So far it sounds like a vaccine is entirely possible. Part of the reason we never had any vaccine for other coronavirus is because they stopped hurting rich countries, they only hurt the poor ones. With the rich countries clear, there was less money in making a vaccine for them. Most experts right now are optimistic, and it doesn't seem like this virus will leave the rich countries any time soon so motivation will not b a problem

They see the number 2 and they know it's a small number but they don't do the math to see how many people that could potentially be, so they assume it's no big deal. If 20% of the US population were to get this, and 2% of them died, that's around 150,0000 deaths.

They may not make any actual changes, you initial post was about them saying something Canadians may not want to hear when it comes to their new projections. No matter what you do, people are going to die. My guess is just on your posts, they are going to give a realistic estimate and it will be quite scary for those expecting this to only take a few thousand lives. From there they will probably have stricter punishments, most likely higher fines. They aren't going to send these people to prison, not when most people are trying to let out low level offenders.

The virus from where ever it came from should be long dead if it ever comes in contact with what you ordered. The main concern should be the delivery driver or anyone to have come in contact with it recently. Open the package, throw out the box, and then wash your hands. If it makes you feel safer, wipe down the contents with a disinfectant wipe. You'll be safe, but to keep your stress down just do this is and you'll be ok.

I don't mean to be rude, but this is what I was talking about when you were so optimistic about where this was going. Hoping for the best is fine, but you need to acknowledge that there is a much larger possibility this goes worse before it gets better, even with the proper precautions. No one can realistically predict how this all plays out, as scary as it sounds we are all in a position where we have to wait and see. I'm still confident far more people will be fine than not, but speaking of hope shouldn't be the first and only thing we speak of, we and our leaders need to be real. Real will allow us to prepare. Real will allow us to not be blindsided. Real is far more reassuring than blind optimism that won't come to pass. Knowing something terrible is coming is better than being told it's not that bad before the world turns upside down. Odds are everyone on this board with be fine. Odds are most here won't even lose a loved one. Take solace in those odds, but don't allow them to blind you from an unpredictable situation.

Zero was impossible. South Korea handled it perfectly and they still lost lives, there was just no way around it. Someone infected would have returned home to the US and contact tracing would miss someone and it would spread a little and lives would still be lost. That said it could have been a lot better than it is right now. Honestly with the right decisions we could have been on the decline already. It wouldn't have been zero, but it would be a lot closer to that than it will be now.

These are the people Trump is trying to say are stealing supplies. How can a city like New York in a country like the US be in this kind of position. How could we fail these people who put their lives on the line, and have an elected official accuse them of something like that?

Italy has now lost 80 doctors to this, with the lack of supplies we have it's probably likely that we will start to see our front line workers suffer the same fate all while Trump says they are exaggerating or stealing.

Sadly that would be a good number, but only because of how fucked up it was all handled. If you look at the range of possibilities that could have happened back in January, saying 100,000 lives lost would be a good number would get you punched in the gut. We could have had half of that, maybe even less. 100,000 isn't 1,000,000, but that doesn't mean you did a good job. It means you fucked up but managed to salvage some of it.

100,000 is a good total if you ended up bungling it all up at any point. It's not something to pat yourself on the back for since it means you did fuck up, realistically based on data that showed various models of how this could have been realistically handled, a job well done would have been about half of that. It's a lot better than some of the projections that were out there before social distancing was in place, we're talking 350,000 to 1 million, there were a lot of scary numbers floating around from some very credible people. 100,000 is a lot better than that, but that's about 50,000 lives that didn't need to be lost.

This is the most significant thing to happen in our lifetime. 9/11 was one big shock, but it's not going to compare to COVID-19.

Some of these people have legions of loyal followers who will do anything they say and the US has too many people who are too stupid to listen to the experts. As much as I don't give a damn about any Kardashian, Kylie speaking up to encourage her followers to stay home probably helped a little. If people finally stopped resisting and followed the orders, we would see a sense of normalcy a lot sooner. No it won't be wiped out, but we could have a large chunk of summer that can be close to normal. If we continue to drag our feet, we may not have any real free time if it comes back in the fall to the degree it did this time.

One thing to remember is the treatments will improve as time goes on, that will greatly help use get back to something close to our normal way of life. If we can shorten the time you have it and lessen the chance of worst case scenario, life won't feel much different than it did before.

Coronavirus will last more than a few months, it will last until there is a vaccine. The question is how long life will be disrupted to this degree. No sound answer, but that too will probably be months and it will be longer for places hit the hardest like New York City.

Life will move forward to a sense of normalcy before a vaccine, but we may need to do what we are doing on and off again for the next 18 months until we have one. Probably not for months at a time like we're doing now, but we will need to disrupt it again.
TopicWhen will America be "back to normal"?
CanCanSam
03/28/20 11:43:29 PM

Normal normal, like where we were three months ago? Not until there is a vaccine. Until that happens, we will need to be conscious of this virus.

A semblance of normal where we can stop being scared and open up and live? June for most places, probably August for the hot spots. The vaccine is a ways a way, but improving how we fight and treat it is in the not too distant future, that will help us a lot. If we can make those who have it go through less pain and also shorten the span they have it, that would make a world of difference.

Something we also need to consider is that maybe a sense of normalcy doesn't come at all until a vaccine is had. That's scary to think about, but you can't just ignore that this is possible, you have to consider all realistic outcomes otherwise you will panic if it comes to fruition.

I don't mean to stoke the flames of fear, but we continue to see people on this board and life in general disregard the recommendations of the CDC and WHO because 99% of the dead in the world are elderly or already sick. Even if each and everyone of those young people survive with minimal problems, that doesn't change that they went to the hospital and took up space that could go to someone who may now die because there isn't enough space and supplies to go around which means the young get better care due to their odds of surviving. We are all in this together, and even if the age rate of those who die continues to be high, they are still preventable deaths and that its still a strain on the system that is already stretched way to thin. We need to continuously remind the ignorant youth that this is something that effects them and that their actions have consequences for others.

This is why Trump needs to stop speaking, let the others handle it. This really could just be a case of faulty tests, Spain already returned a ton of tests to China because they had something like 30% accuracy. For now this should be taken as a concern, but nothing we should worry about yet. They will continue to do testing, odds are this will be one of the things we learn early on in all of this. We could have a more solid answer a month from now, so just continue to take the proper precautions and see where things land.

It's actually smart to have canned food stocked up anyways. Never know when a big storm will hit, having some reserves is smart. Don't go overboard with it though.
