It depends on the person, the place, and your finances. What is good for me isn't good for you and vice versa. Like the one I got for my wife (back when we were only engaged) was on sale and the total price was something like 68,000 dollars (after sale price. Was closer to 120,000 before sale). Usually as a random gift I buy her jewelry in the 14,000 range. But this probably isn't the right price for you so trust your judgement.

I think I paid like $1500-2000 (20 years ago) for the ring I proposed to my wife with. We didn't do a formal engagement. She picked out my first band, and I don't remember what it was. The second one I just posted about earlier was less than $100. I had been talking about buying a tungsten ring because I really like their look. So she surprised me with buying me one to replace my old band. And now she wears it on a necklace so it stays safe.

I guess we'll never know considering all we had to go on is her saying it's a "Little ass ring" and contemplating giving it back

So compromise is you buy her (or him) a nice ring because it means something to them, even if it doesn't mean the samething to you.

People have different value systems and different ways of viewing the same thing. What happens if you fall in love with someone who sees a wedding ring as more than "Just some piece of metal"? are you going to respect her views or tank a loving relationship because she has the gall to think differently to you?

Look at things like Mama Mia, how many boyfriends do you think went to go see that movie because they wanted to?

To a lot of women that ring is something they will wear and cherish for their entire lives, it's a physical representation of your love and the mental/spirutual connection that binds you together You getting them a cheap crappy ring to them is you saying your relationship and her worth is cheap and crappy.

Same reason you don't buy a girl oversized Pajamas/Sweatpants for her birthday and then go go "What? They're cheap, warm and efficent clothing." you buy her a pretty dress which is about as practical as jumping off a cliff.
