That whole side plot is a waste of time, and amounts to nothing. Admiral purple hair is poorly written, and comes off as ignorant for not explaining her plan to everyone not named Leia. The other half is Luke being a a grumpy old man, and apparently giving up on life & being a hermit over "sensing" some darkness in Ben Solo, and trying to kill him. That's poor characterization, and is poorly written. Thoughtlessly killing off Admiral Ackbar, Chewbacca being an afterthought, and loads more problems. It's like they tried to take everything anyone liked about the other movies, or EU and trashed it. Even Hamill shit on the movie until he was told to reel it in.
