Nah, Draven ruined it. Link was very clearly getting anti-voted in his matches before Draven. The site was getting tired of Link winning all the time (finally). Now it's been five years since then and Link didn't win CBIX, so we'll see if that mentality still exists, but it's nice that people have finally started to realize that Link is the one who wins all the time, not FFVII. Only took ten years!

Well sure, if you count that, but I'm not convinced Link's antivotes were coming from anyone that used to vote for him the whole way through, so I doubt that would make a difference in the end.

If the match is Link vs. Snake vs. Mario/Samus, then it could've definitely happened, but I still have doubts Zelda fans would've let it happen, if the match was just somewhat close, which it probably still would be.

I really have a hard time seeing Snake having hold up well enough tonot be blown to pieces by Link.

I mean did you not look at the Bonus Poll I posted

he outperformed CLOUD in his last match with Link

or what Snake did to Samus in the finals

I feel pretty good about Snake being #2 (AT LEAST) here actually

That bonus match was Snake's best chance ever to beat Link imo. All the support he had coming into that match from the day before and while it was a good performance, it was always Link's match. I think it's incredible optimistic to think that would be any different today. Even if Snake actually caught some rally, it's insane to not think Zelda fans would counter it. "Blown to pieces" is an exaggeration of course, and I don't get me wrong, I'd love it see it happen, but I absolutely can't see Link being anywhere near close to losing.

LeonhartFour posted...
also people have got to stop this idea of "if you don't have anything new then surely you must be weaker now"

This is a good point for sure, but most evidence we have do point towards this being the general rule however, even if it did take a while for it to happen with Crono, Sephiroth and whoever else. Chrono Trigger is a rare exception, which seems to mostly be it lucking on which userbase is still here tbh.

And I do see Mario and Samus being in a better light in everyones mind now, while I don't think Snake has much reason to be better than back then (already explained why I don't think Smash 5 helps him much), while maybe MSG current situation and MSGV would put him in a slightly less noble spot than he was in back in 2013.

Squall might have been fed to Snake again, but there's a real chance we can finally see the Squall vs. Sonic 1v1.

I have a hard time thinking Knuckles can win that match. Unlike most Final Fantasy games, IX actually seemed to have boosted throughtout the years judging by our last few contests.

Imagine if Isaac gets announced for Smash Ultimate during the contest, that'd remove any doubt there might have been for that match. It's kinda cool he always makes it in either way.

I explain round 2 by saying I picked Ryu to beat Bowser there from the start and it sure as heck wasn't because "Shadow's gonna leech Bowser."

Bowser and Ganondorf got super overrated in SC2K5 by their Villains Contest performances. Neither one has looked that good since then. They had absurd prediction percentages that year, so bracket voting probably helped them out a lot.

I think if Mewtwo really leeched Bowser, then the difference between Bowser and Ryu should've been way bigger, unless Shadow also leeched him, and even so Mewtwo couldn't have held him back by that much (unless you somehow think Toad and Bowser don't overlap a lot).

Whether or not Ryu or Bowser is stronger is different debate.

It's not sudden. He's been good enough to beat him for years.

Only SURPRISE BRAWL ANNOUNCEMENT mid-contest kept Squall from doing it in 2007.

like this Sonic confidence is kind of stunning to me because nobody has ever believed in him until this very poll somehow

I was one of the rare Sonic believers in the early days of the contest, so to see him winning this poll pretty easily to me feels strange.

Yeah alright, but post Brawl, Sonic has reason to have recovered and Squall really doesn't.

have you seen the placement for fire emblem characters

Well, that's because they seperate clones and DLC (in the order it came) before anything, which throws them all over the place. The character selection screen clearly shows they recognize Wario and consider Yoshi a Mario character today.

I can't see what should have suddenly made Squall able to beat Sonic, FFVIII hasn't exactly been given anything lately unlike other PS1 FFs. Sonic>Squall is the only thing here I'd pick with great confidence.

Ended up voting Crono>Sonic, it'd have to mean whatever boosted Chrono Trigger helped Crono too, which I'm not entirely sure about and Mewtwo is tough to predict no matter where the others are.

I honestly don't think 57% on Big Boss in MGS's peak is that bad and I also think the anti-FFVII isn't as bad as back then. FFVII looked good in 2015 before falling victim to rallies like everything else. I think it's crazy to imagine Sephiroth having fallen that drastically.

How is calling a spin-off with huge overlap in characters and worlds an "Entirely seperate game series" perfectable reasonable.

Yeah, they're different genres, but it's the same universe. Saying Waluigi is not a Mario character makes no sense to me.

DDR had long been an established franchise, so Mario Mix is Mario and guest starring in a DDR game.

I think it's super weird to call Mario characters and Mario sports characters different things. Those are all Mario games!

Wario has his own series, yes, but it's incorrect to say he guest stars in something he originated in. The first Wario Land was even called Super Mario Land 3. They're directly connected, you can't level him with Link, Inkling, Isabelle and even Donkey Kong. Smash recognizes it as a spin-off too.

Yoshi is a completely different case though. I think they just wanted to make it appear like the original 8 were from 8 different things. Yoshi still appears in mainline Mario games, which are more common than his own. He's popular enough to have his own games, but so has Luigi and I'm sure no one would say he isn't a Mario character. Even in most Yoshi games, Mario is right there as a crucial part of the plot. And as has been said, Smash itself even put him in the middle of the Mario characters last time.

I have a really hard time seeing Mario losing a close match to Snake, even back when Snake was at his peak.
At least now Mario seems like the obvious winner here. I agree switching Cloud and Snake makes sense.

I really hope we do get this #2-#5 fourpack though, even if means a killer half of the bracket. It's cool how if Link wasn't in the contest, this would be the perfect four to give a quarter each. Seeing Sephiroth against Mario might be nice too, it's not in much doubt, but Sephiroth beat Mario so many times back in the days, it'd just be crazy to see that having switched completely since 2007 when they last faced.

Late to the topic, but it's definitely worth it. Enies Lobby is indeed where everyone agrees the pacing becomes worse, but I think the best solution is to just watch until it bothers you, if that's at that point so be it, but personally, I've watched through it all so far (a little bit behind currently, but I'll catch up) and at no point did it ever really bother me, loved almost every minute.

They used to tie filler things into regular arcs (like Loguetown and Long Ring Long Land) so it can't really be skipped. Regarding actual filler arcs, One Piece manages to have very little of it and they're all very short and not too bad, so I would just watch through it, but you're not missing out either. Except for the G8 filler arc, which I'd recommend not skipping. It's a great miniarc for various reasons and its tied well in between two arcs as well. When I first watched the anime I actually had no idea it was filler I just watched through it, enjoyed it, and was surprised when someone here told me that was filler.
