TopicHow is Ticket To Ride?

it's a fun game but it's not very balanced. you get penalized way too heavily if your goals are short and you have to build short paths. transcontinental goals and long rails are the way to go if you want to win.

ticket to ride europe is a more balanced version and much more fun as it solves a lot of the issues the original version had (less 5-6 car long rails, introduction of connection hubs, more connections in central locations, etc).

$240k as a developer is on the high end outside of management or extremely niche work. Take the Seattle job and enjoy the benefits, then use that experience and high pay to negotiate in your next job.

What exactly do you develop? Must be some kind of specialized business software or legacy maintenance stuff.
missed your question earlier. i'm a web developer and my area of expertise is frontend.

No it's not, it's pretty normal in any major market.

What is abnormal is getting that at 2.5 yoe. Guess it's facebook or something similar, or did you manage to pull senior?

Anyway, unless the opportunity is really that much better in terms of career growth, I'd recommend the nyc job. I moved to Seattle without knowing anyone here, and if you're in a good place socially, I'd say that's worth more than the TC difference.
not facebook but a company of similar prestige.

is 240K and 170K considered average salaries? Can you even survive in Seattle and New York with that kind of money?
i think they're pretty high for your average person. you can definitely survive on that money, splurge a little, and save a good amount.

also it rarely snows in seattle too. the winter is just wet. it often rains on christmas day I think, at least that's how I remember it. I used to live in the county just north of Seattle for like 20 years.
snow isn't a problem for me since it didn't snow at all this year in new york city. i don't like rain but it wouldn't be a deal breaker to me.

Are you in a managerial role now? Or are you able to command that as a straight up dev? I know it's possible in big tech but still pretty impressive. I work in tech/finance but I don't make as much.

How many years of experience do you have if you don't mind me asking? Either way you're probably a really good dev so I wouldn't expect your average techie to get there.
no, just an individual contributor. i have 2.5 years of experience. my current and past teammates have always commended me on being an excellent engineer but i don't think i'm anything special.

How old are you?
What does your gf think?
i'm 24. she is supportive of me relocating for work and keeping it long distance for the time being. not thinking about marriage yet but when i do, i will probably be back in new york.

What would you buy with 14.5K/mo that you'd be missing with "only" 9K/mo? And is it worth it to leave your family (and possibly your gf) behind?
planning to save up to buy a house and start a family. seattle would only be temporary (2-3 years) until i get promoted and find a new job again in new york (hopefully).

Do you live with your parents? Try to get the nyc job to match your other offer.
they won't match because i didn't do that well on the interview

also it does rain like 9 months of the year. the only real time it consistently won't rain is the summer. then you get droughts.
this sounds... awful

Are you a coder/dev TC?

Either way, I know it's tough to leave your whole life behind but if you go to Seattle for a year it could be great for your career and overall earnings.

You can get a really nice place for 1.8k, pay $700 additional in other living expenses, and still take home 3k a month additional after taxes so 36k additional a year compared to the NYC option.

After that you can come back to NYC and probably still get at least 170k (if not higher but the economy might go into a full blown recession so who knows) and have 36k more in your pocket and more life experiences.
yes i am a developer. i would probably be aiming for 350k for my next move after 2-3 years (hopefully in new york) if i take the seattle offer.
