the gameplay is really ahead of its time, actually. overworld enemies, a feature games are ridiculed for not having now. one-handed play that was wholly intended.

If the game was not designed to be played with items off, there would not be modes in the game literally added by the devs themselves that do not have items.

i feel you. so, so many people feel qualified to say what is intended design and what isn't while ignoring how the game was actually designed. like their ideas are right, and the actual game isn't. i see this a lot in people who critique writing, too.

Sounds to me that the people that play Smash competitively dont really want to play Smash.

people who refuse to compete are generally pathologically sore losers, in my experience. these are the people who cry 'cheap' or 'broken' any time something doesn't go their way. these are the people who disconnect when things look bad. these are your controller-throwers and tantrum-havers.

they simply cannot accept that there are better players than them, and when that fact hits them in the face, out comes derision, usually in the form of calling someone a tryhard - which is practically the same as saying 'well you're not really having fun'.

competitive players want to have matches decided by player skill only, to the best of the limitations of the game. there's nothing wrong with that.

smash is designed to be played either way.

it's like a poor guitarist arguing that they're 'more expressive' or 'more soulful' because they never learned how to play fast. or just can't. playing with items on is equivalent to bending notes and making faces.
