Looks like most of the titles that Crunchyroll removed from its library on August 1 can still be found on Hidive. Using that as my excuse to revisit Invaders of the Rokyjouma.

Watching Lower Decks as I type this, in fact. Pacing is hard to get right, especially in comedy. The first Netflix "season" of MST3K never quite got it right, and even Rick & Morty had a bumpy start on it.

I am going to pretend that Episode 12 of Are You Lost? did not happen. Never forget the cardinal rule of Clerks 2. You never go ass to mouth!

And I maintain that Kill La Kill is the real sequel to FLCL.

But, as I have said before, .hack//SIGN is my favorite 'trapped in the game' anime, though Log Horizon is up there, too.

Maybe I'm just getting old, maybe I'm at the point where I'd rather have a good localization than a direct translation, but 'good enough' is generally good enough for me, and I'm saying that as a (former) language major.

By episode 3 I basically fell in love with it and looked up the rules to shogi which is far superior (and cooler) to chess.

See also: Tonari no Seki-kun. Shogi only takes up one episode of that, though.

I have almost no computer nostalgia - when I was a kid I never owned one (nor did my parents), in school we were mostly using Commodore PETs, and the only friend I had who owned a home computer had a TRS-80 (Tandy Radio Shack), and my one cousin owned an Apple IIe.

The only computer my family owned during the '80s was the Apple IIC, to be upgraded to a Packard Bell 486 (and the Internet, courtesy of the Mosaic browser in '94). I had a favorite uncle who introduced me to the Commodore 64 and, after a certain point, the Amiga, but that was the only Amiga I ever saw.

A minor moment of geekery for me: I backed the Kickstarter for Amiga Power, a two-disc set of remixes from the titular computer (and the underground magazine of the same game), and my physical copy arrived yesterday. Feels good to jam to those tracks.

Picked up a Roku Express Plus -- it can take a standard A / V cable, not only HDMI -- and hooked it up to the tube TV I normally use for PS2 and the like. (The local Goodwill and Salvation Army no longer take tube TVs, and that means the ones I still have are officially antiques, depressing as that sounds.) Got the idea after my (cheap) tablet decided that it prefers to reboot over and over instead of running anything. This, plus a pair of headphones, means that I should be able to catch up on several of my shows without having to share the big TV, and that means I will be able to watch more anime and put a stop to this long dearth of watching anything.

Where does Transformers fit? It's a cartoon based on Japanese toys that an American company turned into a best-selling toyline (which its Japanese creator then used to sell those same toys)

Transformers is more on the anime side of the line, all the more so because there are several Transformers series that are Japan-exclusive (e.g. Super-God Masterforce and Victory) and thus not tailored to American audiences.

Unrelated: For the longest time, I thought K-On! was released in '03. I was a little surprised to learn it was released in '09.

One of my two cats likes to sit behind my head on top of my computer chair as I type on this laptop ... or, at least, she used to do that, but she got a little too fat, so now I have to chase her around the apartment and get her to exercise more.

As far as as geek activities go, I am almost done with the D&D cartoon, so I have also started on Challenge of the Go-Bots and M.A.S.K. The M.A.S.K. DVD set is ... of dubious origin, and the video quality sucks, but I still enjoy the show. Go-Bots is better than I remember, and the remaster helps.

Been binging '80s cartoons instead (e.g. Dungeons & Dragons and M.A.S.K.). Granted, most of those come from Japanese studios, so they indirectly qualify, but ... not quite anime, I suppose.

It occurred to me that I had not finished Are You Lost? yet, so I got back into it ... after I got the Crunchyroll app working on my tablet again. The Android version is buggy, glitchy, and generally awful, but at least it eventually works, unlike the Kindle Fire version, which I think they just totally forgot to update some time last year.

I am also old enough to remember having a big TV antenna on the house ... that hooked up to a TV that looked like a big wooden cabinet with a screen on it. That TV sucked. I spent more time watching the little black-and-white one that was hooked up in the kitchen. Clear memories of catching the beginning of Johnny Carson before I had to go to bed.

Cable happened to my family relatively early, though, and I was a long-time passenger on the USA Cartoon Express. That was a good time. And I remember catching Disney cartoons on Friday afternoon, back when those were good (e.g. Ducktales).

By odd coincidence, I have been rewatching the old Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. Mill Creek Entertainment did me a big solid by rereleasing that so cheaply on DVD (alas, minus the cool extras of the old Rhino release).

The only way that will ever make any sense is if we admit the PS2 is the biggest failure of all time, since the amount of shovel ware and barely playable garbage basically started the idea of mass producing low-energy games for whatever console happened to be selling the hottest. But that would be silly, because like the PS2, the sheer volume of Wii games means there's likely some between Nintendo and their 3rd parties that will be enough to appease most.

This goes all the way back to the Atari 2600 and the Crash of '83, IMO. Shovelware is an ancient curse that keeps coming back again and again, though a lot of it now seems to be digital.

I love the design of the original GBA, and I like that it takes non-proprietary batteries, but ... lack of a lit screen kills it for me. It's all but invisible to me in most settings.

Nintendo hardware. Gimmicks or no gimmicks, it usually has two things going for it in any given generation: durability and battery life, both big selling points for me. (My launch 3DS is an exception in the battery life department, but is otherwise still great.) I can still play almost all my Nintendo hardware with a minimum of fuss, and many of those systems also have huge libraries. Especially the DS! As much as I love the GBA, the DS is looking more and more like the most robust thing Nintendo ever released.

Nobody faults gamemakers for not using the mic on the DS or 3DS.

I noticed that blowing into the microphone -- what the player is supposed to do -- did nothing in Wario Ware Gold on 3DS, but I got the desired result by shouting "FUCK!" into it instead.
