And were you also console gamers?

I think I got the shareware of Doom 1 in like 1995, which was only a few months after it came out on Mac (I didn't have a Windows PC until 2000), and I was still playing Final Doom regularly in 1997. And I was definitely a console kid, because like I said I had a Mac and you try being a PC gamer in the 90s with that.

Taito's arcade library is pretty well regarded as I recall, but they were very prolific so I'm sure there's a fair amount of stinkers too, which I'm sure is what he'll focus on. And I have no idea as to the quality of that collection, if it's well-made or completely sloppy.

I pre-ordered N64, 3DS, Xbox One, and Switch. I bought GBA very early but I don't remember for sure if it was Day One or just sometime in Week One. If we count hardware revisions, I also picked up DS Lite, 3DS XL, and New 3DS XL on launch, and I pre-ordered the Pokemon Sword & Shield Switch Lite for my kid, though I didn't give it to him until Xmas.

Huh, Xbox One really stands out among all those Nintendo consoles, doesn't it. What can I say, I needed Killer Instinct.

EDIT: I guess if we count Kickstarter, I also pre-ordered Ouya, Arduboy, and something called GCW-Zero. And in terms of retro clones, I pre-ordered the RetroUSB AVS, and the Analogue Super Nt and Mega Sg.

I mean I know WHY I skipped it. My second child was born in that week between the launch of the PS4 and the launch of the Xbox One. Both my kids ended up being pretty high-maintenance, and as the stay-at-home mom, I was simply too busy dealing with children to really get in a lot of game time. Especially because as they got a little bit older, anytime I did try to play on the TV, they were all over me and I couldn't get any peace. Mobile/handheld gaming was just easier to keep to myself.

It's weird, I had both consoles, at least until my Xbox died in 2019 and I never replaced it. And I feel like I have *most* of the big games? I just... hardly played them?

I looked at my play history and with just a small handful of exceptions, most of what I played seems to fall into 5 categories:

1. Fighting games
2. Tomb Raider reboot series
3. PS3/360-era remasters
4. Indie stuff that could've been on previous gen
5. Retro collections

I guess I mostly just stuck to 3DS/Switch, but I didn't realize I had done it to such an extent.

So... what'd I miss?

Like PS3 was fine I guess, but I much preferred 360, Wii, and DS in that time period.

I liked PS4 better as a console, but I also feel like I just kinda... missed it? I spent the vast (vast vast VAST) majority of my time in this era playing 3DS/Switch and I just... can't think of anything huge and era-defining that I played on it? I guess there's a hell of a backlog waiting for me!

About 3 years ago I cut it into a mohawk and dyed it purple. Since then I've only gotten it cut twice, once to cut off the purple so it was all about the same length, and then about 6 months later a trim to make it slightly styled and not completely uniform in length all over. So for over 2 years I haven't gotten it cut at all. I would like to get a trim, to remove the damaged ends and maybe slightly style it in a more femme look. Just before the pandemic I found a really good salon that was recommended as trans-friendly but I wasn't able to get in before they closed down, temporarily at first but it's become a permanent closure, so I'm back to trying to figure out where I can go. I suppose I can at least trim the ends myself, if not style it, but honestly it's been looking pretty good lately so maybe I'll wait a bit longer.

The closest that springs to mind is Bloodrayne Betrayal, which is decent, but... not quite right.

Basically, a whole game that feels like the segments of NieR Automata where the camera locks to the side and restricts you to a 2D plane.

I feel like this is similar to a style of game I want more of, except I describe it as Marvel vs Capcom style combat. Like give me a Magnetovania and I'm there.

Xuxon posted...
There's so many problems I have with controllers in general it's difficult to choose. But I gotta go with 3DS. They somehow managed to make an even worse analog stick than the N64, and it doesn't even have a good d-pad to make up for it. As much as I dislike Wiimote motion controls in some instances, it's an addition on top that doesn't have to be utilized. And is sometimes used decently.

Yeah I feel like the Wii remote worked best when it was used as a pointer, and not so much when it was used for motion tracking. The sweet spot for me was games that used the remote only. Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Sonic Colors, Other M (for all the flaws that game had the controls worked out for me), Punch-Out, that stuff was what I was after. Games that required a nunchuck, especially ones that probably could have worked without it, were kind of an annoyance.

3DS's circle pad never really bothered me too much, but the right analog nub on the New 3DS was just... not it. Thankfully not too many games (at least that I played) used it much. The bigger issue I had was the buttons, specifically how close to the edge the A button was. It was a bigger problem on the regular DS, but games that made extensive use of the A button just cramped my hand so bad. Like I loved Mario Kart DS but putting the gas on A killed me. I don't think 3DS really improved on the design as much as developers recognized the issue and made more thoughtful control schemes, so I still consider it a flaw in the design.

I really don't get the dislike for the N64 controller. Other than the fact that it just seemed a bit strange and the joystick wasn't the best, it's not a bad controller. I was also never confused as to how to use it.
I was never confused about how to hold it, I just got annoyed with how basically nothing used the dpad section so you always had your hands cramped together on the analog + button sections. Maybe it was just Nintendo not expecting the stick to be as important as it ended up, but it just irked me that there was this whole side that was essentially worthless.

I also didn't really care for the C buttons, I would've preferred a 3x2 layout of 6 equal-sized buttons like the 6-button Sega pads. And on the rare occasions you used it, the dpad was not great.

TopicHas your sexual orientation evolved during your lifetime?
MrGreenonion
07/21/20 12:56:19 PM

I dunno, it's complicated. I used to identify as very straight but since coming out as trans that's turned into very gay, and I do feel really good about identifying as gay, but I don't think I can say I'm exclusively gay. I'm very down with trans guys and most non-binary folks. I still have a pretty strong distaste for cis guys, but with maybe one or two exceptions.

But mostly I'm not sure I fit the typical attraction model. Like there's people I find attractive, and would jerk off to porn of, but I probably wouldn't want to actually have sex with them? Meanwhile there's people I wouldn't be interested in porn of that I would feel good about having sex with? Also what kind of sex I want is more focused on my partner's pleasure than my own.

I think the niche that best describes my sexuality is demisexual, which is when you don't feel physical attraction to someone until emotional bonds are formed. Or maybe semsexual, which I believe is when you feel sexual attraction but no desire to act on it? Somewhere in that area, which I guess is part of the asexual spectrum, although identifying as ace doesn't feel right either. Maybe my perception is wrong but "asexual" doesn't feel nearly horny enough to describe me.

Complicating this, I'm not really in a position to try things out and figure it out better right now, in part though not exclusively because of the pandemic. But, for the purposes of this poll, I suppose that makes me a "yes", though I haven't fully figured it out and I don't know if I'd say my sexual orientation has evolved as much as my understanding and acceptance of it has.
