I mean, I just don't understand why you would respond at all if you were just in the dark and guessing?

For science PhD programs in the US, the first few years vary a lot depending on a few factors.

The major factor is whether or not the program has rotations, where you rotate into working in different labs temporarily for the first year, before settling into a position that works both best for you and the corresponding PI (principal investigator). If it doesn't have rotations, you start off working in your lab, and typically you have interviewed specifically for that lab rather than the program.

The second factor is course load, which differs depending on the program and university. On average, there's 1-2 years of courses that are required. These classes are usually taught A-B-Fail, and usually the advice given to you is to do the least amount of work possible for them. Your focus should always be on the research. Classwork is secondary.

After that, the experience is usually very similar across programs, as similar as research is across different disciplines. At the end of your programs courseload, you typically have some sort of comprehensive exam that allows you to advance from a PhD student to a PhD candidate, which essentially means you can start working towards your dissertation work. This means preparing a dissertation proposal which you present to a committee and they either approve or request modifications for. Then you do your dissertation research, which is usually a series of experiments meant to get at some central question, though this has evolved to be more practical in a lot of departments, and they accept less cohesive work, essentially allowing students to package together their publications with maybe an experiment or two extra to tie them together.

Then you write your dissertation, and send it to your committee, who then agrees to meet, when you defend and they decide a pass/fail. Typically, failing is very unusual because there are many gates prior to the defense that prevent you from going forward unless you are going to pass.

That'd doesn't directly contradict what I said. You just added more detail.

You need a PhD for certain things in the world of academia. Your research will carry much more weight if you have one too.

A Sillicon Valley firm may not care that much that you have a computer science PhD if someone else has a master's and a kick ass portfolio and several years of industry experience and employer recommendations....

But it largely depends on the field too

Calm down Coastal, I was just saying. I thought perhaps you had taken a long, hard, annoying PhD, and the unpleasantness of it had gotten to you. I appreciate the information you have given me.

Do you go to classes every day, or is it less? Is your PhD advisor a professor, or just another person who has already gained their PhD in the same subject? I assume you were joking about the lack of career prospects for PhD holders. I mean...those people must have a lot of options (read: ways to make money) ahead of them.

You also didn't answer my other questions I asked later. That made me feel sad. ;_;

Ok, here goes:

1) It depends a lot on the PhD.

A STEM PhD might be lucrative. I believe Darkman is a STEM PhD, for example, and he's a rocket scientist or something cool like that. A humanities PhD? Those are the ones who have bad job prospects, and many do end being teaching assistants.

PhD's are considered more for academic purposes, generally, but a PhD in the "right" discipline can indeed help your career. This is a very case-by-case basis.

2) Duration, I guess it also depends on the PhD, I am not too sure. It takes considerably longer than a Master's, generally speaking. You need a Master's before you can take the PhD in many cases.

3) How does it work: You do have to have a set program, but it's much more flexible than in a bachelor's or master's. Nobody will force you to take "philosophical thinking" or "American History" if you're doing a neuroscience PhD, while that may happen if it's a bachelor's. You get to choose your subjects and workload, but it has to be relevant and reasonable.

4) As far as I know the adviser is a professor.

I should've also asked, how does the dissertation work?

-They present you a series of topics you could do your dissertation on and you choose one.

-You research the fuck out of it and write your dissertation.

-You meet up with your academic adviser periodically so he can tell you that your dissertation is shit and you need to change everything because he is having a power trip and this is the one bright spot of his miserable existence.

-You finish your dissertation years later and now you have to "defend it" in person in front of a bunch of angry academics trying to poke holes in it in front of everyone.

- Your dissertation is archived and nobody will read it. You're now a PhD, which means you get to call yourself doctor and you have a lot of debt. Congrats! You can now be a teaching assistant.

@Coastal_elite

Sarcasm and extreme bitterness aside, is that basically it?

So, is there no going to class at all? You basically spend several years engaged in heavy research, and then you sit down for however long, and write the thing? At the end, do you get a grade, or is it just binary - pass / fail? Also, can you explain about this defending it thing?

Dude, I was trying to be humorous. Nobody was giving you the time of the day and I decided to respond in an accurate, albeit humorous way. And this is how you come back to me? Dang. No wonder nobody else bothered.

And yes, you still have to go to class, Mr. Congeniality. The dissertation is just part of the package, but you still have to study the PhD course.

None of the controller stuff makes them sound bad, tbh. It just sounds like they looked at what was working and tried to emulate it. Besides, that Saturn controller was hot garbage, and I can't honestly say I ever liked the N64 controller.

Then you also had to do the programming and such for it.

It started the DIY electronics craze today.

Protestant: mostly to exclude Irish immigrants.

It came to be because it was meant to exclude other white immigrants, especially Irish and Italian (Catholic).

"guys! "blood and soil" is fine! Plants grow in soil and we all have blood in our bodies!"
"guys! the phrase "final solution" is not offensive! It simply talks about solutions that are final!"

No, nobody has a problem with land, with solutions, with final things or with having blood. But the phrase above are still offensive because of their meaning and hisorical context. But YOU KNOW THIS, you're just playing dumb.

About this shokan person, I remember an exchange he had with someone (don't remember who) a couple of weeks ago.

Shokan: I'm a Nazi.
Other person: Okay Nazi.
Mod: I'm modding you for calling him a Nazi.

I trimmed it down, but that's the gist of it.

Yeah, the dude literally outright admits to agreeing with Nazi ideology but somehow he literally never gets modded for this shit ever

even worse, YOU get modded if you confront him about it.

Wow.

He literally uses the death of 41 to promote his racial anxiety bullshit. And then he whines about how "WASP rule is over" when the presidential cabinet and intern and aide pool are the WASPiest they have been in decades.

He also says meritocracy is bad and that SAT scores shouldn't be used in lieu of recommedations from powerful friends.

This guy is an idiot and a racist, and the fact that the NY times publishes this bullshit says a lot about them
