So how does this compare to Memories of Celceta (Vita) and YS VIII (Switch), the only other Ys games I've played? I liked them both as purely mindless entertainment but I'm not sure how hyped I can get for a Ys game.

If you like Ys as mindless fun this probably works better than those - it's shorter and while the storytelling is fine it's much less of a focus.
