I don't understand why some view this as a bad thing. What's the point of driving to an office if you can do it from home? Can someone tell me what the negatives are that some have? I assume having more family time and spending less on gas would be a good thing for some people. Plus you don't have anyone breathing over your shoulder, so you can slack off a little.

You're kind of overreacting. If you ignore the imported cases, they have 10 new cases. Having zero over long periods of time won't happen until we have a vaccine, so we will always have small blips. The important info here is that they caught most of them while they weren't showing symptoms which may mean they caught it early. If anything this is proof that we need to step up out testing so we can do what China did here an nip it at the bud. Zero infections has never been realistic for any country, even once you reach the otherside you will still get small pockets, it's how discover them and handle them that matters.

South Korea had a bigger jump, but even that is to be expected. As long as you don't have it spreading like it did early on and keep it confined, life can be a little bit normal. This virus bothering a few dozen people isn't the same as it bothering everyone.

Pretty much. That's why I'm happy that despite New York being one of the worst hit places, at least it's now trending in the right direction. Deaths are still coming in at a high number and every day that is tragic, but at least it doesn't appear to be running rampant anymore. Not that I give Cuomo as much credit as the media does, but once he realize this was bad he has done an admirable job of trying to get it under control. He's still an ass and far from perfect, but I can truthfully say at this with this virus I feel a little safer than I would in almost every other state with a a few notable exceptions.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a big deal. I mean it's a big deal in the sense that the virus isn't dead, but that isn't possible. You aren't going to get the number to zero without a vaccine. 17 cases, with 7 being imported, isn't a bad thing. That's manageable, and that's why we need mass testing here. They caught nearly all of them before symptoms were shown, which means a higher chance of tracking down everyone they came into contact with. This is actually what everyone is striving for. This virus isn't a big deal if you can keep it low like this.

Now if it grows, that's a concern. But 10 new non-imported cases is a success in this instance.

But aren't the orders not necessarily for masks, but for anything to cover your mouth and nose? That's why they have said they are okay with scarves and bandanas. Something tells me your work around won't work. And what's the point of wearing one with a hole? Either don't be compliant or be compliant, it's that simple.

Please follow the context of the topic. Why the police aren't willy nilly shooting armed protesters (even though that itself is an absurd premise) is because it is just a whole bunch of non-tactical street cops with handguns standing around surrounded by a whole bunch of assault rifle whackos. Pretty sure the police know they are outmatched and fairly certain they feel a bit helpless in the situation.

Cops are equipped with more than just handguns. They have vertical gun wracks between the two front seats that have either two rifles or one rifle and a shotgun.

For those who read this and think some of it's fearmongering, they admit some of it is worst case scenario. Sadly being worst case scenario doesn't mean unrealistic. The idea is to not be caught off guard if that day happens, we need to be prepared and if it doesn't come pass the things we learned can be utilized in possible future events. I'm just going to post three ways this could play out, but it's interesting all around. Just don't get to nervous about some of it, this is still so new that no one knows where it will go.

Scenario 1: The first wave of Covid-19 in spring 2020 is followed by a series of repetitive smaller waves that occur through the summer and then consistently over a one- to two-year period, gradually diminishing sometime in 2021

Scenario 2: The first wave of Covid-19 is followed by a larger wave in the fall or winter and one or more smaller waves in 2021. "This pattern will require the reinstitution of mitigation measures in the fall in an attempt to drive down spread of infection and prevent healthcare systems from being overwhelmed," they wrote. "This pattern is similar to what was seen with the 1918-19 pandemic."

Scenario 3: A "slow burn" of ongoing transmission. "This third scenario likely would not require the reinstitution of mitigation measures, although cases and deaths will continue to occur."

States and territories should plan for scenario 2, the worst-case scenario, they recommended.

"Government officials should develop concrete plans, including triggers for reinstituting mitigation measures, for dealing with disease peaks when they occur," they advised.

Also if you continue reading, you will see they all but face palm at things opening up right now.

I believe that is still the case. I believe it's coming down and death is coming down as well. Albany seems to be on the rise, they had nearly 100 new cases in the last 24 hours and they aren't testing that many. So it appears even with the city coming down, other places are still going up. Cuomo better start looking at Albany a little more, especially if this below is accurate.

Obviously this is China we are talking about, so who knows how accurate that is, but it's clear that their country is opening up including cities hit the hardest. While we can't impose the strict measure they did for Wuhan, it's important to remember that the entire country wasn't shut down like that. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and while New York City may be a ways away, every other place in the country is nearing this moment. A few days ago we were all in favor of states rights, and now we are upset that a state is disregarding Trump and his team of expert's plan of when and how to open up.

Not that I'm trying to call anyone out on this, it just shows how fucked up this entire situation is. One day something seems like the right choice and the next it seems like the wrong choice. We are fucked either way, getting it from both ends with no way out.

I actually don't mind Trump's outlined plans for opening up, I wish states like Georgia would actually follow it instead of playing it by ear. This probably won't end well.

I'm ok with phased reopenings, but I'm concerned we don't have the broad testing ability to do so at the moment. I mean California is the only state currently testing asymptomatic people, and they just started doing it. He did that pretty frequently for his Gubernatorial campaign in 2018. Every goddamn interview was either how great he is or how bad Trump is or how much he hated Trump. In the case of sacrificial Mark, everything with him seemed to be how much he hated Cuomo.

I'm not Cuomo supporter, but this topic is more about this situation at hand and not about how you feel about them throughout their history. Cuomo is a egotistical douche, but once he started taking this threat seriously he has been doing a fine job. I don't think my opinion on him will change that much, but I trust him for now in how he has handled the situation. He doesn't have my undying loyalty though, I'll jump ship if he fucks up and call him out on it.

That's ultimately the question that needs to be asked. Trump has accepted that opening up is up to the states, so what is your opinion in how your governor has handled the situation so far and do you think they will do a good job if and when they do start to open up.

I've never liked Andrew Cuomo and I think he could have acted sooner, but lately I think he has done a decent enough job once he started taking it seriously. It doesn't sound like he is hell bent on opening up too quickly, I think he even extended the lock down recently, so I'm not that worried of a second wave yet. I would say I trust him on this, though I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of his or anything.
