I'm fairly convinced that he did nothing illegal, but I'm not convinced that he's completely clean and in the clear.

As to the collapse of his marriage. I'm not sure I'm gonna buy the guy who thinks fishing for nudes from his fanbase, and was eager and willing to hook-up with the recently-separated partner of a close friend, as the one to provide and honest and unbiased account of the breakdown of his marriage.

I'm sure Heidi did some dirty dealings of her own, but I'm not buying the whole "Heidi was the real villain and I was the victim!" story.

A major problem is that the show has lost it's cultural relevance. At it's height it was the edgy show portraying a brazen view of American culture and family amidst a sea of family-friendly sitcoms. It was a reaction to shows that had come before it, it could be both familiar and shocking all at once.

But now, thirty years later? The view of American life that the show was once mocking has long since faded away, and the generation that grew up on The Simpsons are now adults - and much of the media has shifted to appeal to the generation that grew up on shows like The Simpsons. It's become the show to mock, rather than the one to do the mocking.

Thus the show ambles on, trying to take shots at modern American culture, and politics, and whatever else in an age where such mocking is prevalent. Rather than being the edgy new product, The Simpsons is the dinosaur lumbering behind trying to show that it's still relevant and that it can be just as cutting and clever as every other popular show today.

I think the humor would definitely play to the right audience today if you got some quality people behind the project. If anything I think it would struggle mainly because the Western genre isn't nearly as popular as it was at the time. That and a lot of the anachronistic humor would be outdated today.

And yeah, it wasn't like the film wasn't controversial in its own time. Brooks had to fight the studio on a number of scenes.

I liked when they made allusions to presidents or made fun of them in cameos like Bill Clinton playing Saxophone.

But yeah...since the 2008 election it's been blatant.

they did a whole episode were homer beat up Bush Sr

And put Mr Burns, Sideshow Bob and Dracula down as Republicans

There's a difference between making humor with social commentary, and making social commentary with humor.

Two Bad Neighbors wasn't about making fun of George Bush Sr. for being a bad President, or having bad policies. The humor was derived from Bush Sr. as a person, portraying him as crotchety and uptight - a perfect target for Bart and Homer and emphasized by the references it makes to Dennis the Menace. It worked very well as there was already an established enmity between Bush and the show. They sprinkle in a few jokes about his presidency here and there, but it's never at the forefront of the humor.

The episode also ends by poking fun at Gerald Ford in a similar way, portraying him as an oafish buffoon similar to Homer.

Sideshow Bob Roberts does portray the Republican Party as comically evil, with their headquarters being a medieval castle and their members reciting occultish rites at the start of their meeting, but the episode never really goes any deeper than that. It never attacks Republican politics or politicians directly, and compared to Mayor Quimby Sideshow Bob comes off far more capable and intelligent.

It's the difference between political humor like this:

And what's in the OP.

He most certainly existed. There's enough mention of him in various documents of the time to assure us of that and his identity was even speculated about during the time of his imprisonment.

I'm doubtful that he was a brother of the King, however. Likely some other figure of French nobility who had shamed himself and arrested, but masked to preserve any familial relation.

Can't get down to business to defeat the Huns if there's no Huns in your movie.

But seriously, this looks the most promising of the live action adaptations I've seen so far. They're actually gonna treat the story seriously and move this film in a different direction than the animated film? Great!

King Aerys was convinced that Rhaegar was leading a plot against him and he shows up at Harrenhal precisely for that reason. But in the years prior to the tourney, you can already see the seeds of an alliance forming among the Great Lords.

Eddard and Robert are fostered by Jon Arryn, forging ties between Houses Arryn, Stark and Baratheon
Lyanna is betrothed to Robert, cementing the ties between House Stark and Baratheon
Catelyn is betrothed to Brandon, creating a tie between House Tully and Stark
And Hoster Tully attempts to betroth Lysa to Jaime Lannister - which Aerys quashes by appointing Jaime to the Kingsguard, the event that leads Tywin to resign as Hand of the King.

So even prior to Harrenhal, the alliance that will fight for Robert during the Rebellion is already in place, and had everything gone to plan House Lannister would have been included as well. The only mainland houses missing are the Tyrells, who were staunch Targaryen loyalists, and the Martells, who were tied to Prince Rhaegar through his marriage to Elia.

I've always backed the theory that the Tournament at Harrenhal was arranged as a pretext for the Great Lords to reach out to Prince Rhaegar and bring him in to their plot to oust King Aerys.
