Eric had the mentally of a 3 years old.
He had escaped from home earlier. His parents had called the police but they said that they didnt had the resources to look for him, so his father was out looking for him.
Eric was running around playing with his toy gun in the night at a place where a known criminal had been seen multiple times, and the police got calls about somebody being seen with a gun.
Eric just wanted to play and didnt realize how serious the situation was.
The police expected an armed criminal and saw an armed person in the dark that didnt responded to their shouts of raising his arms and dropping the weapon.
Eric cant even talk. Most likely he just continued to play and stepped towards the police that responded because they believed that he attacked.
I can see why this happened.
