I was ironically reading about this just the other day, based on a completely unrelated discussion about dual citizenship.

At the time my reaction was basically along the lines of, "Hmm, why DO we still do things this way? It seems like there are a lot of better ways to handle citizenship that wouldn't constantly encourage birth tourism."

The interesting part is that most nations in the Americas have policy along these lines, while very few nations in Africa or Eurasia do. Which implies it's probably a mindset strongly influenced by colonialism.

Pretty much what I was going to point out, tbh. We're one of the few nations on the planet that do it and, from a practical standpoint, it's not really a sensible policy. And it's periodically been a trendy thing for the rich to do to give birth on US soil so their child can have dual citizenship even though the kid might not come back to the US until he's an adult. However, at least in those cases the parents were legally in the country whereas other cases you'll have two illegals sneak into the country, have a kid (who becomes by default a citizen), and use that kid as a bargaining chip for their own citizenship -- ie, the citizenship equivalent of squatters rights. All the same, it *is* a tradition...
