Never once talked about how great China was. I said my city was nice but always stated it was nothing but a means to an end. If I could have found a job paying as much and with as many benefits in Thailand or even Canada as I did in China, I wouldn't have went to China. Always been vocal on this board about the CCP. So much so that people kept saying to be careful because of the government possibly seeing it.

As for moving back, it isn't just to do with health care (though the Thai private health care system is quite good but it is expensive). It's to do with the fact that Canada isn't full of tens of millions of people who literally live day to day. The Thai government did nothing for their citizens and a lot people were out of work over night. A lot of those people can't afford to miss a single day of work, let alone months. If the virus gets completely out of hand globally, poorer countries are obviously going to collapse sooner and you'd be an idiot to want to stay if there was another option.

The embassy rushed my wife a temporary residence visa in under 48 hours. We got home on the 13th of April and then did our 2 weeks of quarantine. I'm currently waiting for my former boss to send my pay stubs from 2019 to finish my wife's permanent residency application. Even with applying for an open work permit at the same time, it's going to take months before she is able to work.

The precautions forced to take upon leaving Thailand to get back to Canada (including mandatory quarantine) are far stricter than anything we are seeing in North America. You're more likely to get the virus at a family BBQ or Walmart than you were getting infected/infecting anyone via international travel in the middle of April.

Shit man that is rough. I'm also in Canada but I've been allowed back to work at least for now. I think you'll be fine for the CERB but the crappy part is that it's still a taxable income so we will owe a portion of that 8k back in next years taxes.

I hope so as well. The rest of this year is going to be extremely difficult. We are currently staying with my parents which I would definitely prefer not to do. On top of that, we are in the process of applying for my wife's visa (waiting for paystubs from my boss in China so we can finish the last section and send it in). Likely going to take months for it to even get started due to the virus meaning we have to go who knows how many months with only me being able to work. Don't see how we will be able to get our own place without both of us working.

I lost my job at the end of January. So, that's 4 months of salary now. Flights from China to Thailand to flee the virus. Then paid for flights to get back to China but then they kicked all foreigners off the flights (got my refund for the actual flight to China but the domestic flights within Thailand cost me about $800cdn and were a total waste). It then cost me $4,500 to get my wife, daughter and I back to Canada. Combine that with the fact that we left everything in China and were forced to sell it for a major loss (if I sold my PC in Canada I would have got $3,000+, instead I managed to get $1,200).

I'm currently receiving the CERB benefit from the Canadian government but even though I qualify according to the information given, I won't be surprised if they tell me at the end of the year that I don't actually qualify for it and force me to pay it back ($8,000).

OK. Russian mob story (have posted it here before).

In September 2014 I began an 8 months backpacking trip throughout Southeast Asia. My third stop after Singapore and Malaysia was Indonesia where I planned to spend a month. I spent about 2 weeks in Sumatra before heading to Bali.

My first night in Bali I went to a billiarsa bar in the Kuta area. While drinking and playing pool I met these 2 Australian brothers. They asked me if I wanted to go to a place called M Bar Go with them that night. Figured why not.

Well, when I got there I found out that the club was owned by the mob and these 2 guys were good friends with these guys. The 2 Russians there were fucking massive. Both 6'4+ and over 300lbs. Even met up with Schapelle Corby (Australian arrested in Bali after arriving with a bag full of weed).

They were friendly enough and we all went to a place called Pyramid Bar (after hours club). It was there that I met a local girl named Era who knew everyone. We got along well and talked a fair bit.

At one point the girl gets in an argument with an older British sexpat who kept trying to dance with her (place was popular with freelance hookers so he just assumed she was). At one point the main Russian stands up, walks out to the dance floor, pulls out a gun and sticks it in the guys face. This is a crowded fucking club. He comes back to sit down and says to me "yea, I got a bit of a reputation here". The crazy part was not more than 10 minutes prior he had introduced me to a high ranking cop and said cop saw everything that happened. Tbh, at this point I should have disappeared and not saw these guys again.

The next day we all met up again. The one Russian saw me, bear hugged me and picked me up off the ground as if I was a toddler (6' 240lbs myself at the time). At this point the girl is showing more and more interest in me as well. She ends up going home with me that night. In my drunkenness I didn't wear a condom, nor did I pull out.

We hang out with these guys almost every night for a week. When we go to some bars the girl will get me to buy a drink for the security guys (members of a large Bali gang who are also directly involved with the Russians). One of the Australian guys said not to worry about it, it's a respect thing and now they'll have your back if anyone tries to start shit.

After about 6 days with this girl, she shows me a message from the main Russian. It says "I love you. I want you tk be my girl". My reaction was "well, fuck". She asked me what it meant and I told her that it meant he wanted you to be his girlfriend. She swears she only likes him as a friend (he told me he became Hindu and took it upon himself to try and look after the local Hindus when he could).

