What would have even been the family sitcom of the 90's? All I can think of is Full House and Home Improvement and I feel like the aesthetic of Full House was already basically covered by the previous episode (and it started in the 80's anyway).

312 - Spider-Man: Far From Home
313 - Doctor Strange
335 - Iron Man
392 - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

I could see GotG 2 getting a bottom 3 placement though - so maybe Doctor Strange or IM1? Maybe I'm underrating IM1, I have no idea.

I want to quote NFUN's post but it won't let me lol

I feel like we're talking past each other - I accept that DK -> "SM64 main theme" -> BBB doesn't mean that BBB was written directly off of DK, but it would mean that BBB was written with that motif ultimately in mind, and I just - I don't know, I'd have to think about other examples of that kind of two-step reference happening. A one-time quoting of DK in the context I was talking about is one thing, but the idea of half of SM64's soundtrack being ultimately built on that motif just feels a little strange to me. It might very well be, it's just kind of unusual!

It is entirely possible that he didn't intend to use DK's theme as the main theme for SM64.
It is entirely possible he started writing and figured out what he was doing later.

It is much much more likely it was intentional.

What I said was douchey and I apologize.
Apology accepted, I apologize for yelling at you too and escalating, I didn't need to.

I agree that the usage of the DK melody is a strong possibility and that it has thematic strength. I just have a lot more uncertainty about the obviousness of that being Kondo's process - it isn't that difficult to end up with something that sounds like the 25M theme.

I'm actually in the process right now of trying to comb through interviews with Koji Kondo to see if they offer any insight but I haven't come up with too much that really pertains to this yet.

Let's try again: Bob-omb Battlefield is likely a reference to SM64's main theme. SM64's main theme is likely a reference to Donkey Kong. Bob-omb Battlefield in no way has to have anything directly to do with Donkey Kong which is the coincidence you were objecting to before. This scenario is extremely plausible
And I'll just say what I said again but differently: What is "SM64's main theme?" Do you know that Bob-omb Battlefield references the motif of SM64's opening, and not the other way around? How can you be certain of what process Koji Kondo used?

he's right. what you're saying makes no sense. Bob-omb Battlefield a reference to SM64's main theme. SM64's main theme is a reference to Donkey Kong. Bob-omb Battlefield isn't a reference to Donkey Kong. This is all intuitive and non-contradictory
Alright well here's a fucking composer's point of view for you: until someone pulls up an interview from Kondo about the process of making Super Mario 64's music, we don't actually have any idea what the process of writing "SM64's main theme" was, and in which order he wrote these pieces. It's entirely possible the first thing he wrote ended up becoming what's now Bob-omb Battlefield, and that it just had a coincidental sequence of E G A G C in it, which is not exactly a spectacularly unique arrangement of notes, nor is it even exactly the Donkey Kong motif (which starts with C).

Yeah, but to be fair, it also sounds like parts in Bob-omb Battlefield, which doesn't really have that thematic reasoning.

It could be either way.
Yeah, that was my counter-argument to my own argument - that it's simply the Bob-omb Battlefield motif which the game uses a lot (which is also the Cool Cool Mountain and Princess's Secret Slide motif, a more obvious motif usage that people sometimes miss), following the usage of the Princess's Castle theme. It really could be either one, and I do think the latter is PROBABLY more likely - it seems more cohesive with the way music in this game is generally used.

oh yeah, i agree. if it IS an "easter egg," it's probably more like an inside joke than something kondo expected many people to notice.
I don't know - like I argued earlier, there is actually a very significant thematic reason why you would use the Donkey Kong motif in this specific place, so it is possible that it was more than an easter egg, and that it really was meant to evoke a dramatic transition from 1981 to 1996, and that it just ended up being too subtle and we were all too dumb to catch it.

The world of business decisions can be a wonky one compared to reality, so I can totally buy someone in some meeting discussed ways to pay homage to the classic games, with this being the result. Sample a little ditty, jazz it up a bit, and here we are.

Could equally be the sound guy's own decisions to use the sound library as inspiration. Could equally be a happy coincidence.

