TLJ at least had a strong thematic sense to it. Letting the past die isnt a theme that the Star Wars fans may have wanted, but at least theres a theme there. I feel like TFA exists just to exist. I don't really like them for a number of reasons. One of the main ones is the complete bastardization of Luke's character. Luke isn't the kind of person to want to kill a kid because he's scared of the Dark Side of the Force. In VI he never gives up on Vader no matter what he did because Luke still sensed Light in him. Yet here's Kylo with some conflicting thoughts on Light and Dark. Kill him I guess because "omg scrd of drksd". It's just lazy writing to give Kylo a reason to turn. It'd have been immensely cooler if Luke had created his new Jedi Academy on Korriban knowingly or unaware of the now-lost Sith academy under the surface and Kylo found some old books down there or some shit and agreed more with Sith world views than Jedi. Then Snoke, sensing this interest in the Dark Side could have corrupted him further for real. It'd also give a neat segway into making a good, canon KotR movie. --- |

There are also a ton of memes that were taken from it which can probably account for some of the rise. I also think that with the state of the Disney Star Wars movies quality, people can make the comparison that the prequel teilogy isnt so bad after all. I still think II is a boring mess though. --- |
