I have no experience with Athens, but I did take a brief trip to Austin a couple years back. It's one of those cities that doesn't necessarily make for an exciting vacation, but would actually be quite enjoyable to live in, if that makes sense. It definitely seems to be a safe city by all accounts, and as far as hipster neighborhoods go, South Congress is one of the better ones out there. I will say that I enjoyed Dallas significantly more.

I'd like to shout out Bozeman, MT here. It's obviously not in the South, and I sincerely doubt coke flows like honey out there, but you will find no shortage of educated 30-somethings. Along with cultural endeavors, great food, HOT SPRINGS!!, gorgeous views, etc. The college town culture is distinct but not overbearing. The people are super friendly, the coffee is top-notch, Cactus Records is the best record store I've been to... oh man, there's a lot to love about that city.

Do not, under any circumstances, consider Louisville (a Kentucky Fried Hellhole) or Nashville (the Woo Girl capital of the world) for your move.

Good luck mate, I plan to move as well (hopefully next year) and it's an exciting feeling!

Love it. This reminds me of the galaxy brains in Staten Island who aggressively berated a woman for not wearing a mask and ran her out of the store... all while being on top of each other and breaking social distance.

But hey, they broke social distance to look good for Twitter, so it's all good! Right?

Hoo boy, that Dark Souls/TLOU writeup was the humdinger I was hoping it would be. Bravo. A few random thoughts.

1) Last year, I firmly believed Pokemon Sword/Shield had the biggest shitshow of a pre-release window I had ever seen. I still can't believe it's not only been topped, but was topped so quickly. The gaming industry is going through some serious growing pains, that's for sure.

2) I like this quote: "This stuff just does not sell, which is why these people go on social media to spread their BS; they just aren't accepted anywhere else." I'm really excited to see what the 2020s have in store, because I firmly believe that backlash towards social media is going to be one of the biggest counterculture movements of the coming years. Across all platforms, the level of shrill vitriol has become flat-out untenable, and an increasing number of people are going to reach a breaking point and cut as much of this social secondhand smoke from their lives as possible. I'm totally here for it.

3) Neil Druckmann needs a handler so fucking bad. Or a career change.

Nickelback reached a level of ubiquity where you straight-up couldn't avoid them unless you were some kind of recluse. Whether you were going to the grocery store, flipping through radio stations or bar-crawling, you were gonna run into Nickelback - and, most likely, often.

This is why they received more hate than similar schlock like Saliva, 3 Doors Down, etc. It was easy to pay those bands no mind; Nickelback, not so much. A lot of people grew irritated from hearing Chad Kroeger's dying-goat voice ad nauseum, and began cracking jokes and shitting on them as a way of commiserating. And really, can you blame them?

This answer can be applied to the other pop music whipping posts: Justin Bieber, Tones and I, Imagine Dragons, etc.

Anyone else think Pokemon RBY is going to be a noticeable step down down from its peak moving forward? I love RBY to death, but there's definitely more going against it these days. I feel like dwindling votals/casual site traffic will do it no favors, and the online discussion about Gen I just seems to get more and more negative with each passing year. (And I'm not just talking about Smogon types bashing "genwunners," either.) Plus, GameFAQs is so dismissive towards Pokemon in its current state that none of the new generations from the 2010s even made this last contest.

If the next contest had RBY going up against Majora or FFVI, I'd take either of those two as an upset special. RBY should still be the favorite in those matchups, of course, but those two games would totally have a shot at victory IMO.

I feel like the dawn of streaming services that allow multiple distribution forms has made movies more accessible than ever before, increasing the chances of a lot of good films that wouldn't necessarily earn big box offices get more exposure. And that seems to me like a much bigger deal to cinema than a successful blockbuster franchise.

This is also huge for watching films of decades past. "Back in my day," if you wanted to legally watch some Harold Lloyd films, you had to either spring for out-of-print VHS/DVD copies (which were oftentimes expensive as a motherfucker) or patiently await a run on Turner Classic Movies. Now, much of his work can be readily streamed. That still blows my mind.

The Gen Z cinephiles are gonna be badass, considering everything they have at their fingertips.
