It literally did everything its predecessor did but better.

Gen 1 just had great pacing that I don't think was matched by Gen II or any other Pokemon game to date. Started out linear, but once you got a few badges the map opened up in a way that you could explore, catch pokemon, win badges, and fight Team Rocket in almost any order you wanted. The game didn't bog you down with tutorials and handholding but was simple enough you could pick up and learn on your own or talk to NPCs early game and learn tricks

Gen 2 is better then Gen 6 anyway. Gen 2 may be short if you ignore Kanto like I do, but at least it isnt a bloated mess with uninteresting characters and the easiest elite 4 and champion in the series. So glad Sun/Moon brought things back to form.

I thought X&Y had some potential but just felt unfinished and upolished, kind of how Diamond & Pearl felt in comparison to Platinum. For some reason Kalos ended up being the only region not to be revisited
