In MKWii I was a 9999 rating guy that was always 1 or 2 with my friend. In 8 same, I am always winning when I play random players, but then I get into a group with B8 and Ermine and Grand Kirby dunk on my soul so hard I am relegated to the misery of finding joy in finishing 3rd or 4th with Icon or MSG or Wigs or SHINE. And on the odd occasion you do beat Ermine... be ready for it.

#24. Pokemon RBY (Blue) (Game Boy, 1998)

There was this kid at school who was somehow way ahead of the trend on Pokemon. He had the game and was saying how amazing it was. No one really paid attention. For some reason he let me borrow it and said it was fine to delete his save for a weekend. That little piece of crap started a nearly 20 year curse on me that I wouldn't escape until fairly recently, though I still purchased Sword so maybe I am not out... actually I just pre-ordered Snap.... OH GOD! Anyway that weekend I chose Charmander and got 4 or 5 gyms in. I was hooked, begged my parents to buy me the game and got Pokemon Blue, picked Squirtle and the rest is history. This game has a ton of issues. I would even say its honestly not very good in many regards, but the charm and excellent designs of many Gen 1 Pokemon just suck you in. The catch em all thing is brilliant. I did complete my PokeDex in this eventually. I also ended up with Red and Yellow too, the only generation I had all versions.

#25. Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness (PS3, 2013)

Take the glory of the original Disgaea cast, put the new Disgaea mechanics with them and add in a new story. Perfection. While the series has some excellent characters, nothing compares to the glory of Laharl, Etna and Flonne. This game is the usual absurd silliness. The gameplay is very smooth. This sequel is a must play for anyone that loved the original. Flonne really shines in this game.

#26. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch, 2017)

This game just captures the feeling of pure joy you get playing a game as a kid. It is fun and doesn't throw too much or too little at you. It can be as difficult or easy as you want it to be. I don't really have a lot to say about Odyssey. It is a perfect game. The first one on my list I would qualify a 10/10.

#27. Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1, 1998)

When I first rented this, I hated it and dropped it quick. A few years later for some reason I came back to it and loved it. The story is fantastic and the jobs, skills, combination of them and so on make for such a deep and rich experience. You can play this game a million ways and none of them are wrong. The game does suffer from the Disgaea series being much better. FFT is very slow compared to Disgaea. Did not like Tactics Advance at all or Advance 2.

The PSP port is really good too. Again it's a tad too slow for me these days, but I can still appreciate what it is.