Regardless of how it occurred, it is pretty neat that the connection can be made.
I think this would 100% just be the composer's personal decision to have a little fun, there's no way something this granular came from the top. In most cases composers kind of work in their own bubble, there might have been some direction from the director to use familiar Mario themes but that's about it I think.

I'm honestly a little surprised that so many people have Cap 1 highish! Maybe it's because I personally have no personal attachment to the Steve Rogers character and his portrayal - I mean, I do like what this movie did with him a lot, but that goes for most of the characters in the MCU. Some of the period stuff is cute. The third act of this movie is the worst of any of the movies imo though, including Thor 2.

One other argument I would give against this being the Donkey Kong motif - you could also make the argument that this is actually SM64's stage motif, not DK - compare the part we're comparing to DK to the Bob-omb Battlefield line. Of course, this could also be an argument for! But since it follows a little stinger of the castle theme, I feel like this is sort of a more likely connection.

The only other time the game evokes an earlier Mario theme that I can think of is Hazy Maze Cave's repurposing of both the underground theme from SMB1 and the airship theme from SMB3, but these have more obvious thematic connections and are a lot less ambiguously used.

Well, it's possible to use motifs in clever ways, and Koji Kondo is known for doing that quite a bit - there's quite a bit of it within SM64 itself. So it's possible this was a very sly nod. The context here could make some sense for it, too - a musical motif that's meant to remind us of Mario's earliest days as we do a dramatic sweep in to see how far he's come now that we're in full 3-D! (A terrible reminder that there were only 15 years between Donkey Kong and Super Mario 64, but 25 years between SM64 and today) But it isn't a remarkably unique melodic sequence, and it doesn't particularly remind even an astute listener of Donkey Kong right away, so like I said, it's borderline. I think it's possible Kondo had intentions there, and it's possible he did not.

I've been watching one episode a week (as in, I watched ep 2 a week after ep 1, so I was always a week behind) but I decided to catch up after all the murmurings of the cameo because that would definitely be something that I would've gotten spoiled on at some point. As interesting as X-Men Quicksilver is, part of me is disappointed it's not the actual actor, but I guess that wouldn't kick things up as much as Xquick will do.

Also I don't know if this is a common theory but Monica is totally not Monica, she's a Skrull, that's why her scans were blank and she didn't want to talk about Captain Marvel.

I feel like Captain Marvel is just a sore subject for Monica because her mom died and she wasn't there to help but maybe there's some other tension we don't know about, I dunno why a Skrull would have that reaction in particular though, if anything they'd be less likely to? They stay really in-character but don't always know deeper secrets so they'd probably assume Monica was fine talking about Captain Marvel

Amusingly enough, the party scene is probably one of the only times I had fun in AoU, and I thought its action scenes are probably the worst and most boring in the entire MCU! But, different strokes, I'm happy if someone can find treasure in my trash honestly.

I do actually sorta like Ultron though, since I think they did a good job at making him not a totally cliche robot character - my main problems with him stem from the fact that he seems weirdly not all that threatening and his origin is basically just from Tony Stark being an idiot which makes the stakes seem strangely low.

424 - Ant-Man and the Wasp
471 - Iron Man 3
497 - Ant-Man
513 - Captain America: The First Avenger
533 - Captain Marvel
533 - Avengers: Age of Ultron
569 - Thor
593 - Iron Man 2
653 - Thor: The Dark World
669 - The Incredible Hulk

I was a perfect 6 for 6 up until now if you give me credit for having Marvel and Ultron swapped in the TB, but the next one's not Cap 1 so I'm going to finally have a miss. But it's one of the next three that I put above it, so didn't miss by much probably. People keep guessing Ant-Man and the Wasp so maybe I'm wrong about it being above Ant-Man, I dunno! I still feel like the original will go out first.

Age of Ultron would give me a 6 for 6 on predictions so far (I have Captain Marvel above it in the tiebreakers but whatever, close enough) so I'll guess that! It could be right, since we haven't lost an Avengers movie yet.

I don't really think it's gonna be Ant-Man either (and certainly not Ant-Man and the Wasp) so probably either AoU or Cap 1 imo
