I get buying nice things, as, let's call them trophies. Maybe you got a new promotion, or finished your schooling. You went out, and bought yourself something nice to commemorate the occasion. Like the guy who got promoted to manager, and bought himself a rolex, or a mercedes.

Funnily enough when I got my biggest promotion, I bought myself a SNES Classic... nearly at full price too ($1 discount). In hindsight, maybe I should've bought something nicer but it's what I wanted :)

But to go and buy something with the thought "ya, john in accounting is gonna be so jelly" just seems so silly. Buy what you want with the money you earned, and fuck everyone else.

You're right though, it's probably an age/maturity thing. Or maybe being part of a culture where people flaunt, and you just see it as being douchey.

I personally think it's douchey to buy it with the thought of making other people jealous... but it's not so far removed from the thought process of I want to look good/impress people with my success, etc... and in some careers, you do need to be able to flaunt a little bit of success or at least look the part.

What really annoys me about luxury goods though is the way the brands treat the customers which can only be described as snobbish or arrogant. I bought my wife a luxury handbag last year as a push present and was made to feel like they were doing me a favour by inviting me to speak to a staff member, and then being offered a chance to visit the back of the store to let me buy one. Good thing she really liked the bag though.

I am able to watch a performance or event and can appreciate it for myself instead of worrying about recording it for all of my social media friends to see. I can respect authority and I do not believe I am entitled to anything. I have to work for it if I want my lot in life to improve.

So basically you're a millennial who doesn't fit the general mould/stereotype of a millennial.

As I understand it, a lot of high priced watches retain their value pretty well if you keep them in good condition. So it's not a *total* waste of money. But I still wouldn't buy one, I'm fine with my $100 Citizen eco-drive I bought 11 years ago.

You don't always have access to a computer or phone to check the time. It's just a reliable thing to have.

Mens luxury watches can appreciate in value depending on rarity/condition, just like handbags. Where there's a limited market, and the manufacturer does regular price "alignments", the rising tide lifts all boats.

On a related note, my wife actually buys and sells luxury handbags so I've gotten a good sense of this now.

No but pretty much most girls will notice each others bags, the same way dudes will notice each others cars. Thats my point, bags brands are obvious..its a major accessory item that is obvious. You see it and you know its chanel or whatever. And any dude who has ever had a girlfriend will recognize most of these bag brands. And with cars, its not just the looks but the performance factor too.

But with watches...95% of people aren't gonna know that you're wearing a 5000 dollar watch as opposed to a 500 dollar watch. The other 5% are watch snobs who dont understand why people dont care about watches.

1. Handbags - I agree. I used to think Coach was a good brand and Furla was a luxury brand lol.
2. Watches... I think the average person can usually recognise a luxury watch, and maybe even identify whether it's a Tag, Rolex, etc but most probably can't distinguish between whether it's a basic model or some uber expensive one. Kindof like handbags as well once you get past the brand.

Like whats the difference between a $150-$400 classy looking watch that matches your outfit versus a $5000-10,000 watch that no one is even gonna know how expensive it is unless they're a watch snob.

At least with other luxury items you get performance and/or noticable brand status

I'd say it's very quick to recognise a decent luxury watch which cost more than $5k... but then that could just be reflective of what many of my friends are into.

As for other luxury items, it really depends... I feel that the "real" luxury items offer no tangible performance benefits over other premium or traditional luxury items but instead just excellent craftsmanship/materials/style. i.e. you're paying a premium purely for an X factor rather than a clearly measurable metric/specification. eg a Maybach over an S class for example.

Others have posted stuff that really casts into doubt his authenticity, but if we assume he's legit, he could be the way that he is because he "suffered" long years of not being socially savvy enough to "get where he is now".

