oh hey guys I finally finished a new Thwomp Stomp

Thwomp Stomp V: Galaxy Glide

Course ID: 2K0-GY2-T6G
Style: NSMBU

I had a lot of ideas for this one, and I wanted to make a level using clear conditions -- it wasn't until later that I realized you can't have checkpoints in a level with those. So some later segments got scrapped and will be put to use in future levels.

I found low-gravity physics to be a fun change-up for the Thwomp Stomp series. I also really liked the idea of making the moon essentially your enemy, as he will destroy the Thwomps and thus your platforms if you make contact (though there is an intended way of making him disappear at one point). And hopefully the second half where you're actually destroying the Thwomps is fun? That's my biggest worry, but I think it can get tense when you're running out of star power and deciding whether to find a safe spot or go for another Thwomp kill.

Pro-tip that I also left as a comment: you want to defeat 42 Thwomps before entering the pipe back at the beginning!

Also people should post their maker IDs (or just course IDs for their favorite levels they made) in this topic, because I think I only played a few B8er levels so far.

I had a feeling I would hate the game because GTA IV was exactly the same experience to me. Incredibly monotonous gameplay slowed down in an attempt to tell a more meaningful story, at least by GTA standards. Your complaints about the sluggish controls and cover system being bad definitely apply here. I doubt RDR2 is on the same level of tedium, but GTA IV was a steaming pile of trash that I absolutely did not force myself through.

When does it come out? I am so buying.

And why no 3?

3 hasn't been remastered yet and who knows if it ever will be. It was handled by a different team than the first two, while the folks left behind at the defunct Iguana were in the process of founding Retro Studios.

3 is still pretty good stuff though. Hopefully there's at least a small demand for a remaster and it happens eventually.

And 2's been out since 2018 on consoles not named the Switch and 2017 on PC.

Also obligatory "play Turok 2" message. It's one of my favorite games of all time, now with tolerable framerate!

DAMMIT so that section is still cheesable... Yeah that's not at all the intended path. You simply spin on the Thwomp below you and ride it like the ones you were just doing before. You just ride it twice - so it hits the switch on and back off again, then spin jump onward.

How I forgot that obvious cheese...when I put spikes up above between the switch blocks to prevent a less obvious cheese opportunity, is beyond me.

I managed get PangaeaPanga (a legendary Kaizo level maker and Twitch streamer) to play your level. He makes brutally difficult levels such as this:

I submitted your level to him because he was hosting a stream for playing Viewer/Subscriber levels. PangaeaPanga actually figured out that you had to get that one Thwomp to trigger the ON/OFF Switch 2 times before proceeding to the long spin jumping stretch. It took him about 10 minutes to beat your level.

Holy shit dude. Of course I know who Pangaea is. Luster, you are my hero.

I think I stated it earlier here, but yeah the screen can be slightly tricky in that last section. The key is to alternate long jumps to see more of the screen and short hops to stay low! He basically intuitively figured it out by the second or third go round. I would've made that section an autoscroller if I could - shame this game still limits you to only one sub-world.

I have 111% and I don't think I looked anything up. I've done enough "bomb every spot" in Metroid games to get in the habit of slicing every wall once I found there were breakable ones. Guess I got lucky finding the Hive like that. Godhome is...kind of unmissable though if you explore everywhere. That giant chest or whatever it is in the Junk Pit where Godseeker resides sticks out like a sore thumb.

Oh, but I guess you do have to find a breakable wall to get to the Junk Pit don't you? Eh, glad I slash everything! It's definitely rewarding design for those like me. Also naturally stumbled upon The Grimm Troupe switch thing in Howling Cliffs pretty early on. That is all you have to do to start that quest right?

But yeah, I may never beat pantheon 4 in Godhome and get the last two additional endings. Then again...I beat Nightmare King Grimm so anything's possible.

The part where you just hit the on switch? Yeah, just hit it and stay alive! My technique is to usually hit it three times with full bounces - it works out perfectly so the switch gets turned on and the Thwomp gets back into position on the rail where you won't hit it again. Otherwise I'd consistently hit it a second time and screw myself.

And yep, I was tempted to be more evil in the "final boss" section but wasn't! Key here is to use high spin jumps to gain more view of the screen but otherwise stay low. Staying near the middle is also recommended (until you see the coins).

Thwomp Stomp IV: A New Thwomp

I also realized that I actually may like the level more in NSMBU style. Ascending the castle in the vertical sections is just so much more aesthetically pleasing.

So how do you guys feel about the online multiplayer? Somehow I still haven't checked it out but heard it was pretty laggy. Think I'll try it in a few.

This is probably both the easiest and the shortest of the Thwomp Stomp levels funny enough though. And it's certainly neither easy nor short. Will edit this post with the ID in a minute. :D

Course ID: 5F6-T37-1MG

Please play it if you're up for a challenge! Gotta go find some old streamer buddies from Mario Maker 1 to give it a whirl. I learned a lot yesterday going back and playing some of my courses from that game. Like...I'm a lot nicer with power-ups now! Even though the third checkpoint onward I'm mean again. Mulled over changing that for a while and decided not to. Also definitely going to make a course based completely around the last section (the one where the final boss music plays, not the one little screen after) because that is just too fun.

stage is too long

You should play my Mario Maker 1 levels! This is nothing. But yes, one of my biggest complaints with the original is having only 2 checkpoints and nothing has changed there!

E: And yep, I know those lava bubbles don't end up the same since it's dependent on when you activate them, but in my play testing there was nothing that wasn't easily doable. Well, there was, but that's when I decided to make them normal-sized lava bubbles and not mushroom-enhanced ones.

Uhhh, when you first upload a level does it appear instantly in Course World? I fiiinally finished Thwomp Stomp 4 today (mostly did aesthetic touches today but also found some things that needed cheese prevention) and first, it was on the "please wait" screen for like a whole minute. I was getting scared and wasn't looking at the screen when it stopped. Then it finished, with me not seeing what it said, but it had a big checkmark flag by it in Course Maker so I thought it was up. Buuuut it says 0 courses uploaded in Course World :(

Really don't feel like doing a third run through it without the checkpoints to upload. (I did a second one after I found something that can happen in the very very last room and I wanted to reduce chances of death there because that is more of a reward screen after the gauntlet than anything). Hopefully it will appear soon.

The level fucking rocks though.

Pretty sure it's because of the multiplayer. They want to always have the four main characters as Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Toadette. If they had amiibo costumes, how would they make distinctions as to which Ganondorf is which or what have you? I guess they could make alternate costumes for every amiibo, but damn that would be a ton of work.

But yeah, that's easily going to be my most missed feature.
