Still disappointed Tifa Vs. Aerith didn't make it in. Would have been a fun, unique entry. Kinda surprised they got less noms than some of the people that made vote ins. Fear the power of the suggestion box I guess.

Add/Remove might have worked for other contests, but there was so much unknown going into 2009 that people were hesitant to make any major suggestions. Something similar where bracket placements get switched might be a better idea as well, but that was obviously not possible in 2009.

MM might be my favorite game, but its win left a bad taste in my mouth too. It's not fair, but the fact that it was dependent on a nasty, mean spirited 4chan rally always put a damper on things to me.

Plus, I follow these contests to predict things, not because I care about my favorites winning, and it beating GSC still makes no sense after that 2009 match dammit!

Damn, I actually still had faith in Skyrim and went with it in the Second Change bracket too! For a couple minutes there, it looked like I had it.

Still, for someone that's barely played any new games in the last ten years (been getting into playing again the past three or so years, by all older stuff), I feel good about my bracket. Even called a couple first round upsets (although I think I might have thought Nioh was Nier when I predicted it to win, lol)

oh so you mean it had to be two newcomers who also won their first matches

"independently" doesn't really convey that very well!

I guess, but it's not just winning the first round. Bowser Vs. Yoshi doesn't count either for example, since their entire fourpack was newcomers, so their match was going to be Newcomer Vs. Newcomer no matter what. Ganondorf and Magus's foupack had one Veteran in it, so that result wasn't set in stone.

what does this mean

the only gimmick SC2K5 had was removing Link, Cloud, and Seph from the bracket

The match was in the first round, so it was explicitly set up.

Wasn't Vincent/Kerrigan Newcomer vs Newcomer?

Did not independently occur.

I'm assuming you mean main contests only and not specialized side contents like GotD.

There's a bunch this year probably, but there was actually not a single Newcomer Vs. Newcomer match past the first round in 2010

Pointless Trivia Alert:

For 12 years, Ganondorf Vs. Magus was the only Newcomer Vs. Newcomer match to independently occur. It wasn't until MGSV Vs. Dark Souls in 2015 that this would happen again.

Good picks so far. I'd give 2002 to Link or Crono over Mario, but I can't argue with anything else.

I know this is jumping the gun, and while he doesn't have enough other performances that year to get MVP for 2013, I would consider Link's performance in L/S/D to be the single greatest contest performance of all time. He went toe to toe with one of the most ralliable games of all time, and almost won, and actually might have without the downtime. I know that due to the rubberband nature of rallies, the downtime wasn't necesarilly the deciding factor, but the fact that this is even a discussion is astounding.