At this point I'm thinking "what the fuck do I do?" The last thing I want to be involved in is a love triangle with a Russian mobster. Hell, I didn't even really like the girl. She was fun to hang out with and fuck but it would have never gone beyond that. I was also worried that if she refused his advances, he would teach her a lesson by going after me.

That same day, I went to Kuta beach where I talked with some people that were regulars at that beach bar I was at. This is where I learned a LOT of information.

So, this Balinese gang likes to set foreigners up. Usually the girl isn't even involved. What the gang will do is find out from the girl when you are leaving. A few days before that they'll show up and claim you owe them one million rupiah per night for the girl (about $100). When you question it, they double the price. Then when you refuse, they jump the price to $500/night. After you refuse that, they tell you you are going to run some drugs for them or they'll kill you.

Now to know how these guys aren't just talk. Remember the club Pyramid I mentioned? Well, when that club was being built the main person behind it was an Australian. In Indonesia, like most of Asia, a foreigner can't own a business. A local has to have at least 51% ownership. So, this guy opened the bar with the help of that Bali gang and the Russians. After the guy spent 2 million dollars on it and the place was starting to take off, the "owner" (who was the leader of the gang) showed up at the Australian partners house. He then shoved 2 kilos of crystal meth in his face and was told he had 48 hours to be out of the country or the police would find that on him (death sentence in Indonesia). He was out of the country in 12 hours.

Now I start to realize that I might be in some trouble. So I made a plan. I was leaving Bali first thing the next morning. We already planned to meet up with everyone to drink so I decided that we would go, I'd get her hammered and then when she passes out, I'll sneak out of the apartment and disappear. So, that's basically what happened. I hesitated because she really did seem authentic and maybe those other people were wrong but I couldn't take the chance.

I snuck out at 7am, jumped in a taxi and had them take me to the pier. Jumped on a boat and spent the remainder of my Indonesia time in the Gili Islands.

Pretty sure she might be dead now as well. She disappeared from Facebook about a week later and has never been online again as far as I've seen.

Tl;Dr partied with Russian mob, starting fucking local girl who had one of said mobsters in love with her. Fled the islands after realizing I might be in a LOT of danger if I stayed.

That last one cannot be true. Is it really? Its kinda a nice Rudy story but you never swung the bat until the last game? And you got two home runs before eighth grade in practice? I will tell a couple baseball stories.

When i was growing up, we lived in a small town during middle school. But i was friends with lots of kids and one family had 3 boys who were all athletic and their dad was a coach. He was a fuckin sports nut, always loved to pitch to the kids in the batting range and help them hone their skills. We would play 2v2 or 3v3 baseball and football all the time.

A tourney came up and some kid couldnt make it. So they called me up on one day notice, even though i wasnt on the team. So i went, i bat lefty btw. So in my first at bat, i stepped up to the plate and smashed the ball deep in center right, it hit the fence in the air. And i was so happy to get a hit in my first ever at bat in a real game, i danced all the way to third base. People were laughing their asses off. Next guy batted me in and I scored.

Another time i was way older, i was hitting baseballs with a golf swing and i nailed the biggest kid on our team, Mitt, right in the ankle. Hard, he was pissed. I got the fuck out of there and went to the cages, he called me a pussy. Well he was up next and he got a hit. But they pulled him and put me in as a designated runner. In 8th grade, 1st to 2nd is a free steal if you are fast because barely any of those kids have the arm strength to throw down in time. So i stole second and then i stole third next. This was the last inning of the game btw, last at bat, and we were tied. Next pitch i took a huge lead and the pitcher threw into the dirt and it bounced past the catcher. I stole home, won the game, and everyone came out of the dugout and cheered for me and celebrated. Even Mitt

I have a good baseball/pet one. When I was about 9 years old we had a pomeranian poodle named Gizmo.

On a Monday he went missing. On Thursday we found out he had been hit and killed by a car. On Friday we had our rep baseball game (there was a house league and then the best players in the league played on the rep team). It was the second round of the playoffs, 1-1 series best of 3.

We were losing by 2 runs in the top of the the 7th. I came up with 1 out and bases loaded. As I was walking to the plate I said to my mom that I was going to hit a grand slam for Gizmo.

Quickly went 0-2 after swinging (and fouling) 2 pitches I shouldn't have swung at. 3rd pitch was high at my shoulders but I blasted it. Ended up beating the throw to home for the grand slam.

Ended up getting the 3rd out of the game in the bottom of the 7th after snagging a hard grounder up the 3rd base line and throwing him out at first from my knees.

That's my only good baseball story. Have some other crazy stories including the Russian mob in Indonesia, professional muay thai fights, etc.

Had been about the same for me (well about 5 of those years with my wife and eventually our daughter). Now I'm back living with my parents for about 6 weeks now.

We had to flee Asia (China and then Thailand) due to the CCP Virus and went to Canada with basically nothing.