Sometimes when you have people like this and they develop issues because of it, they just dote on and on about the thing when they finally get it. I was watching a video not too long ago about a comedian who is not well liked, but makes good money. He notes who all his critics are and then sends them harassment on a regular basis. So for instance if he's traveling, he'd send them emails going on about how he's flying to the bahamas on first class, sipping a martini or something ridiculous like that. "I just got paid x amount for doing this thing!", "check out this car I bought hahaha" kind of like rubbing his "success" in the face of his detractors.

So given there are actual, real world examples of this type of personality, it could be possible that L numbers is one such case.

Yeah I'm not surprised that it's a known personality type. I guess the thing which I find a little amusing is most of the things he talks himself up on whether it be picking up women (or not), job/importance of role, watches, shoes, attitude towards women, fighting with siblings, etc... it just feels like someone who isn't in their thirties. This isn't to say that I think everything he posts is fictitious but rather, it's just odd to me that someone would be so proud to post those things.

3. Having been at this for a decade, he cant be normal.

In all instances its damning. Because even if he was getting all these girls, bragging about it to impress some CE incels for years is pathetic to the point of abnormality. If it was a gimmick, then lying for years on end to amuse himself, that is also abnormal.

You can make this kind of argument about literally anything I pay my balance off in full every single month without fail. Meaning I have never paid even one cent in interest. Explain to me in detail how I'm the one being gamed in this situation?

About the only thing that could be said at that point is that there are indeed studies that show that some people might spend more money with a CC than with a DC because they "don't really think of it as money".I'd wager that the vast majority of people that think like that are the idiots that run up a lot of debt. So what it really requires is the correct mindset. When I swipe my CC, I think of it as money coming directly out of my pocket, it feels just as bad as cash to me because quite frankly, it will be coming out of my bank account within 30 days at absolute most. Additionally, those same studies show that if you keep constant track of your spending (which I do, multiple times a week) you are less likely to over spend.

Yes it's true, a very large percentage of the population are idiots and will run up a bunch of debt, and those are definitely the customers that CC companies want. It does not take a lot of brains to say "Hey, that's not a good idea even a little bit"

Assuming no annual fee then yes youre right, youve financially come out ahead by using a CC. You dont revolve any balance and hence its the merchant who ends up paying for your convenience through their fees. This is what I would consider the financially responsible way of utilising a CC.

Once youve hit this point it becomes a matter of choosing and spending in a way which optimised youre benefits whether its be points, cash back, etc. I have noticed it definitely varies a lot between countries and markets as to how complex those reward schemes can be in terms of specific spend criteria and hurdles (presumably aimed at helping reduce number of people who actually benefit from them whilst still using the cards to rack up merchant/acquirer/issuer fees).

The only other argument though around whether youve been gamed or gaming the system could be around what data is gleaned from your spending. Some would put a value on this and fight it. For me though I dont really care TBH.

I love kids, so it's an easy yes for me. I'd be a teacher if that didn't entail horrible wages and depressingly limited options to help students in real ways.

On that last point, I think it greatly depends on which country you live in and the society/community. It always amazes me how differently each society/community will treat or view the "teachers". From what I can tell, the US is not too different from Australia in that there's some respect, but it's also largely just another job which appears to have great work/life balance with school holidays and a "9-3" (and yes I'm aware this is VERY far from the reality), and dare I say, it's a career which people often take because of their academic performance (i.e. counter-intuitively, it doesn't require great marks to become a teacher).. Then I compare with how it's viewed in some Asian countries where teachers are respected/revered and kids and parents both want to impress and do well for (and suck up to) the teachers.

I am currently on parental leave until the end of the year and its been a great experience to bond with my newborn daughter. Definitely not boring at all but much more tiring and exhausting than I anticipated - and I used to do 100 hour work weeks.

Its really rewarding and I love seeing her smile. Its been tough to be away from work whilst the wife went back to her normal routine but Im so glad I took this time to be with the baby.

As for money though since the topic alludes to it, fortunately both my wife and I had employers offering 4 months paid parental leave and I also had long service leave too (another 3 months). We both are on >$200k each so honestly the finances never really bothered us.
